Psi Assault: Awesome or Notsome?
My fire/psi permadom still farms and clears a mish set for 8 solo. The shockwave nerf slowed me down a lil bit but it's still the best farming build for villains.
The dev's make me laugh... really. They are totally breaking this game.

I'm going to guess the Hurricane nerf. Back when base PvP was still seriously considered, Castle was worried about people getting pinned into corners with repel effects like Hurricane. So.. he decreased the tick rate from one every.. .25 seconds I believe? To once per second... something like that. Anyway, critters stopped being repelled by Hurricane properly. Killed my Storm/Elec too.

'Recently', stormies were made that their pets don't inherit their recharge. Therefore, lightning storm, for example, went from multiplying the effects of hasten to merely benefiting from it by recharging faster.

LS nerf. Both my stormies were extreme recharge builds that leverage the heck out of Lightning storm. I was called an exploiter by the devs . I feel like a weather man while playing them now rather than Freyr - the Norse god of weather.
It literally took the wind out of my sails and put them into retirement.
I've spent so much time and money IO'ing my fire/storm and my storm/sonic that I won't delete them. I have hopes that one day LS is buffed after a couple years of data mining.

As for blasters, I was one of those people that actually liked living on the edge of my seat and risking death at every turn.
I'm well aware they are stronger because they can now plow through things with brute force and require far less tactics. That change also killed the pulse of the AT for me. 2 lvl 40+ blasters deleted.
Stalkers
I didn't mention the stalker buffs as the AT has never really interested me and the changes that make them essentially into a red side scrapper failed to elicit any further desire from me. I did have a low 40 em/regen for pvp, but I deleted it when ET was gutted and the fast flow of the set was changed to be a lumbering snooze-fest.
Doms
Now that I've been playing around more on my perma earth/fire I'm actually thinking about retiring it as well , but I'm not really blaming Castle for this change.
I just really hate flares and it is now the most spammed attack for the set.
I hate that they just borrowed an energy attack animation and recoloured it for flares and called it "new". It makes no sense in the set. EVERY fire attack throws fire or uses a conjured firesword. Except flares (and cremate, which I also dislike being recycled as a "new" attack). Flares doesn't fit with fire attacks and it is now my most used attack. It aggravates me.

It sure isn't for pvp anymore , which used to be about 70-80% of my playtime. thx Castle and crew heh.
I'm currently leveling up a fire/traps corr. I think it will be astoundingly good for what I want it to do. And it is pretty fun so far.
Basically I play for corruptors now and I figure traps has already been nerfed into the ground so it should be safe (crosses fingers). I still really like doms, but none of the possible combos are very appealing to me at the moment. I'd roll an illusion dom tomorrow if I could. I'm also patiently waiting for /cold to get ported to trollers so I can play an ill/cold, or a fire/cold. I'm worried that proliferation has been canceled indefinitely though.
I realize that my "why" is a pretty thin strand to be hanging by. If I upgrade my comp at the end of summer I expect the stand to break.
edit: great link. Sometimes I think that too. If you really want to get me started I'm not all that fond of AE (though I use it) and since they killed street sweeping way back in the day I feel the living game world (however limited it was) died.
but like I said, the strand I hang from is pretty thin.

Yes, for the most part AE has been a flop to me because I think AE farming is boring as all get out and that's the only thing anyone wants to do anymore.
.... But! I found myself on a awesome team just last night. We took on a couple of REALLY hard AE arcs and triumphed.... I mean seriously... there were dom's Electric Assault/Invulnerable bosses with unstoppable in there. It was that crazy. Man oh man was it fun.

Wait, what? Dominators don't get Fire Sword, and they don't get Cremate. In fact, Cremate was created for Brutes to replace Combustion, presumably because two PBAoEs was felt to be too powerful to a primary damage dealer. And Doms do get Combustion, not Fire Sword Circle.
I don't even use Flares. I checked out the animation change, and it looks to me like the ranged part of the attack is the same, even if the casting animation is different. I never put it back into regular use, though, and I still haven't even though it's "better" now. I don't need the DPS, and I certainly don't need the End cost.
(Also, Flares is bugged, see the other thread. I'm probably not even going to use Flares even if it gets fixed, though. I use it for building Domination, and really, that's it)

I understand why combustion was likely pulled, that has absolutely nothing to do with why cremate has a crappy animation though. Nothing.
It was a holistic statement about all fire "attacks". There are more fire based powers in the game that found in fire assault. They all fit into a similar design, which cremate and flares fail at. I play more than just a /fire dom. I have several fire corrs, a fire scrap, a //fire troller, a //pyre tank and several fire control based toons.
All fire attacks use an animation that throws fire (ie char, fireblast, incinerate, bonefire, even firebreath) or they use a conjured sword (ie firesword, FSC, GFS).
There are TWO fire "attacks" in the game that don't and both of them are recent additions and were just borrowed (yay for shortcuts) from other sets. Flares and cremate.
Cremate is a haymaker with firefists. So you are actually physically hitting someone with your body (the only fire attack that does that). It should actually be all smash damage with fire dot, rather than 70% fire damage
Flares is a recolored powerbolt, you stick both fists out and fire just pew pews out, but there is no actual throwing motion.
I guess people are ok with that. I've always tolerated it because cremate is nowhere near my most used attack on my fire/sr and because I could skip flares on blasters/corrs and quickly eliminate it from my /fire dom. Now it is my most used attack on my /fire dom

My /fire doms aren't mind or grav so working flares out of the attack chain is pretty much not going to happen. I'm happy for those that can though.

