Invulnerability tankers and the Defense soft cap
Okay, have more or less finalized my defense build.
Everything, save the purples, are already in place.
Bids are out on the purples, though I don't expect them to come in right away.
I could sacrifice some defense for better recharge (LOTGs), but I actually like how darn tough he is and would rather not sacrifice.
Common IOs and Purples are L50
All set IOs save Resist Energies and Resist Elements are L33 or max level for the IO set (Pounding Slugfest and Regenerative Tissue are L30)
The two exceptions are L35 and L38 respectively (Level taken +3) so I lose the set bonuses only when I lose access to those powers.
So while this build isn't absolutely capped on it's resistances due to lower-than-max-level for the IO sets, the differences are less than half a percent.
However, it loses very little in the way of defenses when exemplaring down.

I hope this isn't too dumb of a question, but would a similar idea work with a Willpower build? I've messed around in Mids and it certainly seems doable, although I haven't seen any guides of that nature floating around.

WP doesn't get QUITE the same boost that Invuln does, but you can still put together quite a respectable tanker.
Here's something I just kinda threw together. It could probably be optimized in several places, but I just went at it cold since my only WP toon is currently a Stalker.
Edit: Just looking at it again.
That's some CRAZY energy/neg defense (about 3 percent shy of softcap).
Nice regen too. And you're going to be recovering almost 3x your resting endurance. Factor in Conserve power and you should have damn few endurance problems. EVER.

So far all ive seen is low numbers with the occassional soft cap number. My DM/Invuln soft capped defence to every type except psionic. Hes not the fastest killer out there but good luck killin him in about 95% of situations in PvE. I gave up all my recharge but gained and unkillable tank his AoE dmg isnt as high as some tanks but his ST dmg is fairly decent. I have tanks that are build for surviving alot while dishing out lots of dmg but this time i wanted a true tank that could stand longer then some stone tanks.

How much does that build cost that can make an invuln/ tanker almost as tough as a stoner? And what is a good set up for an invuln/axe tank?
I read this guide this morning and at lunch I respeced a lvl 25 invul/ss slotting more or less as per your suggestions. There were not enough reactive armor recipes/enh on the market at the time but managed to get a couple from the set in temp invul, resist physical dmg, unyielding, and tough to bring me near the cap for damage resistance for smashing/lethal (88.7%). Tossed red fortune in invincibility for now and my defense is somewhere around 12-16% not accounting for invincibility mobs.
Only had time to run a quick mission but I already saw the difference in survivability from the last time I played the dude. End is an issue but that should enhance itself out as I level him cause now I will play him.

I am building a new Invulnerability tanker (Inv/DM) based at least partially on this guide.
I do have the Kinetic Combat already. They were all bought with merits, either earned by the character or by some other --- what's a Defender going to do with set bonuses, anyways? I refuse to pay the prices the market seems to be asking for .... well, pretty near anything.
Dark Melee is good for this. It allows you to pick up debuff sets that are out of reach for more conventional melee sets.

Mocking Beratement for taunt should still be dirt cheap... most of the recipes should be at well under vendor trash prices. The Steadfast unique is still pricey; your best bet is probably buying it with merits, I believe it's only around 75 merits... that's two of the low-mid level task forces.
All in all, and leaving out salvage (which is at completely insane prices; I'd run a few AE missions and get the salvage via tickets) with a little patience you can probably get it done for around $20-30 million. It cost me about $8 million when I did it in issue 13. But then, it's vastly easier to actually GET influence nowadays so it's probably a wash.

Realistically you're highly unlikely to ever get more than 6-8 enemies in range at once time unless you're fighting Rikti Monkeys or something like that; normal size mobs simply won't fit in the 8' AOE. I always base my defense figures assuming only a single enemy in range; that way I know my defenses are maxed when I really need them fighting an AV or other single hard target.
There's no need to wait until 50 to get the sets you need; you can slot your armors with level 30 Reactive Armor and not loose any real value from them; you'd still be very close to the ED cap. Here's some numbers for you based on slotting level 25 Reactive Armor:
- S/L resist - 89.9%
- E/N resist - 30.2%
- S/L resist - 90%
- E/N resist - 31.3%
Slotting the Smashing Haymaker set in your attacks should be dirt cheap; and the Mocking Beratement for Taunt is the next best thing to free. Why not enjoy the benefits of a nearly unkillable tanker while you're still leveling?

