So anyways I have played with my setting a while and never got it to work well so I going in the next month buy a new Graphics Card. What would people Recommend. I am looking for a NVIDIA so I can get away from the ATI problems I am having. The only games I am really going to run on it are this one and Batman Arkham Asylum. I run Xp, have 3 GB of Ram on a single core 3.2 GHz Celron

Depending on your budget, those are both solid picks considering you arent shooting for the starts for performance. You can always go higher, but given the age of the machine and CPU, too much more and youll be getting throttled by the CPU bandwidth vs the GPU bandwidth.

Considering that you want to run Arkham Asylum, the first choice between those links is probably not going to cut it unless you like to play slideshows. I'm gonna suggest to you the same thing my dad did to me when my last video card died. If you can afford it go with something that you won't have to worry about having to replace it in 6 months. The 9800 linked above should do nicely.

If you're running a Celeron, you might have another problem there.

By the way who's requirements are those?

Those are the min specs for the Arkham Asylem. granted the spec sheet really says a single core 3Ghz, Celerons perform well under thier full up conterparts. I usually lop about 20% off the clock of a Celeron to get its "real" performance level.

yeah i'd agree 9800GT, one of my rigs here has the 8800GT and that barely pulls off heroes with max details, FSAA and AA at x2 .

You're doing it all wrong then.
I can dual box 2 wide screens (1600x1050 and 1600x1024) at 200% detail 4xFSAA 16xAFjust fine (frame rate between 20-30 even on Hami raids) with my 8800GT.
Single running Its 40-60 fps solid at 200% detail.

If you are railing single box with an 8800, you need a better processor or more RAM.

Price wise there doesn't seem to be a big difference so why not get the one with more memory?

So My question at least for Heroes Can I go max settings with a 9800?

am running AMD dual core 3Ghz on 4Gb ram. I'd love to know what else I can do.

its mostly perfect. Villain side gives me grief at those settings though.

I would guess that the game will play reasonably well at max settings with such a setup. Again, your problem at that point will be your CPU, not your graphics card. The 9800GT definitely has the horsepower for max settings, though.

The 9800 GT is just the 8800 GT renamed. Same with the 8800 GTS 512MB (not the other versions, though) and the 9800 GTX, although the 9800 has higher clock speeds in this instance.

I would actually go with the GTS 250, as it has slightly lower power consumption, slightly better performance, and costs a little bit less than the 9800 GTX.

Check your Task Manager while playing and make sure the game is using both CPU's. If it appears to only be using one, edit your CoH shortcut* and add -renderthread 1 to it. Also, check out jg001's NVIDIA Settings and Recommendations.

* If it does not work with the CoH Updater, make a new shortcut with "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh -renderthread 1 as the Target (if you installed CoH elsewhere, point it there instead of Program Files), and "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes" as the Start In location.

I thought the -renderthread 1 was by default now. if not i'll add it. MY frame rate in coh is fine but stutters badly (as far as im concerned, i am very picky when it comes to pc performance) in CoV. I'll ad that to my various shortcuts and see if it makes a difference.

ok renderthread 1 in the shortcut. Framerate still hopping between 16-30 FPS mind you, this is while superleaping, in villains, details at maximum and FSAA and AA set to x2 . In heroes its basically smooth the entire time.

8800GT (some super clocked special edition)
3Ghz amd dual core
4Gb ram.

I think its just my wanting perfection. I'd say thats about right for the 8800 as my wifes 8600 doesn't perform as well.

been a great card though
but to the OP, definetly go the 250 if you can. that is a good little card!!

I run CoX at max settings with a 8800GT and the frame rate is excellent. So the 9800 should be just fine. However, I wonder if your Celeron processor will not be the choke point (limiting factor)? CoX is CPU intensive.

If I were buying a new video card today, I would go for nVidia's 200 series... the GTX 275 is a good buy these days. However, I would not move to that if I was running a single core processor such as your Celeron.

I was thinking of geting a Video Card Locally As I hate having to deal with mail returns. So I saw this card locally

9400

can this work with my needs?

Now they didn't have this one in the web site but this is other option.

GTS 250 1GB PCIe 2.0

Of the two? I'd take the GTS 250 any day over the 9400 any day.

Just remember not to install the 186.xx driver if you are running Vista or Windows7. Stick with the 185.xx driver instead.

Not sure what you are asking, but I "think" I can guesstimate it.

The GTS 250 has two DVI-I ports on it. There IS a DVI to VGA adapter included with the card. This allows the video card to be used with monitors that don't have the DVI ports, including the paperweight series of CRT monitors.

As for the 9400, I can's get the link to work. It takes me to a Staples site for Canada and wants me to enter a Postal Code to get "an accurate list of available items and inventory in your area."

Okay, half the memory.

Looks like it does include a VGA connector on the card, and after looking at it on the BFG site I see that it also includes a low profile adapter, which would make it attractive to anyone running a computer with a slim case.

The only real con I see on the 250 GTS you linked is that it takes up two slots and the 9400 takes up one slot.

Well, one additional possible problem is that it requires a 450W PSU where the 9400 only requires 350W. Although, several major manufacturers computers have been known to ship with smaller PSU's than this. Even fairly recently.

Since I haven't seen any mention of what size PSU you have, it's pure conjecture on my part as to whether or not your PSU is beefy enough for either of these.

That is good to know, my power supply is 350 W so I guess I have to go with the 9400, so Tech Gurus will this be enough to run my monator at full power for COX? I know people said the 0800 could do it but will the 9400 do it?
