travel + new player questions

Wow a forum without a new player section?... oh well.

Hi my and my girlfriend recently got accounts and are enjoying the game immensly... however, aside from the jet pack thats given for getting the hero vs villian edition, I've noticed that getting around is a large pain in the rear. The train helps but its mostly a matter of speed. Many missions require traveling .7 miles to the train station and then another 600 yards to the building. Aside from flight and sprint (which vastly improves the travel time) is there any kind of way to get around in this game? In other mmos I've played hitting level 20-40 meant that you gained some kind of faster getting around skill.
I saw that flight, and speed were powersets however, it seems rather limited to have to waste a power on something that doesnt match a theme or something... Iam looking for like a vehicle or something. Iam not looking to fight with the skill or item so much as get around a bit quicker.

and on that note, what skills improve getting around? I admit I know pretty much nothing about getting around- was it stupid of me not choosing flight or speed as my first power set? Any help here would be great- be it advice or anything else.

I am scrapper currently katana/fast reflexes + jumping (as I thought the jumping fit in theme wise well with the fast reflexes though speed might have better.)
Also any other general new player help would be great. (to avoid the probably debate- I dont really plan on hanging around the AE much right now as although it sounds fun playing player designed missions, at the moment it seems like people are using it as a substitute for the dev content. which would kind of ruin my expirance I think.

Right now we're doing some stuff around the hollows and are around level 9 or 10. Would you recommend for immersion/fun wise sticking around there? and if not where should we go? both of our contacts sent us there- if we go back to the contacts that sent us there, will they have something else for us?

Ive heard something about a clockwork story arc- and I started a bit of an arc I think with conflict between hellions and skulls or something. Any have any random contacts we can go talk too?

Thanks for all your help.

Okay, wow...one sec...

There are no "skills" or "items" in this game...you have your powers from your primary and secondary powersets and from pool powersets and Ancillary pools. The only "items" in this game that actually improve your chatacer are DOs, SOs, and IOs.

To get around better, at level 6 you need to take a "prerequisite" power from a travel pool-Flight, Speed, Leaping, or Teleport. Then at level 14 you can get the ACTUAL travel power from that set.

EDIT: If you got to King's Row at level 6 and start doing radio missions, after the third radio mission you will get a Safeguard mission. Successfully complete that and you'll get a Raptor pack, which allows you to fly and can be very helpful for a lowbie toon.

Also, Obligatory Wiki Link. Almost ANY question can be answered by checking the Wiki.

[/ QUOTE ]At level six (and above), you can pick up one of: Hover or Air Superiority, Jump Kick or Combat Jumping, Recall Friend or Teleport Foe, or Hasten or Flurry. Once you've selected one of those powers, at level fourteen (and above), you can select Fly, Super Jump, Teleport, or Super Speed, respectively. The four "Travel Powers" will let you get around very quickly. Additionally, you can optain a temporary flight pack (2hrs of flight) when you're level 5+, and you can obtain a temporary jump pack at lv10+.

[/ QUOTE ]The contact that sent you to Winnicot should have more stuff available for you. However, I think the Hollows is fun, anyway

If you ever run out of missions to do, you should be able to talk to one of your previous contacts, and they'll give you a new contact.

There are four Power Pools that are collectively known as the "Travel Powers". Most toons should choose at least one of these sets to use for general getting around. These are:

Flight
Teleportation
Speed
Leaping

The third power in each set is a main travel power. In order to get one of these powers, you need to be level 14, and you also need to have already taken one of the first two powers in the set. So, for example, if you want to take Fly as a travel power, you'll need to be level 14 and you'll have to already have taken either Hover or Air Superiority with one of your earlier power selections.

Which travel power will suit you best depends entirely on your preferences. Here's a very quick breakdown of each:

Flight -- Generally the easiest to use, and the safest. The main disadvantage is that it is not as fast as the other powers

Teleportation -- Very useful and fast when mastered, but also rather cumbersome to use. Many support-oriented characters like to take this power pool to get the "Teleport Friend" power, which has many uses.

