Yeah, I played CoH/V on my laptop with it. It improved the performance, and increased the time it took before my laptop's fan to start blowing harder.
Also I wanted to add for those with a connect account, you can beta the antivirus that microsoft has. So far its been good testing it. It seems light and doesnt have that bloat feeling that some antiviruses have.

Microsoft is running a technet subscription promotion where its $100 off for a 1 year subscription to technet. Normlly $349 but with the code its $249. Basically its access to alot of Microsoft software for 1 year. This might be good for the people who have multiple pcs at home because you can generate as many keys as you need. Just remember its for "testing" purposes only . This will get you access to windows 7 faster than anywhere else. Promotion code is "TEYFY09" for US residents only. Source

it is not just for testing. Technet gives you access to every OS all the way back to dos, server OSes, SQL, SBS..just a ton of stuff. Everything is licensed up to 10 copies - fully licensed fully supported - in addition you get two full MS support calls access to MS online training - early beta and rc programs...
Even after your subscription expires - all the copies you have installed from the site are still considered licensed. If your at all interested in learning MS products, getting your MCSA, MCSE..etc..this is an awesome deal.
And while we're on the subject, check out your various retailers.
Discount pricing on upgrades 'til July 11. (Preorders, of course.) Home Premium (which is actually worthwhile) for $49, Pro for $99. (I don't think they're doing this for Ultimate.)
Note XP and 2k users would have to do a clean install, while Vista users can install over the prior version.
Guys,
To to add my $0.02 here, I love my TechNet Subscription and use it quite abit. In fact, I have two (one for work and one for home). If you run more than 2 computers, it is a great investment not only for the operating systems but for Office suites and other Microsoft products (SQL Server, Exchange Server, etc).

Disappointed to see that the "upgrade" from XP to 7 is actually a clean install. Of course I'm planning on upgrading to the 64-bit version (running 32-bit XP Pro right now) so I guess it's really a moot issue. Just gotta figure out what I want saved, and how I'm going to do it.

[/ QUOTE ]Why would you ever want to take the risk in doing an upgrade with a new OS? I understand some folks dont want to change settings again and what not but it simply not worth the risk of other problems from your previous OS turning up in your upgrade install. If it does you just end up having to do a clean install anyways. Besides dont you know doing upgrade is....you know dirty?

True, but at least you're getting a "full install" for an "upgrade" price. Saves the trouble of having old programs or registry keys gumming up the works.
I'm running W7 RC 64-bit ATM, and I'll probably be buying a copy myself.
I balk at clean installs because that's all that time I lose trying to reinstall my programs, copy files back to where I want them, make sure permissions are right, and tweak all my settings. I know there's a chance something could go wrong when I do an upgrade install, but that's a risk I'm more than willing to take (never done a clean install when putting a new OS on, except when I went from Vista back to XP, and I've never had problems resulting from the upgrade). If problems do happen, oh well, I can deal with them.
Of course I'll end up doing a clean install anyways since I'll be wanting to use the 64-bit version of Windows 7, but that brings up the matter of what to back up and how to do it. When I upgraded from Vista to XP (yes, upgraded) I realized I'd forgotten to copy several folders off my desktop, which had contained my Mids builds. Spent several hours digging around in recovery utilities to get those files back.

Meh, I'll be wiping the stain that is Vista off my system first.
I just want to mention that even if you buy the upgrade version you can do a "clean" install with it by selecting custom install. You just end up having to install it twice but it works just like in vista. When done you just delete the folder call "windows.old".

Look into the User State Migration Tool, aka USMT. I've used the USMT 3.01 successfully with various versions of XP and Vista, and 4.0 is coming out to handle Windows 7. Can read from XP Pro, Vista, and 7; and write to Vista and 7. It reads from both 32 and 64, but you can only write 32 to 32, 32 to 64, or 64 to 64.

Hrm... might end up with the 32-bit version anyways, just because it's easier to find drivers and there's less worry about compatibility issues. I guess that's worth more to me than being able to use the other 768MB of RAM.
However, I know USMT is a command-line tool, and I have a dislike for command line apps (one of the reasons I've yet to really embrace Linux). I'll have to dig around in the documentation, unless there's an equivalent app with a GUI.
EDIT: It also seems to me that the documentation for USMT is written as though it's purpose is to migrate from one computer to another, not to a clean install of an OS on the same computer (i.e. wipe the hard drive and install).

[/ QUOTE ]Actually its the 64-bit drivers that are more stable. They may be a little bit harder to find but I avoid that issue totally by buying stuff that has vista 64-bit on the box. You should always check with the manufacterers site for drivers before you buy anyways. Besides that why would you want to sell your self short on ram by using the 32-bit version? CoX is ram hungry as hell and there is no telling if the requirements are going to go up when going rogue hits just like it did when cov came out. If you want to learn about custom vista/windows 7 installs you definately want to google or bing the WAIK (windows automated installation kit) Sure there is a bit of dos type commands involved but you can integrate all your drivers and patches right into the install media. That way when you burn it and reinstall (hopefully cleanly) you save a ton of time. Alternatively you can build an image specifically to your machine so all you got to do is add the patches overtime using the kit. So if you have a virus or something you just reimage but your up to date. You can even update CoX with this application as it lets you manipulate the files from windows explorer. Basically what I do is run virtual box, customize the install like I want it, run all the updates, install office and other apps. Capture the image, add in the drivers and put it to the side for later when I need to do a reinstall.

I'm confused... is Windows 7 just 64-bit ready no matter what? All the pre-order things I've been seeing on Newegg and Best Buy don't mention 32 or 64 bit, and I was wanting to move up to 64 bit so Windows will see all 4 GB of my ram. Can anyone help clarify this?

[/ QUOTE ]For retail it is not oem. For that you have to specify. Either way if you dont get the one you want you can always request the other disc from microsoft directly for a small fee. Remember its the disc you use that determines whether its 64 bit or not, the key just determines what flavor of vista/windows 7 you get (home premium, ultimate, business, upgrade or full install).

The original design was for people doing a move + upgrade. However, I've used it with an external USB drive to go back onto the same computer after a reinstall a number of times, and it saves considerable effort. The more customized you have your various settings, the more worthwhile it is to use, basically.
Note that it doesn't restore the actual programs; you re-install your software *first*, and then run the USMT as pretty much the final step. It should move not only most of your files, but all the various registry settings that control how you use the various programs. If you've got files stored in weird places elsewhere on your hard drive it's not going to find them, however; have to move those yourself.

If that's the case, I really don't understand why two major suppliers of computer software, etc. do not let you specify. On Newegg's site, for instance, you can choose between pre-ordering the Home Premium and Professional edtitions... that's all I'm seeing. They don't have 32-bit or 64-bit versions to choose from. I searched around in their software section and searched a bit, but that's all I see. Same for Best Buy.

I don't know what EvilRyu's talking about, but at least on Newegg, the two upgrade options (pro and home) are for both 32bit and 64bit.

Ah, see, I noticed it mentioned 32-bit and 64-bit in the hardware requirements, but I wasn't sure if that meant it would work for either or not. I didn't want to just assume, but this all clears it up. Thanks, all. I'm probably going with the Home Premium as I don't really have anything that would need to run XP (unless I have some old PC games that won't run otherwise, but I'm not sure if that will be worth it). I don't really remote desktop, either. Not to mention spending $50 less is a good idea for me right now.
