I've done some of that, Pogo. We switched to whole wheat pasta, I drink (till I got hooked on iced coffee) lots of water, and we use brown rice instead of white rice. I don't eat bread much, if at all, but when I do, I try to get whole grain bread when I can. *said while sipping on an iced coffee*

weight loss: There are a bunch of studies (of which I have no links) that show a casual connection between weight gain and diet soda. Seems the artificial sweeteners raises your craving for fatty foods. Try drinking iced tea with lemon (no sugar) or if you need it sweet, start mixing in water for orangeade, etc.
Another "trick" is, most people confuse thirst for hunger. If you think you're hungry, try drinking some water first before getting something to eat.
Finally, since you have a child and they probably want to get out of the house too, put them in a stoller and walk around the neigborhood. Get hubby to push. Walking for 20+ minutes 3 times a week (assuming it is a quick paced and not slow paced) will increase your cardio and improve your body's ability to process starch and sugar.
How about the celery diet?

Lock her in the bathroom and slip celery under the door until she loses the desired amount.

Missy makes me run if we go for a walk, and lately she isn't happy in the stroller. The kid has run damn near a straight mile before without really slowing down.
