Reward Merits for Mayhem/Safeguard side missions

Right now there's no real reason to do most of the side missions in Mayhem or Safeguard missions. The only ones worth doing are the weapons deal ones for temp powers. What if there was a Merit reward for doing these side missions? If there was a 50% chance for a single merit to drop for the mission owner when completing a side mission, that would work out to 2 or 3 merits per 5 newspaper+mayhem/police band+safeguard missions at high levels, assuming you do all the side missions. That would be roughly the same as the average Merit rewards for a story arc of that length, and it would give incentive to do those side missions aside from the badges.


Issue 16 made me feel like this.

I do the mayhem side missions for the badges which lead to an accolade. That's a pretty big "real reason" to do the side missions.

All your idea would do is entice players to run more and more radio/paper missions and possibly ignore story arcs.

It's a nice idea but I would not support enticing players even more away from the lore/content of the game.

Your numbers probably need adjustment (they sound a bit low for the time involved in getting a Mayhem/Safeguard), but in general this seems like a pretty solid idea.

That's not an inherently bad thing. Radio missions are just as legitimate a levelling path as AE and "regular" missions. Putting them on par with these other paths will require revising their rewards as well as the general quality of the missions. The OP's idea is a pretty decent stab at the former, and the latter is outside its scope.

That's only villainside. What do heroes have to motivate them? There should definitely be a reward associated with those heroic acts.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Except the Hero Safeguard Accolades don't have a power bonus, so except for badge hunting purposes they're insignificant.

At the current time.

If the devs wanted they could alter the accolades so they give some sort of bonus. Maybe a permanent "temp" power unique to each badge.

Also, there is one side mission that gives a temp power too for both safeguard and mayhem missions. I believe it's the one where are trying to break up a weapons deal or something.

That's why I thought of a permanent temp power. It doesn't have to be powerful, just put them on the same scale as the Origin temp powers.

That sounds nice but Some new accolades would need to be added to Villains for Parity. It wouldn't feel right if Villains couldn't get the same bonus power however weak it may be.

Agreed. Any changes to accolades should be universal and not limited to one faction.

The main reason the blueside accolade doesn't have a power is for parity.

I would think that the chance for a Prototype Element or an Access Bypass (the latter often worth a hefty sum) is a good reason to do the Vault Break In/Smash and Grab side mission.

I do all the side missions in Safeguards. However, once I get the badge for Jail Break, Arson, and Bombing, I stop doing those. Weapons Raid, I will continue doing until I have the badge, and all the temp powers, except Claymore, which is 30 minutes real time (or if I need to renew a temp power).

For Mayhems, I am the same on the Weapons Raid (no badge for that, but there are still the temps). I also do the arsons until I have Firebug, and of course, Smash and Grab. Kidnapping though, I only bother with if I think I may need the extra time (no badge), and jail break I don't do (waste of time and no badge).
