I hate Photoshop

I mean, seriously, what the crap [censored] doesn't the fruggin' thing have an autosave and recover function? What the eff, Adobe? What the eff?

I just lost half an inking job and about 33% of colours on a sketch I was working on. Goodbye, three hours of work! I didn't want you anyway!

I just spent a week at the Art Insitute, doing a workshop of sorts. Know what the main thing they taught us was?

CTRL+Shift+S! Every 15 minutes or so, save a new version of whatever you're working on. Turn it into a habit. That way, you'll never have to worry about losing hours of work, ever again!

Otherwise, I'm sorry to hear about your sketch. I totally know what that's like.

It's annoying.

I've taken to saving when I first create an image, then hitting Ctrl+S every five or ten minutes, just to make sure I don't lose anything major. I'm not really some kind of talented artist - heck, pretty much all I do well are logos and banners - so I can't imagine losing three hours of work, but doing what I do might save you that kind of trouble in the future.

Where do we go from here?

I have to do the same thing with Poser, else several hours of posing, cloth draping, light setup, camera setup, etc goes out the window when it (inevitably) crashes or locks up when I'm trying to render.

Anyone have an afro prop that isn't a mass of individual hair strands? Calculating the shadow map for that thing is driving my computer into a state of catatonia!

I hit save a lot, but when you're really focused, the last thing you're thinking about is saving.

It's such a simple feature that I don't understand why it's not in there. They've been doing it in word processors since the 80s!

Oh well. The one who should be most pissed it Buckeyestar, since I got bored and was drawing Invincibelle.

yeah I cant count the amount of times that has happened to me.
But it hasnt happened in a while as i have developed the habit of saving every 5 minutes

In Art
In Gaming
In Life

I learned this:

Save early, Save often, and Save before you know why.

Played a game with a statistic based on least saves = uber ending, went three hours over the course of 40% of the game, no save. Died, Game Over. I have not played the game since. I learned a valuable lesson that day. I don't trust Auto-Saves, and I don't trust my own saves. Save Twice, just in case.

I personally haven't tried these, but a google search produced those results.

Painter has an iterative save that saves the file under different file names which is the best, but also results in lots of big files, and you still have to manually save.

Autosaves are a double edged sword. Xertul is right, File Save As is your real friend. If you get to a point on a piece that you love and keep on going and really mess it up, well autosave just overwrote it.

I'm guessing you are using a tablet, intuos 2 has buttons on top that lets you one click save, you can set a button on intuos 3 as a save as button.

Of course you can just pay me to autodraw for you and you'll never worry about about pressing Ctrl Shift S ever again!

[/ QUOTE ]People say this a lot, but they really aren't.

Only crap autosaves just overwrite your original file. In Word (and all other good programs), it makes a second file which is periodically updated automatically. The first one is only updated when you do so.

They've been building safety swords for a long time now!

Thanks for the links. I'm going to firebomb Adobe. See you guys later!

Ugh Foo, that's awful.

When I first started using Photoshop I did it to learn to create skins for UT2003. I had a very similar thing happento me. The power flickered at my house.

Lost three hours worth of work. Hell, I didn't even know where to start to retrace my steps. I went out the next day and bought a battery backup for my PC.

Been there, done that, felt exactly the same.

When I'm on a creative roll, I simply forget about everything else. Next thing I know, I've got two hour's work dangling over the void.

Well, there are advantages of doing the line work by hand, on real paper.. You can't control-z now matter how many times you do it mentally, but you never have to save!

You went three hours without saving?! Wow... Sounds like you need to change your working habits.

Nice save Foo...

too bad you didn't save earlier!

Sorry, I couldn't help it.
I've had that happen to me before, and it does suck.

It's a pain. The problem (?) is that Photoshop is generally very stable, so I don't worry too much about saving and save as I finish stages.

They're just setting me up to fail. Dirty bastids.

Seriously though, I shouldn't have to train myself to compensate for a program's failings! That's just crazy talk and I will have my revenge.
