Dark/Dark is VERY fun. It has a lot of scary powers and self +end and self +heal. However you do have to watch your endurance. Also Shadow Maul is my favourite Melee attack EVER.
Firey Melee is a great Primary for tankers, but I think they moved it around for Brutes so it isn't the same.

Powersets are not a major issue. What you really need to do is remap Tab to target nearest, and then learn the zen art of Tab, F, mash attack buttons until target dies, Tab, F, Mash attack buttons etc. etc.

Super Strength or energy melee look about the strongest.

I'd probably say EN/DA will be a nice combination. In general /da brutes will be strong. En and SS both have good attacks for building up fury quickly, which is another key thing IMHO.
Of course I am ignoring this advice completely, but I dont really set out to play the "best" combination.

I have a rather horrible mental picture of a hairy Brute wearing a cheerleader outfit. Think Bluto from Popeye.

I'm thinking Dark Melee/Invuln. Primarily because Dark Armour makes such an annoying noise, and I like the tanking big mobs opportunities that Invuln opens up. Had a lvl 14 DM/Inv on Beta, and he was GREAT fun to play...
I think a em/fire brute would be a nice pvp combo, em deals massive damage and with fury+build up+fiery embrace it will 2 hitt kill anything

Ooooohhh hmmm my fav SS/INV gotta be the best great resistance and deffence you can bearly harm them if they slotted right and SS deals tons of damage out and great for
hero sweeping in sirens 
I can vouch for EM/DA. Stupidly powerfull. I played DM/Fire before and I wouldnt go back to it ever. DM isn't too damaging IMO.
Energy Melee has so much damage it's scary, and Dark Armor has resistance to just about everything but slows. (psychic resistance, end drain resistance, you name it!)
Make sure to pick up acrobatics tho

It kinde depends on your play style. If you're going to team in big teams make sure U have a decent S/L resistance. When you play allot solo or in small teams, it's ain't that big deal and all sets will do just fine.
However I second the thought bout the DM/FA (deleted a lvl43 myself, after having seen the magic of a SS/INV brute). DM might be a fun powerset to play, but it's just not performing like SS or EM. Mebbe I'm not worthy for DM (or vice-versa) lol
Like I said it's all bout your style and preference :-)
At the moment my favorite brute is the SS/elec, mega damage and nice res to just bout everything (even psi comes with elec). The only downside is no self heal, but this can be added with the pool powerset. But on the plus, it's got a great endurance drain, so no more end problems for ya (just make sure to bring along a cor, but this applies to all brute sets).