All melee attacks do partial Smashing or Lethal damage, plus the damage type of the set, if that differs. Dark Melee attacks are only partially Dark damage, Ice Melee attacks are only partially cold Damage, Energy Melee attacks are only partially Energy damage. Fire is the exception, with melee attacks that do almost exclusively fire damage.
Even at that, though, Fire Sword is partially Lethal damage. So it's really only Incinerate that is unique as a melee attack that does purely Fire damage. Combustion could be considered an exception as well, but Dark has some AoEs that do only Dark damage, and Fire Sword Circle is partially Lethal, so it seems to be dependent on whether the "attack" physically hits the target, or just emits an effect that hits.
I don't suppose you have a problem with Shadow Maul or Total Focus making physical contact with the foe, so I'm guessing that with Incinerate it is a conceptual thing, a sort of "Burning Hands" cast at point blank range. I must admit, I like it for that reason too. But I'm not going to put down Cremate over it.
As for Flares, there may not be any throwing involved, but that was never the case, the original animation had the character standing with his hands over his head. And are you sure it's a "recolored Power Bolt" and not flames? Granted, I haven't fired it all that often, but it sure looks like flames to me.

In a game of concepts it is entirely a conceptual thing. I'd likely be upset if I pulled out an assault rifle and they called it mind probe
Cremate and flares are no different, they don't fit with the way fire works game wide. People just tolerate crap though, even I admitted I do as well.
As for TF and Shadow Maul, I have no issue with sets full of hand to hand contact making further contact.

It's powerbolt's animation, with fire graphics. You get them both at lvl 1 go see for yourself. Unless you are suggesting that powers like: air sup, haymaker, bonesmasher, cremate, seismic smash, havoc punch, etc, actually use a different animation.
They are the exact same, just with set specific effects added. Same as flares and pb. Wait for power colorization and set them to the same color they will be virtually identical at the point of origin.
If laziness was the goal I'd have used the char, or ring of fire animation, at least they make sense for fire attacks. Char in particular would work very well for a "flare" like power.
New flares is an aberration from other ranged fire attacks and for the most part is due entirely to unwillingness to do actual work. Unless the goal is to make everything virtually the same...but that is a worse path to go down than lack of motivation.

Nope. And in fact Energy Transfer's animation is Bitter Ice Blast's animation now. A ranged animation being used for a melee attack.
The graphic I'm pretty sure is a fire, though. It has flames. And it sets the target on fire. And there are just so many animations that are reused in this game, just with different graphics and particle effects. Maybe in the future, after they've finished making the graphics color tintable, they'll let us change the animations. Although they'll have to link it to cast time somehow, so you don't end up trading a short animation for a long one.
This is really very, very minor. You don't like the fact that they changed the animation time from 3.3 seconds to 1 second? Fine, but most people think the benefit in usefulness outweights whatever it looks like. That battle was lost ages ago, and really, even the devs don't like to fight it.

I LIKE that is is faster, I HATE the current fast animation they chose to use. It DOESN'T fit with FIRE.
Imagine if you pulled out an assault rifle to do mind probe, would you like that, or would it piss you off? That is how new flares is for me.
Don't even get me started on color customization when every attack animation is recycled ad nauseum already.

You're right, the only thing that was changed is that flares used to be removed from my tray and now it is my most used attack. As a result I'm late to the party. It's like the old NBC commercials during rerun season: "if you haven't seen it, it's new to you"
You answered to OP's specific question in the first post and since then this thread has been off topic from the 4th post.
Here, on topic:
Psi assault is full of medium damage attacks that are strapped to moderate cast speeds. As a result it is on the low end of single target performance and would have been in the middle for aoe performance.
To ensure it is near the top for aoe, PSW was bumped up to 16 targets.
Psi does very mediocre at best while solo'ing and still does very well when in teams. It is still the best aoe team set because both aoe attacks are upfront damage, so while /fire can produce more aoe combustion is "teh suck" dealing dot damage over 7 seconds---after a 3 second cast time.
Mental blast and subdue for w/e reason are an identical attack in the same set now...yay.
Psi is the best set for doms to deal with the increased endurance burn due to drain psyche.
Psi assault is not abnormally benefited by the addition of IO's. None of the st attacks take very long to recharge. PSW and Psyscream recharge slowly so you won't be cycling them on the same spawn in most teams. Extra recharge benefits drain psyche, but whether that is of more value than getting bu, fe, aim, or powerboost up more often is debatable.
Psi assault is already the "most survivable" set due to the regen buff of DP. So IO'ing for additional +regen makes less of an impact that it does for normal doms in terms of reducing downtime. Same for +recovery.
The set can benefit quite a bit from +def as you can then layer that with the +regen and the aoe -rech.
Once you have enough recharge so that you have domination and DP up often enough to fuel you I'd slot for defense. I'd go perma dom+ 30% ish s/l def myself. Scorp shield+weave+cj+3% IO = 32% s/l def. You'll be in melee a lot, so s/l makes more sense than ranged def.
Make sure you get your hp accolades, same as for old /psi.
Psi assault is neither awesome or notsome... psi assault IS FINE

Incorrect. What happened was that Doms in general and most of Psi Assault in particular were underperforming; they deliberately left the bug in because /Psi without the bugged version of PS would have been complete garbage, instead of mostly garbage. Now that Castle had the chance to go over Dom powers, he rebalanced the whole set so you won't suck from 1-37 anymore.

This is true but it's not what people want to hear. They want their horribly bugged power. They conveniently forget that, even with the changes, it one of the best powers in the game and certainly the best dom aoe.
Heck, I wanted PSW too but I wasn't going to go through 37 levels of suck to get to it KNOWING that eventually the devs would get around to fixing this grossly over powered attack.
But now i love /psi. My ice/psi dom is just about the hit 30 and all the -recharge with psi drain I'm very hard to kill with a lot of damage potential to anything not psi resistant.