Super Jump -- A good compromise between Flight and Super Speed. You can jump high enough to get to -most- places, and your travel speed is faster than Flight.

Super Speed -- Very fast, but no vertical movement. This is less of a handicap than it once was, as you can toggle on your jetpack if you come to an obstacle you can't easily get over or around. This also becomes easier to use the better you know the terrain in the various zones. Has the added benefit of giving the user a degree of Stealth when active.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Leave the Hollows, at least for a bit. Go back to the contact that sent you to Wincott and see what they have for you. After that go to Kings Row and talk to the Detective there. He will give you a Police Band Radio (this will show up in your Contact list on your Navigation). You can use the Radio to get missions.

After doing 3 Radio missions (for this level range, it goes up to 5 missions after level 20) you will be able to get a Safeguard mission from the Detective. If you complete the (Atlas Park) Safeguard mission you will get a Temp Travel Power (Raptor Pack). This will allow you to Fly around until you can get your own travel power and will make travel in the Hollows much easier.

Make sure you do this before level 10. If you have to you can stop your XP under Menu > Options > General. If you wait until after level 10 you will end up getting the Kings Row safeguard instead, which rewards the Zero-G Jump Pack, instead of the Raptor Pack.

See my Guide to a Timeless Safeguard for easy instructions on how to complete a Safeguard quickly and successfully.

Not to worry - you found the right place to post.
First, let me say hello and welcome.

Since your questions about travel powers have been pretty thoroughly answered, let me address something else. In my experience, one of the best way to learn about the game is to find one or more experienced players in-game (i.e. on the same server and best if with similar play times) who would put you on their 'global friend' list so you can always find them when you have a question (assuming they are online at the time).

I would suggest scrolling way down on the forums front page to find the section for the server you are playing on and posting that you are new and looking for help. There are plenty of people who will go out of their way to help new players. If you happen to be on Infinity, I'd be delighted to offer my assistance. My main character on Infinity is named Ironblade and my global is @Ironblade1

As a general comment on the travel powers, the temporary ones you can get (flight pack at 5-10 and jump pack at 10-15) are really useful. Each will last for 2 hours of actual usage (i.e. actual flight time or actual jumping time). If you use it wisely and turn it off when not in use, you can easily reach level THIRTY OR FORTY before they run out. Historically, people really felt pressured to take a travel power at level 14, when they first become available. Now, you can easily put that off for quite a while if there are other powers you want to get first.

You can only get each pack once per character. If you're already too high level for one, you can 'tag along' with a lower level character who has the mission and still get it the travel power.

I wanted to tag another little thing in your comments.

At level 15, you can go to Faultline and get Jim Tremblor as a contact.
He has a story arc, and then there are a series of contacts and arcs that tell a larger story that is actually a lot of fun.

At 20 you can go to Striga Isle and find a similar experience - a sequence of contacts with arcs strung into a single macro-arc.

Croatoa will offer the same thing after... 25 I think. Again the Wiki is nice.

Oh! and welcome!

edit: and to Ironblade's point. if you are on Justice, feel free to fire me a question (global is the same as my forum handle).

You can follow the arcs in the game using Redtomax. Not on that list is the Faultline zone which I highly recommend doing. Faultline (lv15-25) is the most recent of the self-contained zone arcs for CoH.

Welcome to the Game.

I believe there's a second jetpack ou can get from a CoH mission as well. And finally, it's possible to purchase a jetpack for 10,000 inf in Grandville (CoV) or the Shadow Shard (CoH; restricted to lv40+ characters)

It's two hours of use, not possession. As long as you don't leave it toggled on when you don't need it (leveling, shopping, Auction House, etc.), it should last you quite a while, at least until you get a Travel power of your own. Thanks to the Temp Travel Powers, a lot of my characters have been putting off taking the real Travel Powers until after I get other, more important to concept, powers.

