Invulnerability tankers and the Defense soft cap
I too would like to say that this is a great guide. I paired my Inv with fire as its secondary and I can sit in +4 mobs, walk away to grab a drink, come back and my health is still in the green.
Although I'm really happy that I finished my build earlier last month. Have you seen the new prices on Reactive Armors? The prices have skyrocketed! |
COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes
I just a couple of days ago sold a few level 24-25 recipes; they went for ~200k each. Are you only looking at the price of level 40?
|
I have been making quite a bit of Inf on radio as well as AE missions, but I am still not sure just over 40 million can cover the Reactive sets with current prices.
Protector: Tulare 50 Inv/SS/EM-ph1x3r 47 Bots/Traps

Thanks! This guide helped me a lot with what I wanted to do with my Invul/Fire, though I did go with a bit more of a pricey version >.> 3 LotG's and 2 sets of Kinetic Combat, still have 1 set of Smashing Haymaker though since I didn't have another set of KC available :3
Build turned out quite nicely, there's no such thing as too much defense right? with no enemies, I'm pretty much at 40% s/l defense, 1 enemy basically puts me at 50%
Both your guides are great, CMA. I've read over them several times, but never used them because I never had an Invuln concept that worked for me. Well, I've got one now and the first thing I did was pull up your guides.
I got a lot out of them, but some of the info is dated. Inherent Stamina in particular makes things a lot different, and Alignment Merits all but eliminate any worry about overpriced or understocked IOs.
So, any chance for a revisit on one or both guides?

I ran up this build recently for an Invul/SM Tanker and I'm pretty happy with it. It's a bit expensive but I'm a patient player and none of the sets are purple.
I didn't stress S/L defense as much as I did Resistance. He also has Dull Pain up almost all the time granting him an additional 60% Hit Points.

You should still be really tough for 90% of everything in the game. But against some of the corner cases, you're going to feel damn squishy.
While the +HP is nice and all it doesn't really help you when you're defense debuffed down to nothing and always getting hit.
If you're happy with the build, great. But you could squeeze a lot more longevity out of the build.
Very nice guide and very timely for me too. I've just been levelling up a dark/invuln tanker and wanted to softcap defence by IOs - freeing me up to take the spiritual incarnate alpha slot.

-Playing since COH beta and still love the game!
Great post, as someone new to tanking, this will be of great help to me as I try and create a SS/Inv tanker.
Are the numbers given in the original post still current or have these sets changed since August of '09?
Thanks,
-Buxley

COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes
None of the numbers have changed; the only real change that effects the guide is the inherent Fitness pool change in issue 19. Incarnate buffs also are a factor but obviously only for level 50 players.

Still have my original softcap build. But here's the build I'm rocking currently.
3 Reactive Armor 4-piece sets
3 Aegis 3-piece sets
3 Kinetic Combat 4-piece sets
1 Mocking Beratement 6-piece set
1 Steadfast Protection Unique
1 Thunderstrike 6-piece set
2 Eradication 3-piece sets
Everything else is optional (and stupidly expensive).

If we roll back from this and simply go with common defense IOs and pull the PVP IO.
You come up JUST short on F/C but are soft-capped to everything else (and your "resting" endurance consumption rises a bit).
I have a Brute built the same way as this and he...is...AWESOME!
- Run into a huge mob
- Stand there and yawn (with the ostentatious hand over the mouth gesture) while your fury goes ballistic.
- Hit Rage.
- Spring Attack
- Foot Stomp
- Mop up whatever's left with your ST attacks.

It'll be interesting to see how survivable Might of the Tanker will make a softcapped tank, particularly with Resilience thrown in. I might even be able to work in perma Dull Pain with enough tweaking, and then there's the occasional click of Unstoppable ...

You're going to keep and slot a power you'll, maybe, use once a year? If that?
Anything that's killing an Invuln tank through Softcap is going to kill you through Softcap+Unstoppable too. Even if you're only investing a base slot into a power, there are other things out there that can make you more survivable or make combat easier.
I took Unstoppable as mainly an ego thing. I mean how cool is it to be softcapped defensively AND hardcapped to resists? :-)
But yeah, it's almost never needed.
