Both, depending on the mood I'm in. When I play a Hero, my "main/signature" character is a L50 MA/Regen Scrapper. When I play a Villain, my "main/signature" character is a L50 SS/WP Brute.
And my namesake cahracter is a L25 BS/WP Scrapper...

I'm an altaholic, but I suppose I'd consider Mouse Police on Virtue as my main. Scrapper hero, then. ^_^

My signature character has somehow fractured into several signature characters, but they're all heroes.
I'm a hero. My namesake character isn't my signature character, but they're both heroes. Namesake is Johnstone, a Stone/SS Tanker. And then my signature character is Annon, a BS/WP Scrapper. And neither of them have ever been drawn... And oddly, Annon has technically been my signature character ever since he was created for a DnD campaign that I ran, but I didn't make him on my home server until two and a half years after I started playing CoH.
Of course, like others, I have tons of alts too; so I don't know if there actually is one character that I'm most recognized on. Heh, don't know if I even have any characters that others do recognize as I'm not exactly talkative or popular.

...But seriously? I am, well, John, me, the name, character, would technically be the first character I made many moons ago although I realistically don't consider him that. John would be a notwolverineClaws/Regen Scrapper. Although I consider my "Main" to be a Fire/FF/Fire Troller, John stays as who I am.

My main/signature character, Masked Shrike, is a hero. Honestly, I have very few villains and none that I actually play. Just not my cup of tea.

I don't really have a main, as in 'my favourite toon.' I have a main badge villain and hero. I have toons I focus greatly on for a period of time, then take a break to focus on another. I have Syrus B., a Fire/TA controller I made to be part of the Envisionaries, who is based on the avatar I used on my website in the past. (And thus became my forum/user id everywhere I went.)
I don't have a particular toon I consider my signature. One that I identify with, etc. I just have a whole slew of high powered alts. But I do prefer to play villains.

My main character Demon Flare was created back in 2005 before CoV came out. I really wanted to make a villain so i made him all evil looking and build him as a fire/axe tanker. Later on after the release of CoV i reworked his story (yet to actually write it) to make him a ex-villain...BUT when Rogue comes out his butt is makin a b-line back to the rogue isles!
Both. My forum namesake is a Hero but my main villain has the same name as my global. Not to mention my global is an online persona I've used for years.

Stygian Blade is a vigilante i guess you'd say. More heroic sure, but never afraid to get down and dirty. Kat/DA Scrapper btw.