Villainside, My Soldier of Arachnos is level 33, has gotten the Raptor Pack (Atlas Mayhem), Goldbricker Pack (Marshall Brass mission), and the Zero-G Pack (King's Row Mayhem). I got the Raptor Pack at level 7, and still have over an hour of use left on it. I got the Zero-G pack at 12 and used it up by level 27. I got the Goldbricker Pack at level 17, and it has over an hour left on it. This Soldier does not have a travel power (nor is he expecting to get one). I expect at least one of the flight packs to last until I get to Grandville (level 40+), where I can earn a jet pack via the Day Job system.

New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)

For the record, you don't have to be level 40+ to buy a new Raptor Pack in Grandville. You just have to have to the 10K inf and survive getting there.

Well, I could have gotten it, and may go back for it, I just didn't feel like doing Chalmers, and did Archmage Tarixus instead.

I'd do them both. I usually can manage to get every contact in that level range completed (sans Doc Buzzsaw) before I outlevel them.

After the XP smoothing, they really need to lower the requirement to unlock Doc Buzzsaw. It is waaaaay too easy to outlevel her now, and I love her arc.

I agree. I outlevel her every time now unless I purposely turn off XP and farm for infamy. And the devs are trying to do away with the "need" for farming so...

That would be the Antigravity Matrix. It's a stand-alone mission (defeat 10 Raiders) from whichever of your contacts gives the Skyraider Secret arc.

That one proved to be a double disappointment once I finally managed to get it.

1: It is just a Raptor Pack with 90 minutes use. I was hoping, judging by the name, that it would put my character in some sort of zero G bubble or some other neat effect.

2: It gets taken away from you after you complete the mission and report in. You you can't flashback to it and use the "Quit Taskforce" option to drop the mission and keep the pack.

There are 2 others you can get as well.

First, there's the 30 day real time one that you can purchase via the PlayNC store. That gets applied to all characters (current and future) until the 30 days runs out.

There is also a 30 day real time one you can get (for a single character) by being given a Holiday Cheer from someone who has theirs left over from a previous Winter Event. That gives a random chance of getting the Holiday Rocket Pack (aka Jingle Jet), or one of several other items.

Other than straight up travel powers....

Supergroups can build bases, which include teleporter rooms, which allow quicker access to most heroside zones. You can join a supergroup if you have a full account, and start one at level 10. Bases are not small efforts, so read up a bit if this interests you.

The Pocket D Nightclub can act as as shortcut between King's Row, Faultline, Founders Falls, and Talos Island.

The Vanguard Portal can be a shortcut between Atlas, Peregrine, and Founders (I think). Level 35+ only.

The Ouroboros Portal (level 25+, and other requirements) can be a shortcut between Atlas, Talos, Independence Port, Peregrine Island, and Founders. Strangely, the Ouro Portal can also get you to "Board Train" missions... Do the Menders have some deal with Paragon City Transport?

You can purchase a one-shot teleporter to Wentworths, from Wentworths. 10K influence I think.

If you have money to spend... The Good vs. Evil Edition includes a 30min recharging teleporter to Pocket D (see above) and a jump pack, which massively amplifies your jumps. Good for capping your flight speed, or getting over vertical obstacles with Superspeed, or Superjumping really, really high.

The Mac Edition (which works fine on PCs too!) includes a 2hr recharge Mission teleporter. If the mission is selected, and includes a "door" or instance, then it will teleport you right there, across zones!

Any Edition can be used to UPGRADE your existing account, which will add the goodies to all characters, existing or to be created, and one month to your playtime. Each edition can only be used once on an account though.

Various Day Jobs can also accumulate travel abilities, including Wentworths teleporters, base teleporters, and jet packs.

Tog's Newbie Academy.

The zone pages are not really even started, and there may be some other unfinished pages as well.

My first short story (detective fiction) came out in Jan-2012. Other stories and books to follow, I hope. Because of "real writing". COH was a big part of that happening.

Next time you get to choose a power simply choose Super Jump and you will be leaping tall buildings in a single bound. Not really really tall buildings but definitely tall buildings.

Oh and incidentally. Though many people will warn you against staying in the Hollows there are many of us who enjoy the story arc there. Especially the Frostfire mission.
