Twitter...

So I finally gave in and started a Twitter account. I'm not sold on it at all, but I haven't really found anybody interesting to follow. I'm wondering if there is any good CoX related Twitterers to follow. Anyone know?

It's not CoH related, but apparently that cat is supposed to be a real good one to follow.

I have no idea what twitter is. I saw a video of some girl doing the "twitter dance" on Youtube so she could get shown on the Ellen Degeneres tv show. I thought that was a fail right there and never looked back. Is it like... myspace/facebook or something? I'm not really sure what else it could be.

Twitter allows you to broadcast short little (150 character messages) to all the people who are interested in following you. So where ICQ would be more for one on one back and forths this is just like a general shout out.

Its so you can tweet about how your day is going and all your friends get the update.

Going to Taco Hell, brb.
Oh I shouldn't have had that.
Bio break.
Ha, guess where I'm twitting from?
The pain, the pain!

That kind of thing.

I typically use Twitter for two purposes:

1) Putting little thoughts out there that are really too small for blog entries (I have a widget that shows my Twitter feed on my Myspace profile [yes, I still use Myspce; so what?]), leaving me free to save my blog for more lengthy or rambling posts.

2) Following people/organizations/products I find interesting. Among my current followings are Adam Savage, Penn Jillette, Sabian cymbals, and Leandro's Architect Editor program.

It's certainly not for everyone, and there definitely is a subset of users who utilize it simply for narcissism fulfillment. But the ability to post essentially real-time updates of whatever you want, whenever you want, and have it sent simultaneously to theoretically the entire internet (I know that people have to navigate to your profile to see your entries, but anyone on the internet can do that) is very much awesome.

That said, I know Positron has a Twitter account. Much like his blog, though, I'm sure updates are sporadic at best. And as much as an official CoH Twitter would be cool, the nature of game development doesn't really lend itself well to that particular format. More than anything, I'd love to see the web department get us some official RSS feeds going for the developer and community digests. Right now, we don't even have a working RSS feed for the News section of the CoH website.

But not in a cult leader type of way, right? Or a stalkerish way?
Hehe seriously though, I dunno if I'm going to use twitter. I think I'll avoid it for another month... Just because I don't understand "why" it exists right now.

Let me put it in perspective...

That's what I was thinking it'd be like.

I honestly don't know why anyone would post to twitter as an individual. I mean, who really cares if I'm eating lunch?

The Titan Network twitter might be worth following, though. I might start posting some of the day-to-day things going on there, stuff like features we're working on or updates we're making. If you don't care, that's cool, it's really intended, once we get everyone on board, to be for the morbidly curious and so people can see that we're actually working on the sites.

Well, like I said, I primarily use it as a sort of real-time update generator for my Myspace page so that I don't have to either waste blog entries on really unimportant minutia or save all those little bits up and post them in a blog entry later on, at which point they may be dated if I'm commenting on current events. Others also use it as a kind of universal text-messaging service, sending messages back and forth with multiple other users.

The whole "cult of personality" aspect of it gets played up by some folks, although it does exist. Frankly, I really don't care if I have followers or not.

Maybe im to old to get it

I'm doing it out of pure curiosity.

Although I made the mistake of having updates sent to my phone, and an NFL player agent decided to update his twitter about six times at seven A.M. Pissed me off.

I don't see the point in Twitter. I would rather just call the person.

[/ QUOTE ]

But would you call 100 people?

Twitter isn't a replacement for a cell phone. It is a broadcast medium. It's a way of saying something simultaneously to all of your friends/aquaintenances. People joke about "I'm pooping!", but I love being able to say "Hey guys, half price pints at the Beer Shack tonight! Who's in for the big game?" All of my friends and co-workers see the post, and I don't have to call all of my friends individually and invite them.

Last week we had two teammates out sick for a softball game. One tweet and I had volunteers to fill in for them.

Think of it as a simple way to send a message to all of your friends at one time.

Twitter: one more ingredient in the recipe for a severely socially-disfunctional generation.

Want to know what your friend is up to? Meet them for a beer and find out in person.

Actual face-to-face conversation takes you places a Tweet never will.

Twittering is not Dialoguing. It's Announcing.

I find it rude, and maybe even dangerous, to forgo human interaction in favor of Twits, texts, emails, etc.

I worry for the younger generation, their social skills are developing along unprecedented, and entirely unexplored paths (in the course of human history).

Could lead to problems later in life when they may need those skills to succeed professionally, and in relationships.

G'luck, Twits.

You are the second person to suggest that Twitter is a replacement for talking to someone. It isn't. It is a way to contact many people without e-mail lists or posting on a bulletin board somewhere. It is BROADCAST. One-to-many.

If I call all of my friends and invite them to "meet me for a beer and find out in person", not only will it take a long time, but it forces them to respond right then. A tweet saying "anyone who wants to meet for a beer, I'll be there at 7" is convenient for everyone.

If I send an e-mail to all of my students saying that the guest speaker they are listening to at the union tonight has agreed to stop by class tomorrow and they might want to think of some questions, they won't see it until they get home (if then). If I Twitter it, they learn about it immediately.

Sitting down for a visit happens after, not instead of, Twittering.
