MMOART Presents...
Personally, I don't take a deposit at all for just this reason. I won't even accept payment unless someone really insists upon it until I've finished a rough sketch (and had the client "sign off" on it) and am actively working on the piece.
I'd be horrified if I took someone's money and then they got lost in the shuffle or I couldn't get them something for their money within a few weeks at most.
I don't know how fast Jomaro works, or how many pieces he works on at the same time, but it's clearly not working out.
Well it swings both ways. With how tough the economy is, it's still a gamble for an artist to take a commission without upfront money. As someone who's worked in lending, experience and sense dictates that if/when a person has to chose between paying their bills and feeding their family, the family's going to come first. Really, it's up to the artist and the customer to hammer out those details, preferably before any work and money is negotiated. In the end, communication is key. Now the issue with MMOArt is that there is no communication and as such, avenues like the BBB and Paypal are the only option left, unfortunately.

Those people with hard feelings should contact Jomaro and work out a solution or request a refund. Otherwise I don't see many hard feelings around here, amazingly enough the exact opposite. The bottom line is either you choose not to patronize MMOART.com or you do.
Some may want a long detailed explanation of what happened, but if you really get right down to it, the only thing that matters is receiving the artwork or a refund.
Both of which should be arranged in private contact with Jomaro and not bantered about on this forum.
Now then...on with the ARTWORK! YAY!
[/ QUOTE ]
lol this is a great solution actually. Though it's hard to work it out with Jomaro when your the only one talking. Kinda like talking to a wall. Funnily enough this method of bantering about on the forum seems to be the only way to get Jomaro to come out of his shell.
I really wish i had me some magic Alty dust or whatever it is that she uses to get a hold of em. I love the enthusiasm there at the end too.....on with the ARTWORK!! YAY!
ahahaha oh no don't take this as me trying to make everyone be nice , this was definitely a snarky post on my part .
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back at the beginning of this thread we had folks griping about this very thing , then immediately become all sunshine and roses when MMO showed back up .
personally its rather amusing to me at this point . I feel badly for any folks that have outstanding comissions , im sure they will be done ...someday when MMO art gets around to it .
but honestly this has happened what twice now , im not saying cut your looses and walk away but geesh some of you should have known better
<waggles finger at a random forum poster >
yeah you !
Maybe since MA art related missions are so popular currently we should craft one with MMO arts ingame character running about a mission map with money trailing out the back while spamming in local
"Hai guys I know things keep on coming up but this time I really really really mean im gonna get on the art your owed "
ahh well I think i'll be rather smug and amused for the next few days .

Everytime I see this thread come back up I can't decide if I should laugh or cry. Here's the thing, posting complaints about them here is pretty much the equivalent of talking to a wall. Everyone can gather around the wall and talk at it, but that doesn't increase the probablity of the wall responding.
This entire incident is unfortunate. I feel for those that invested funds for works not received. Posting here isn't going to change that. Frankly, I'd prefer it if those whole discussion went away. It doesn't help anyone and can only hurt the art community here.
If just one person commissions me instead of MMOArt, then I'll say it has all been worthwhile.
I think this thread keeps getting churned up because people really, really need a place to vent. Also, it can be informative for those considering to hire MMOArt, or any other artist around here, really.
Which I find totally understandable.
Sadly, I cannot offer any good advice to those who have a situation with MMOArt, other than what's already been said.

Well id happily settle for the mods locking the thread and us not seeing another MMO thread pop up .
I really don't think companies should be using the forums to advertise in the first place espescially if they can't seem to meet their deadlines and seem to leave a trail of disgruntled customers .

I'm different in this regard; I insist on full payment before I even lift a pencil/wacom tablet. Because I've been screwed three times now.
I thought maybe that was a little harsh and I dropped my guard over the holidays. I had a guy contact me to do a piece featuring 3 characters... so I told him I'd go ahead and model the characters in 3D for him to approve before I required payment. This was not my normal method - I was just feeling soft-hearted. I spent 30+ hours modelling the characters. I sent the guy screenshots and... nothing. Never heard back. Several months and emails later and I assume I'll never hear back.
I'm back to my old rules of never lifting a pencil/wacom tablet until I have full payment up front. Don't wanna pay beforehand? That's fine... I got a list of other pieces to make.

I also think there's something very valuable to be learned from this - for any artist who might be considering doing commissions themselves.

Your situation is quite a bit different, though. It's clearly far more involved to do a "rough" of a modelled character than it is for me to just sketch something out.
I don't mind if I were to get ripped off for an hour or two's work. I'd be hella pissed if it were 30 hours.

Yeah, I learned to be aware of my own limits when this happened last time. This is a really sad situation, and I feel bad for everyone involved. MMOArt was a great inspiration to me when I was just starting to discover digital art, and to see it come to this, again.... Looks like rebooting didn't help, so I gues we are in for an operating system reinstallation. Here's hoping they will switch to a stable and more efficient operating system that will make things right.

Yeah i hear ya, it would be nice if this thread were 10 pages back waiting on some awesome art to be posted. It would also be nice if all parties involved would be handling there business in private chats but guess what? This is the ONLY way those of us waiting to hear from MMOart can pull him out.
I guess we could all ignore the one ton gorilla in the room lol. I think i'll just sit back now and wait for the 3rd coming of our savior.....Bah.
I gotta tell ya though, I've been sitting back secretly fuming to myself on this until Superman posted something up and then i had a forum to seek agreement. So i posted up. I guess i should show better restraint in the future. Sorry if i am offending anyone. It's just frustrating as all hell to be in this situation and especially with the recession knowing someone has my money and hasn't held their end of the bargain up.
I'll shut up about it now i promise.
**edit**
One more thing though. I never asked for or wanted a "bailout", I don't think any artist from this forum should try and make the situation easier for MMOart by doing free pieces for the people left out in the cold by MMOart. I think MMOart should just man up and grow some freeaking balls. Communicate whatever is going on. This is a very understanding community of people and if Jomaro was in this thread every week with updates then none of us would care. Is that too much to ask?

Well then I'm all for a 'bailout'. It doesn't have to be a full bailout, it can be limited/targeted to... lets say.. one person, to make it easier on the artists. Think I could help in judging who should be on the bailout recipient list.

I understand folks need to vent. I guess I'm just concerned this thread draws too much negative attention. Yes, there are lessons to be learned here by all sides. I just don't want a bad apple spoiling the whole bunch. I really like this section of the forums, both for oogling art as resource for contacting artists.
I think this thread has some small bit of merit in that it seems like the only thing that can get at least a few people some results... tragic as that is.

I don't think this one thread will destroy the Forum. The lessons and concerns are all equally valid, and the great thing about the people here on this Forum is that we don't rant and rave in every thread
