Energy Aura.. Why does it suck?

Just one more comment here:

A lot of recent posts claim that in the late game, with IOs, EA can be plenty strong. That's almost an obvious conclusion.

It is, however, of limited value when performing set balance comparisons. For that, the current datamining principle for set balance will focus generally on actual builds throughout the levels. This will almost necessarily favor builds with limited or no IO enhancement, at least through the lion's share of the game. This is not where EA shines.

In fact, one of the biggest concerns I'd have with the somewhat pervasive idea of changing out CP for an enhanced power is that it comes late.

I am maybe 55% done with a comprehensive ??/EA Guide, which details every primary possible, broken down into 10 level gaps for each said primary.

At no point are IO's (cept for some generic ones) involved.

Just trying to get my FM/EA finished. I don't play with anyone I know (in fact, I developed a 3rd account just for this!), as to avoid "we know your playstyle" arguments.

I avoid data-mining... my guide will be based on sheer visible performance.

I won't say it's really strong. I think EA will be better than resistance sets like electrical armor and fire armor. I'm not sure EA can be better than other sets with defense. I would say EA with IO is reasonably tough.

I thought that people try to avoid including IO in set balance because there is no unique way to do slotting, builds can vary from multi-billions all the way down to a couple millions. The balance can be tipped towards one way or the other by slotting differently. Do people avoid discussing IO because of how datamining is done?

I think that EA doesn't really shine without IO. Do other power sets shine without IO?

It's been stated that the developers don't take IOs into account for power set balance. I don't necessarily believe that, but it's out there.

That being the case, a lot of the number crunchers tend to view balance around SOs.

And then toss that information out the window and compare purpled to the hilt builds.

How do you all think EA woudl do as a Scrapper set? After reading some of these posts, it sounds like it might be a better fit. I'm actually hoping it does proliferate over, because thematically, it works for Tech-based and military stealth type heroes. The defense numbers don't look too bad, and Energy Cloak and Energy Drain sound like they could be really fun on a Scrap.

I don't see it being any different on a scrapper. Except for being even more squishy due to the lower base HP. Flipside to that is that scrappers don't need fury. They can fall back any time they want without loss of damage output.

I've often called EA the set that lets a brute act like a stalker. I think that would hold true for a scrapper as well.

Should it be ported over? Hell yea. Would I give it another chance as a scrapper? Maybe. I do love the way it looks and sounds.

There's less psi blueside, that alone might make it a better set for a scrapper.

That and the ongoing CP question...

Scrappers have access to Parry/Divine Avalanche; that will be an advantage.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, somewhat, however Parry/Divine is positional defense and not elemental defense. In otherwords, they will not stack with EA's defenses as they would with SR's. They'll still be helpful, sure, but they won't stack.

parry/Da is melee/lethal defense.

No love versus smashing, but there is a lot of lethal out there, including a lot of ranged lethal.

Yes, BS and Kat can deflect bullets.

There is alot of lethal out there, so yes, it will help with that. I forgot that it did defend against lethal, just not smashing. Still backasswards if you ask me lol. You'd "think" it'd defend against "smashing" attacks moreso than "lethal" in the sense that smashing represents hammers, fists, kicks, pipes, etc whereas lethal adds to the mix...bullets...lol, odd, but there are alot things that simply do not make sense in this game...so oh well...

While this may be true, you're trying to tell me that you can deflect an object that is traveling faster than the speed of sound, generates enough kinetic energy to break bones deep within your body even if it does not pierce flesh, can knock you clean off your feet, and is only the size of a dime.......but you can't parry to save your life against someone wielding a slow...and heavy...sludge hammer?!? How the hell does that make sense?

It doesn't. And that is my point.

It's fine that the dev's included "lethal" defense to parry/divine as it does make sense in the "comic-booky" themes, however, for all good sense, they should have added "smashing" as well.

My only beef with typed defense is that even after going through the trouble of capping all the damage types and having to spend so much on your toon, you are left with holes in your def. Psi is very expensive def wise to cap and causes a lot of sacrifices in your build and you still have that un defendable toxic damage.

I just cant bare having a toon with such glaring holes in def even after spending hundreds of millions of inf on them. Maybe I just suck at typed defense builds.

It seems like there are many defense types. But smashing and lethal are linked, so as fire with cold, and energy with negative energy. Therefore, soft-capping these 6 defense types should be no more troublesome than soft-capping melee, ranged and aoe.

I agree that the psi and toxic holes are kinda unfair, although the holes are probably thematic to the power set (toxic is probably designed to be a general weakness to all players). To be honest, I don't really understand why psionic attacks are pink and something you can dodge with super reflex. Maybe, all psionic and toxic attacks shouldn't have a positional attribute (don't get angry, it probably won't happen).

It would be clearer if we can take a look at the design notes of the power. Recently, things are "standardized" such that melee are linked with both smashing and lethal. Maybe parry can use such treatment as well.

I'm not saying capping typed def is hard, it is pretty easy with the abundant IOs and new changes to type/positional def bonuses. I was specifically pointing out that it is a relatively expensive process that still leaves your toon with glaring vulnerabilities while the same process on positional defense leaves no such hole. =)

Agree with your points, I was just thinking that the stealth factor would work a lot better (and is more fitting thematically) for Scraps than Brutes.
