BS/WP: The Arm Strong Approach

My pleasure.

He's been at 50 for a little while now, and I've been running the ITF a bit as a change of pace. Great Task Force. With a decent team, they seem to run about an hour and twenty minutes or so a pop. Truthfully, although exceedingly tough, my BS/WP Scrapper still faceplants occasionally running against +2 foes in the TF. Typically I'll be the first one into the spawn, ahead of the Tanks. That's usually not risky with the Traitors, but starts getting dicey with the Novas and Dwarves in the Cyst mission. Parry helps with the Dwarves' melee attacks, but does nada for the ranged energy and negative energy bolts that the Novas throw out. Those fights seem to be tougher, as you're relying on your Regen and Heightened Senses to carry the day.

Occassionally, I'll also run into a situation where I tackle an ambush solo (usually because the Tanks are slow to turn and address that risk) and miss with the first Parry. That usually opens the door for a cascading Defense failure. Despite Parry, my Defense will drop into the -60% range due to the Def Debuffs and then it's time to pop some greens or a few oranges to stay on my feet.

Overall, though, the build handles the ITF exceedingly well. I can go stark raving Scrapper-suicidal and still stay standing through 90%+ of the encounters. It's a nice feeling to know that you can singlehandedly stonewall an incoming ambush, too. That has a lot of value for the squishies in the back row and is a case where having RttC as a Taunt aura really helps. The stream of incoming enemies hits you, the aura tics on them, and presto! You have your own little swarming fan club of Romans.

I'm still working to fine-tune the end-game build a bit. I'm wrestling with tweaking the build to get into the 2200 Hit Point range without sacrificing some of the nice set bonuses in the build, particularly the +Recharge which is very handy.

Thanks for the feedback, as it's nice to know others are finding it useful.

Ok, first off, I love this build. My eyes kind of glazed over at all the techie-talk, but I got the gist of it, which is the important part. (My brain + technical specs = meltdown, so it's nothing against you, I promise.)

But my question is, how very useful is the Fighting Power Pool? Is Leadership moreso? I'm designing a Katana/WP, which is essentially the same build with a skinnier sword (lol) and I was just wondering what was more useful for a scrapper at higher lvls. Since I don't intend to solo this toon, do the team bonuses of Leadership help keep me alive by keeping my support people alive, or will the lack of extra attacks to put down the people trying to kill me going to, well, kill me?

As a person who HATES crunching numbers (and is lazy) I was just wondering if anyone out there has the data to give me some guidance.

Fighting.

Leadership buffs (apart from Assault, which I do take in my build) are poor for Scrappers. Focus on dealing damage and surviving in the crucible of combat. Tough adds much needed S/L resistance to the build, and Weave is leveraged by Heightened Senses, which is your primary mitigation from Exotic damage types. Layered with the Steadfast Res/Def IO and the small bonus from Combat Jumping, the contribution from Weave is significant. It adds up to about 26.2% Defense to the Exotic damage types. That's not bad, as your massive regen and enhanced hit points take up the slack after that. You're just trying to reduce the amount of incoming damage to something your regen can handle...

Definitely Fighting.

Okay, so working on that premise, and having read that neither Boxing or Kick is particularly "better" as an attack since both force a redraw, is there any reason to take one over the other? In Mids, the description of Boxing states it has a small chance to disorient, and Kick has a small chance to knock down foes. When I look at the raw numbers (dear god, the numbers...) I see 10% chance for Boxing, and 15% chance for Kick for their respective side-effects. Practically speaking, would I notice the extra 5%? Working on unenhanced data, of course, since I don't think I'd waste a slot on stun or knockback, unless it came bundled with something like accuracy.

I would recommend grabbing whichever one catches your attention, removing it from your tray and completely forgetting it exists.

Neither isa great attack, the special effects kick in rarely, and you have a solid attack chain off your sword attacks alone. If you are going Katana, the attacks are quicker, so you have even less need for filler attacks.

Any good set bonuses you can get off either can probably be obtained from sets you can put in other powers, so they're not likely to be worth giving extra slots to.

Ultimately, the only reason you're taking either one is because you HAVE to in order to get the shields. Yes, the shields are good enough (when stacked with a compatible secondary) to be worth "wasting" a power choice on.

If you really, REALLY hate the idea of taking one with the intention of not using it, take Kick, and put Kinetic Crash in it. KC has a variety of nifty set bonuses in it. Just remember that it WILL change the Knockdown to Knockback, so whenever it triggers, remember to hit your bind that says "This. Is. SPARTA!"

Seriously though, don't worry about which you take. It's just filler.

What an amazing guide, I'm going to roll one up right away !

Great write up, will be useful in my end game 'I want to KILL something build. And thanks to Warner for linking me here.

Great guide!

I have a 50 BS/WP on Virtue, Sci-Fi Samurai. He was one of the easiest and most fun characters I leveled to 50th to date. Having WP as a secondary also means that you don't suffer from the usual BS Endurance woes and have a much better defense than a Regen does wihtout the use of power pools.

I agree Slash should only be taken to fill out your attack chain at early levls until Disembowel comes along. The ONLY reason it helps even then, is because it has a Fast recharge rate.

Parry is a mandatory power! Take it! Take it YESTERDAY!

That is all.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to take with my new BS scrapper, and you've answered my question, and then some. Thanks for the great info, and the rockin' breakdowns by levels.

Thanks. Glad it's of use. Still considering a re-tooling to take advantage of the new sets out there.

BS could use more recharge to tighten up the attack chain, so that bears some serious consideration...

Quick comment on Focused Accuracy vs. Tactics. According to Red Tomax (and I believe Mid's) the numbers are:
* Focused Accuracy +5% ToHit +20% Accuray
* Tactics +7% ToHit
Do you know if those are correct? If so, I would consider Tactics to be the better choice due to the to hit calculation mechanic in CoH and even more so considering all the accuracy bonusses available nowadays.

Anyone care to comment on using 5 Doctored Wounds and the Dark Watcher's proc in RttC? This is how I have it slotted in my 49 BS/WP. I'm not sure how to tell if the proc is actually doing anything for me or not. I'm sure it's cheaper than the full Numina set however.

Dude, I have a level 47 BS/WP scrapper (see my Forum Name? Thats him) and I wish I had read this before I made him.

Luckily for me, I pretty much did what you listed above, execpt I took Resurgance......bad idea, I know. I have a respec, so I am getting rid of it.

I agree with the AV killing. BS/WP isn't really the best for that, but it DOES take down EBs well (Soloed the Mender Silos TF on Unyielding). I use Outback as a psuedo-tank when I need to, but when there is a tank in the group, I tend to truely "scrap" with him, and "tidy up the edges" of the mobs, catching runners the Tank can't aggro, defend the squishies, ect. He is by FAR the toon I have the most fun with, no matter what I'm doing

Great Work Mate! Broadsword (or in Outback's case, "Knoife") Willpower Rules!

I just started up a new BS/WP scrapper. She's up to level 22 and I'm having a blast. Thank you for the very, very handy guide!

Very nice guide. BS/WP will be my next scrapper. You are also the reason that I managed to level a tank to 50 and still enjoy playing it. I just love my WM/SD tank and your guide was very helpful there.

Minor nitpicking, Tenebrous Tentacles don't prevent knockdown. In fact that is the great advantage of that power when immobilizing foes and knocking them down, like most Storm/Dark Defenders do.
