Mob-Stealing, or Lending a Helping Hand?

Just wanted to comment on the little red box everyone is up in arms over.

Its only purpose is to release NCSoft from liability. No one is policing it and no one's account is going to be banned over it. It's a 'cover your [censored]' statement and nothing more.

I will decide what's appropriate for my children, not some company, thank you very much.

[/ QUOTE ]

All it takes is for someone like Jack Thompson it find out that they are not enforcing the rule.

[/ QUOTE ]

Except Mr. Thompson has been disbarred ( YAYAYAYAY!!!! ) and that little box doesn't carry any legal weight whatsoever.

It's nice that he got disbarred, but he hasn't stopped. He's just not the one standing in front of the judge anymore. There are other lawyers out there that are more than happy to sue for something like this.

He has lost a lot of clout for being disbarred. And the suing part isn't going to happen. Yet again, the statement has no legal weight, so there's nothing to sue over.

Oddly enough, after reading this thread yesterday I was subjected to a kill-stealing incident (which hadn't happened in a long time to me.) Normally I don't mind so much, but I was in the Hollows doing a patrol mission (you know, the 'arrest 10 Outcasts' one you get right away), and I had four more to arrest. I found a mob of exactly four Outcasts and as I was defeating the third, someone jumped in and killed the fourth before I could get a shot off. I was so mad.

If I'm running around and beating up thugs as something to waste time on, it's one thing... but sometimes we actually have to defeat a certain number of foes for a mission and someone kill-stealing makes a big difference in our ability to get it done in a reasonable amount of time.

Later, I saw a GM's response to my e-mail. It basically said that I should move to another zone, work on other missions, etc. So yeah, "kill-stealing" isn't really actionable, either, even if it is harassing. But really, I don't care that much. As far as irritating things go, this is way down towards the bottom of the list.

[/ QUOTE ]

Did you complain about Kill Stealing, or did you complain that despite repeated attempts to get the other party to stop, the harassment continued, in your petition?

When has that ever stopped activists? They sue knowing that they will lose. They want the press to see that they are taking on the big bad company to protect children. Their goal is to cost a company so much money in legal fees (as well as public image) that it's just cheaper to start enforcing the rule.

The more common term hereabouts is kill-stealing. It is considered impolite, though there is no formal rule against it. If another player follows you around doing it constantly, there may be grounds for a petition claiming harassment.

[/ QUOTE ]

From experience, probably not much will be done. Thankfully it doesn't often happen.

[/ QUOTE ]

Kill stealing, in and of itself, is not actionable in game.

However, if someone is following you around, refusing to team with you, and continually kill stealing then it's harassment/cyberstalking - which WILL be acted on.

[/ QUOTE ]

And, if nothing else, it establishes a history for someone that may enjoy griefing others often.

I have a hard time just watching a hero die, but at the same time I don't want to steal kill. I generally watch for awhile. If the player is low level, they're health is dropping fast, and its obvious they're in over their head I help. If Im on a defender or controller I help without killing. If Im on my scrapper I kill just enough to even the odds. If I see the player took on a mob that's purple to him and out numbers him ten to one, I sit back and enjoy the splat.

To be honest, I probably should just ignore the first situation altogether unless asked to help.

[/ QUOTE ]

I pretty well do not help any longer unless I can do it via Heals on the hero in trouble, or tossing an Ice Slick or AoE Hold (that does no damage). Too much furor potential otherwise.

And indeed, there are some folks who get FURIOUS if you heal them before they can die, etc., but what the hey, it did not even cost them any XP or badges, so pardon me and I will move along. The vast majority (99%+) will say "Thanks" in local or via Tell. I always have, since Newbhood and beyond.

I used to bind a key saying, "If you want me to help you take out these guys, hit F8 and I will assist you," so that they could signal if they needed help, but that only worked about half the time, since often the poor guys could not find F8 in time to get help.

Heroes help other heroes in situations that won't rob any XP or badges, even a smidge. The Taxibots were a tremendous help in the Hollows back in the day, porting and rezzing the poor lvl 5s who had to run across the map to the mountains. So I think heals and the like are fine, since there is no harm or foul, but I avoid attacking mobs as a general rule.

"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"

"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."

...so the solution is to cave in to them? Right, whatever. That's why they do it, because they know bully tactics win...

it's not like there are only three Hellions and everyone is camping them for credit. There are an infinite supply of bad guys, and they're everywhere. The vast majority of them are trivially easy to find, just turn around in place and you'll likely see at least three or four more groups of what it is you're looking for.

[/ QUOTE ]
Every killstealing discussion, I see this argument used. It works just as well for a reason not to KS, though.

If you see someone working on a spawn of enemies and they don't need or want your help, why join in the fight? There's another group of Hellions across the street, and two more on the next block.
