Vista or Windows Server 2008 Crashes and Lock ups!
As a Vista 64 user, I'm as frustrated as anyone else with the crashing and lock up issues. I'm no programmer, so I can only speculate what the problem may be at this point. All I know is that even after SP2 and driver updates, the game continues to crash.
If the crashing issues ARE a problem with the software, and not the OS, then I sincerely hope NC Soft\Paragon Studios will be addressing this ASAP, otherwise it's possible they will see an exodus of Vista 64 users from their player base.
Question: I noticed that on the load up screen, CoX displays a "Games for Windows" badge. To keep this badge, doesn't the game have to meet certain programming standards? I mean how can it be labeled as such if it DOESN'T run on a Windows OS like Vista?
Are there ANY Vista (64 or 32) players out there for whome the game runs well? Please reply if this is you! Thanks!
It runs quite well for me. I had to do a bit of tweaking to my graphics settings, but that was only due to having an ATI video card. The tweaks I made are the same as those recommended by BillZBubba in the first post in his thread on the ATI cards. I'll slowly be tweaking things up in the next couple of months to find that best settings I can get by with.
As for the Games For Windows brand, there are 4 requirements for a game to be able to use this branding and part of that is testing by not only the publisher of the game but Microsoft as well. You can read more about it here.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Thanks for the reply Texas_Justice! I'm glad to see that the stated GFW standards included:
"2) Compatibility. Games for Windows branded titles work on Windows XP and Windows Vista based PCs, including both 32- and 64- bit editions."
Naturally, I understand that these are general standards, and that no one can account for the many different hardware configs out there.
However, it looks like a good percentage of CoX\Vista players are having issues. No hard stats of course, but from the number of current threads about it on the boards, it certainly seems that Vista compatibility is an ongoing issue. If that's true, then it begs the question: Just how rigorous is the GFW testing anyway?
Ah well, I guess its sorta like asking: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
A: The world may never know. LOL
I'm also relieved to hear there's at least ONE Vista 64 user out there for whom the game runs well. It gives me renewed hope that I can (one day) actually experience game content that I can't now because of my crashing issues (i.e. teams). It's like paying for a nice meal, but only getting to eat the appetizer and soup.
I won't pester you to post your machine's hardware\software stats - it won't do me much good since I'm most certainly running a totally different setup. Thanks for the tip about tweaking graphics settings though - it's an avenue I haven't pursued in depth yet, so I'll play around with it.
IT seems ATI users may have better luck with not crashing. I don't know why this is other than maybe ATI's newer cards are more properly supported by the game? Or New NVidia cards are supported to run on XP, but if they run on Vista there are other things not happening in the game to allow Vista OS systems with NVidia cards to run right?
I wonder, if we asked how many people who are experiencing a fair amount of crash issues use NVidia and how many use ATI... We or NCSoft could probably figure out the root of this problem...
I myself just built a Vista 64-bit rig about a week or so ago, on which I'm running CoX now:

running Vista Home Premium 64-bit w/ SP2 and Media Center TV Pack 2008, and I cannot report any game-related crashes or even any crashes occurring concurrent with gameplay. Gameplay looks like something out of a documentary, with graphics and audio settings maxed out, and no hardware-related lag or performance issues.
If you'd like any further detail pertaining to game compatibility issues, feel free to PM me directly.

we have 3 vista machines playing CoH; one of them crashes all the time, the other 2 are fine.
One of the fine ones has onboard video.
The one that crashes a lot has Quad core processor and Nvidia Geforce 9600 GTX video card, Asus motherboard... Vista 32... patched the hotfix and then to service pack 2, it happens less often (only every hour or two, not every 10 minutes) but still that's a lot of crashes... very annoying.
The other one that doesn't crash has 9800 video card and dual core and vista 64.
I will open a new thread with the hijack log and so on to see if anyone has suggestions for the one where it won't work right.
Corva,
Could use post all of your graphics settings exactly as they are please and leave absolutely nothing out? I am almost wondering if there is a certain setting that I will need to use to run it properly since I have the exact same graphics card you do. Just a shot in the dark to see if it fixes it.
Thanks
Sure thing, Haxi2,
Sorry I hadn't responded until now, but I didn't realise that posting in a thread here didn't automatically mark it as a "watched" thread. I'll provide you with that info as soon as I get home from work today, if you still need it.

I tried to do this update and it says that the update does not apply to my system
Install SP2 then. It includes the update. Of course, if you already have SP2 that would be why it is giving you that message.
Oh, and if you don't have Vista or Server 2008 it will give you that message as well.

Haxi2,
I sent you a PM on here with the information you requested. Didn't feel I should subject the rest of the thread readers with information only requested by you.

I'm thinking N-Vidia is having issues playing nice with Vista's recent updates. Are people having problems with other games or JUST CoH/CoV?
I suggest running thermal software on your PC to see if you are running hot.

From what I've seen on the nVidia forums, other games are having problems with the drivers as well.
Not necessarily the same problems we have, but problems nonetheless.

I got SP2, no fix here. I got updated drivers for everything and no, reinstalling drivers does NOTHING. So NCSoft/Paragon Studios.. You can't hide behind the "SP2 will fix it!" anymore. Time to man up and fix the game yourself...
