4 vs the 5th: professionalism in action

Back in May of 2008, when I was just starting to get into the wide world of commissioned character art, one of the first artists I contacted was Joseph Caesar. I was really taken by his CoH pieces, especially the ones he'd done of Nike IX. So I commissioned him to do a one character piece featuring PinUp Girl versus the 5th Column.

Joseph came back with a really spiffy work in progress, inked version here, and I was *very* happy with it!

Time passed. There were delays. Joseph had a lot going on, but he stayed in contact, always answered my emails. He even called me internationally on his own dime to assure me that it would get done. As he told me, he was having a hard time getting his head around the character, and he wasn't happy with the WiP. He offered a refund, but I felt comfortable waiting, and I really wanted to stick with it. He asked if it would be all right if he scrapped the work he had done, and also, if I would mind if he expanded on it a bit...

Am I crazy? I said "Heck no! Go right ahead!" And I waited with very bated breath, dying to know what he had planned.

Here is the finished piece:
4 vs the 5th

Basically, because of delays, and his own dissatisfaction with his initial work, the artist gave me 3 times what I commissioned. He did this entirely on his own. THAT is the mark of a professional and a good guy.

I'm not trying to advertise for anyone. I just feel that this kind of class and professionalism deserves to be known. It seems to be a rare thing these days in all walks of life. He has earned himself a fan for life here.

Without mentioning $$s, Joeseph has always told me he wants his work to be the standard by which I decide whether or not to spend a large sum to commission a piece of art. It's worked. If prices get up to the level he charges, 9 times out of 10 I just end up taking my work to him because I know it will be a [u]fantastic value[u] for the price. I have nothing but good things to say about working with him. Specifically, I want to say he is amazingly diligent in researching the additional elements in a scene. You ask for character X, you get it done to perfection + fully grounded in the setting. I asked for a piece with Nike IX fighting Gunslingers, I got that and a full-blown Kronos Titan as part of the backdrop - something he went out and tracked down on his own from my passing mention of the Malta Group.

100% Top Notch

Grats. That is a MIGHTY piece.

That's an amazing piece. I had an experience with another artist similar to this. Always good to hear about it when it happens.

Seeing and hearing how much he puts into the pieces he commissions is staggering. I had him watched and on that ever growing list of artist that I want to commission (that seems to get larger inversely related to my cash flow) and this just reaffirms that want.

Awesome grab Shrike.
