Get rid of the music during the CoH install

A suggestion...

When you're installing CoH to your computer, it plays this annoying song in an infinite loop, over and over and over and over and over..

For the love of all that's Holy and Decent, please get rid of it.

The song is horrid. Your normal PC user can't kill once it's going either. If you want to listen to music or play a movie while the game is installing: you're pretty much screwed.

I had to use HijackThis to kill it.

IMHO: not a very nice "first impression" for some people.

There is music? I've never heard this... lol

(Then again, I'll assume the OP is referring to a disc install.. which I have never done)

2. A lot of us liked that awesome music playing when we installed the game. It's a matter of taste, personally.

If you're into that kind of music, more power to ya.

But for the rest of us who DON'T want to hear it: give an option to kill it. I've 1000 songs on iTunes I'd rather be playing.

I want to hear this music so I can judge it for myself. Where can i find it? lol

hre's an idea.... take out you ipod/walkman/portable cd palyer and turn off your speakers.

Turn volume down?

Here's that "awesome" song. The original is a 10MB Wave file. I converted it to MP3 for the sake of download. Other than that: it's the full tune.

Now imagine listening to that over and over and over and over.

Turning off your PC speakers/volume shouldn't have to be done. They should just get rid of the song or have a check box to kill it. There's nothing wrong with a tune playing for a few seconds when the installer starts... tons of games do it. But they don't play music thru an entire 10 or 20 minute install, because it gets annoying. ESPECIALLY if that song is looping a 30 second tune.

Annoying isn't a strong enough word IMHO... but I'd get modded for saying the alternative.

You can always mute your speakers; and to date, I've yet to see a n MMO that DOESN'T play something in the background as it installs, even WoW.

That's sorta the whole point. I like to multitask with my rigs: listening to music, installing programs, downloading something, running a converter, and texting the girls at the same time. Turning off the speaker, because an installer won't stop playing a tune is a setback.

I know it's not the end of the world: but giving a means to kill it would be nice.

I'm pretty PC savy, so after I noticed it wasn't showing up in Taskmgr, I just used HighjackThis to locate the process and terminate it without ending the actual install. But not everyone is like that... and I know I can't be the only person who thinks it's bothersome.

I've played two other MMO aside from CoH - Ragnarok Online and Champions Online (beta) - neither of which play music during their install to the hard drive. Only after the program is started.

CoH should strive to be better than WoW - so this is one good step.

I can't believe someone is actually complaining about this.

I can't wait to see what trash this guy spews on the forums after he actually plays.

The heck? You mean people can't make a suggestion for improvement? Now everything I say is trash because I'm offering my opinion to make the game better (in this case the installer)? I'm not complaining just to complain: I'm also providing an honest answer to a possible solution.

It's called constructive criticism: opposite of what you're doing.

You're also assuming I just started playing CoH all of a sudden. Previous time I did an install, I didn't have the speakers on for whatever reason that was. This time I was listening to iTunes. As I said before: it was annoying.

I'll admit that at first I listened to the song: but after 3 minutes of the same 30 seconds repeating, it got old fast.

Aye. Champions was an online download.

Ragnarok Online is a disc install though.

This is all great and all, but how many times do you plan on installing the game? and is turning the volume down during this incredibly rare occasion really that hard? lol that is some kind of disorder I have not heard of yet.

Three times actually (three rigs). Not counting the virtual cluster.

Is it all that hard for the dev's to consider removing the song? Just because something doesn't happen all the time, doesn't mean that when it does occur, it's not annoying.

Look... I've given my opinion: and those who don't like the idea, have only degenerated into doing vague personal attacks (i.e. poisoning the well). I see enough of that on FOX News and civil rights rallies: so unless someone has something constructive to offer - I'm out.

It's such a minor thing that I really don't see the Devs taking the time to code in a button to turn it off. Even then it would only show up in the newest box version. Seeing as they just put out Architect Edition, it would be some time before the next box will come out. I hate to say it, but you may as well just get used to turning off your speakers when it's loading.

[/ QUOTE ]You're getting this flak here because this isn't a suggestion forum. This is the BUGS/TECH ISSUES forum. Your post has nothing to do with a BUG or a TECHNICAL problem. Your post is a suggestion. So if you take your SUGGESTION down to the SUGGESTIONS forum, you'll probably be better received.

You *CAN* do many things. And, on the internet, you *SHOULD* expect to get flamed for posting in a completely wrong forum section. What you are discussing is NEITHER a 'technical issue', NOR a 'bug'.

P.S. While some people will jump on anyone who posts in the wrong section, I normally don't. However, since you made a point of discussing your technical expertise, you should be held to a higher standard than the average netizen who can barely deal with email.

If character slander is the automatic response for someone posting something in the wrong section of a forum, it says a lot about the community. There are dozens of forums I visit, where if a person makes a mistake, it doesn't result in: "you're a moron" or "your ideas are nothing but trash." Not everyone is flawless or all knowing.

Here it seems, one is automatically justified in insulting others for a mistake or having a different take on something. I'll keep that in mind... if being belligerent and self-righteous is the norm, then I held this community to a higher standard than I should have. My mistake: it most certainly won't happen again.

The original post was correctly placed into this forum thread. It does not belong anywhere else. By posting here, he/she has discovered a way to download the game without having to listen to the horrible music. Downloading problems = technical issues.

There shouldn't be trolls in this forum.

[/ QUOTE ] But the Original Post was not about downloading problems... so your logic does not apply. Getting rid of installation music (or giving somebody the option to turn it off) is still a suggestion, not a technical issue or bug.

Yes, I provided a way to get around it.. but I provided it as another suggestion.. not because it was specifically asked for. Posting in the suggestion forum could have yielded the same results.

Either way.. new players might not know what the updater is or how it works, so they'd probably install off the disc also, and possibly have the same "problem"... so the suggestion is still valid regardless if there is a workaround or not.

"Get rid of the music during the CoH install" is the subject. The problem the user is experiencing is that they can't turn off the sound when they are downloading, yes? And there isn't an option to do so, yes? So the technical issues forums supplied a way to download it without having to listen to the bad music.

How does that logic not apply? It isn't a bug, it could most obviously be used as a suggestion, but it could just as easily go here. The player received a way to download without the music. End of thread.

Edit: the way I see it, if you are experiencing something that is in conflict with another program you have running, such as Windows Media Player playing music at the same time as the CoH downloading music, and it is pretty horrible and forcing you to use Hijack This to stop the music from playing, that is a Technical issue.