In case you're confused by that last sentence, let's give an example. Take the Smashing Haymaker set; it offers the following set bonuses:
- 2.2% mez resistance (worthless)
- 1.13% Hit Points
- 1.88% S/L defense
Now let's take a set you've slotted at 50; and the IO's are level 50. Again, everything works fine at 50... but if you exemp below level 47 you'll loose the set bonuses (but not the straight enhancement power of the IO's).
That's why in my opinion there's little point in holding out for higher level set IO's. There's nothing in my recommended IO's that isn't available as a level 30 IO; the critical ones actually stop at level 40.

I am softcapped for S/L/E/N/F/C with 1 enemy in Invincibility range on my INV/SS. Near perm DP. Capped HP with DP running. 48.5hp/s regen when HP capped. No unstoppable, no purple and no PVP IOs.
He stands alone in just about every situation.

My attacks average 40-50% end reduction and most of the toggles are 50% or higher end reduction. Those are all byproducts of the sets I've slotted for defense so it's no sacrifice. There's room for a couple sets of Gift of the Ancients in Tough Hide and Weave... those are good for 3.6 bonus endurance and 4% bonus recovery. I also have all the +end accolades for another +10 endurance. Well, I think I've every stat-boosting accolade of any type; after all the character's been level 50 since issue 4.
I've been pondering adding the new Physical Perfection power to the build; the question is what to drop for it and if it's worth the change.

If you're fine on END now I see no reason to take Physical Perfection.

Ahh, accolades, that explains it. I've tried just about every build & enhancement combo I could think of & afford over the years (although I've never accumulated much to invest in sets) but always got distracted by a new alt idea before getting into accolades.

I offered to make my husband an IO build for his level 50 Invuln/EM tanker. We haven't played in awhile and he reached 50 with his tanker a LONG time ago, and I'm more IO-savvy than he is. He said his biggest desire with IOs for his tanker is greater survivability, and this looks like the way to do it. Great guide! I can't wait to try it out!
This is the build I came up with for my Invul/Elec Tank. I'm well aware that I can do much better in the S/L and E/NE areas, but I wanted to somewhat cover the gaping hole in Invul that is Psi attacks. I think it's fairly good all around. Note that all numbers are with 1 mob in invincibility Range... With 7 mobs in range I'd have soft capped defences aside from Psi.
Defence: 37% S/L. 38% F/C, 36.5% E/NE, and 30% Psi
Resistance: 90% S/L: Around 30% To everything else bar Psi.
365% Regen
172% Recovery
40% Recharge
One of the things that I focused the most on was getting my defences to over 32.5% so I'm only one small purple away from softcap. I fell 2.5% short on Psi..but there is no more room for powers to slot for Psi defence, lol. Anyways, luckily I already have the Hecatomb set crafted and waiting to be slotted. What do you guys think? Any suggestions/advice?
EDIT: Been playing with Mids since I posted this, and I realized that if I swap Build Up for Chillblain from the Arctic Mastery and slot that with a full Apocalypse set I can get the Psi Defence range I wanted, plus a hefty recharge bonus. But that would be a little long -term since I only have 3/6 of the Apocalypse set so far.

When I built my Invuln I just used the positionals I'd idadvertantly built to get to the softcap for everything else to get my psi defence and then added the psi resists from Impervium armour sets. That should give you some more room to build up your core defences as sacrificing that much S/L/E/N/F/C to protect yourself against pure psi attacks isn't going to work out better in the long run unless your hunting down every last psi blast foe you can just to prove a point.
The pellet with the poisons in the Vessel with the Pessel, the Chalice from the Palace has the brew that is true...

Click on Powers, then Combat Attributes.
Expand your attributes and right-click on whichever attribute you want to monitor and select "Monitor Attribute".
You'll get a monitor window that comes up and you can drag it pretty much anywhere.
