Cedega or Wine for Ubuntu?

I'm new to this whole Linux thing, and am trying to decide if it's worth paying the extra money to play COx on Cedega, or to go with Wine. As COx and Oblivion are the only 2 games I play with any frequency, I would hate to have to pay for something that I don't need to.

If anybody can give me some advice, I would appreciate it.

Go with Wine. It's 100% free, it should be dead easy to install ('sudo apt-get install wine' should get it installed, Synaptic and other GUI package managers should make it easy as well), and from what I've heard, it works very well with CoH.

And, if for some reason it DOESN'T work, you can still try Cedega later without being out any money from trying Wine. Definitely a win-win situation

Wine. Honestly Cedega is a joke. Their support is slower then WINE's, and you _pay_ for Cedega.

Yes, I realize in both cases you're mostly doing your own support anyway, but when you REALLY need assistance... Cedega is sssllloooow to offer suggestions. WINE's community seems to.. what's the word I'm looking for... care?

Wine. Back in the day Cedega was worth it, but Wine has caught up with Cedega. Always thought it was funny that Wine and Cedega are basically the same company. Cedega has a prettier interface and offers support.

HAven't used either in awhile, hope they fixed the Costume Change error.

Thank you both.
I've been playing around with wine, off and on.
Unfortunately, since I'm completly new to linux, it takes me about 6x longer to get anything done in it. And I did not really want to spend my weekly allotment of play time to get Wine to work, to only find out that Cedega would have been better.

I didn't have a very good experience using CoX in WINE. Oh sure, it worked, but the graphics quality was awful, and even worse I wasn't able to tweak most of the advanced graphics settings. That may just be my video card though...

i currently run CoX in Windows XP Home and it's the only program that really requires Windows. i have been considering reinstalling Windows with all the latest drivers, but if switching to Ubuntu will give equal or greater performance than my current system i will drop Windows entirely.

My current system specs are:
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.9424 (English)
Monitor: SyncMaster 226BW
Description: SoundMAX HD Audio O
Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_1986&SUBSYS_1043818F& REV_1005
Manufacturer ID: 65535
Product ID: 65535

i haven't upgraded the video drivers in about a year since the last i had the game performance had decreased significantly and i reverted to the old drivers.
What sort of performance would i get using Ubuntu and Wine compared to XP Home?

I tried running in Ubuntu on a 7600 and it runs, but graphics quality is absolutely awful. Many advanced graphical features are outright disabled.

You can try it, but I wouldn't bother.

Ah, the 7900 is a bit better than the 7600, but i'm thinking of building a new system soon, so i may wait a bit longer.
Or i can just go reinstall Windows with the latest drivers and try it both ways for myself..

I think your graphics card has a lot to do with how well it works. Support for drivers is focused on the newer cards.

I run CoH on a junky laptop with Intel graphics. With the settings on the low end it works fine in Windows.

I tried it with WINE and Cedega and neither offered support for Intel drivers. I did get it to work briefly, but it was miserable. Had to switch back to Windows because CoH is the only game I care about.

Wish I had the cash to ditch the laptop and get a new desktop. Unemployment FTL.

I've been playing CoX under wine, it works pretty okay. You will not get the same performance under wine as windows.

If you can, install the restricted drivers for your gfx-card, howto here.

Also, look at wines appdb for any extra settings to get CoX up and running.

They're not "the same company" and they never were. Even basically.

WINE wasn't originally released under the LGPL, making the whoopsie of using the X11 license, which allowed someone (Transgaming) to take the code and apply it to their own proprietary project with the intention of making a profit from it without contributing anything back to the Wine project in return. Which resulted in WineX, and upset the Wine project something awful.

The Wine project adopted the LGPL in reaction, which had put paid to Transgaming's use of WINE code in Cedega. For several years.

If it's the crashing when you bring up the costume window or visit a tailor, it's NVIDIA's drivers you have to thank for that, not WINE.

There is a workaround, though, but it requires tweaking a single line in the source code and recompiling. *facepalm*

I play COH on Ubuntu as well and use wine. Yes, the costume bug is still there, but only for Nvidia graphic cards. There's a way to fix the problem by adding an option in your launcher path (see wine website for details)

For performances, it's even better on linux than on windows since it's an old computer.

I's say that wine is doing the job well. No need for Cedega
