Eldest son won yet another Student of the Month Award, this one being a free buffet dinner at the Mandarin. Daughter is nagging to go to the next Toronto Anime Con in May, wants to crop her long tresses and dye them fire engine red to match the outfit I'll be forced to make. Middle son is driving me batty lately with his potty mouth and self centeredness.. youngest son is a one toothed butterball full of limitless energy.. I needs a clone.

Sounds like you have a lot of time on your hands there GP!

Congrats on the award!

My eldest daughter (a bit more than 3 and a half) prefers to watch "Wolverine and the X-Men" over the other "age appropriate" shows for her. So she asks who everyone is, and yadda, yadda, yadda. Then a few days ago she asks me out of the blue: "Daddy why does THE Beast not wear shoes?" I'm like "what? Beast??? huh?!??!?!" And then it kicks in! She, without watching the show at that time remembered the show. In any case we had a big conversation about the X-Men and such! I love it!

On another note, the youngest is a two year old. I was driving with her a few days ago.....so instead of Dora on the radio, I decided to put on the "regular" radio. Out of nowhere she tells me that "Lady Gaga (spelling?) is on." I was like whoa.......she knows Lady Gaga sings this song. Once again cue the Keanu Reeves "Whoooooooooaaaa....."

Self centerness.. hhhhmmmmm I been running into that a lot with my little girl.

I worked from home yesterday because she had a temp of 100 degrees. She was good while I was on the phone taking care of work stuff. She did break it in the afternoon and asked to go to daycare. She really wanted to go today, because it was picture day and she has a new dress.

Love the shoes on that outfit. What size feet are those for? Yikes!

The only thing I can see that makes it "a grey area", is the fact that it looks like the mini skirt has shorts underneath. AND those shorts ain't Daisy Dukes!

Don't mom it up too much!

Jack hads a new "girlfriend" Her name is Savannah and she lives a few houses down. She is the same age as he is and, tho not in the same class, they ride the bus together. He isn't interested in doing anything unless she can join in. If he goes out to play, he's not content with just playing with his brothers...he wants to go get her. Seeing how she is the ONLY child on this road I have even a small amount of tolerence for, I'm not all that concerned. I am concerned about her mother. Befor I let him go over her house I made it very clear I wanted to meet her and, while I did not let her know, assess her. She was iffy at best. She is older than I am though age isnt really a factor. She seemed sketchy. She may have just been shy but she didn't keep eye contact with me. She answered some questions I posed readily enough but I got this feeling like she could care less what her kids did why should I be worried about mine? I mean CMON!!

Maybe I'm being a worry wort but I do NOT let them play outside alone w/o supervision of some sort. even If i'm in here on the computer, my chair is facing the window, the window is open and I can hear them if they go to far. They have a boundry they know not to corss and if I cannot hear them I get up to look. She reminded me of those parents that let their 2 yr old run oround outside in a dirty diaper with no adult watching.

Am I being overjudgmental.

No. I don't think you're over reacting at all. That is exactly what I do/did. The world has changed so much since I, and I assume you, were kids. It is so much more dangerous.

I don't think you are over reacting either. It's good that you keep a close eye on your kidlings.. and there are a lot of bad influences ie: some parents let their kids friends play Grand Theft Auto for example..

Speaking of Anime and teenagers.....

My step-daughter gave me a request. She wants to dress up as Temari (from Naturo) for AnimeIowa this year. Her biological father is fairly inept at engineering/construction where I have my own 300+sqft workshop in the basement. The "iron fan" she wants isnt really tough to make, tho id use aluminum for weight purposes, its a question of should I hand a 3 to 4 ft metal fan to a 13yr old. Rounding the edges/removing corners aside, this just has bad idea written all over it...... or am I just being overly paranoid?

I don't think metal weapons are allowed at conventions, you may need to check that cons rules and regulations before beginning. My daughter Ash pointed this out to me when we saw a metal Key sword on Ebay but we found a wooden replica that will suffice.

Yeah, metal weapons are generally a no at cons...cardboard with tin foil is the cheapy replacement.

I don't think it a wise idea to allow them in the first place (Real weapons that is). Last thing you need is a bunch of fans going off on one another over this and that. Sure it's be great to watch on YouTube but man, just stupid all around. Wooden ones as well get a careful eye sometimes as well so be prepared for the just in case.

You sound like an awesome mother, there should be more like you. My street is filled with moms and dads that don't care what their kids do unless it bothers them. I hate 90% of the parents in this community. I live in a small community with a manager (all houses owned by a company) and the thing that really sucks is the manage parties with the ppl that let thier kids run wild. Last week a boy twice my sons size pushed him off his bike and took it. When my older son went out there to get the bike (yes he took it forcefully but did not hurt the boy) the boys mother told the manager my son choked her kid and cussed him out. The manager believed her even though i was the only of the 3 that saw it and we got a warning that if i can't keep my kids under control we could be evicted. WTF? These kind of parents should not even have kids i swear it makes me furious. I'm stuck in a place where everytime my kids go outside they are bullied or blamed for something. We hate it here (of course we didn't know it would be like this when we moved in) and we can't afford to move out either. The community looks great from the outside lol. But we are knee deep is drunken and unfit parents, bad kids and a biased community manager.

I dont' know the character you speak of, so I looked it up for a picture. Would a small plastic fan fit the bill. Like take apart one of the little desk fans and use the plastic fan blade? Cut the fan blade down to like 3 spokes, glue on heavy paper and paint (for handheld size)

Or if you are really crafty and want the bigger size, what about a wire frame and paper mache? Would also be pretty light weight i think and then use a strap to attach to the girls back. Another idea would be to use a lightweight wooden slat frame and attach cloth to the frame and paint on the dots. Good Luck

Oddly enough, AnimeIowa allows metal props, tho they are required to be "peace-bonded" except in photo-op areas.
Making something like this isnt new for me as Ive done commissions for cosplay before, but I tend to be very realistic in my creations. Pretty much, if I wouldn't be proud to show it off, it doesnt leave the shop. So the cardboard and metallic paint just doesnt cut it for me. Granted with commissions, its the end users' issue with conventions as I haven't suited up for a convention in....... 8 years now. So with my step-daughter this is new ground, and im not quite sure where to tread.

Just have fun with her NetMinder. Cyguy took my daughter (his "Step") last year and is taking her again this year. They otherwise stear clear of eachother, so this is the only quality time they ever get. She's bringing a friend so he'll have more fun doing his own thing anyway.

So, Net, they allow metal props? Wacky!

From personal dress-up experience, I'd see if she intends to use it for just a few major events (costume contests, whatever) or if she would be hauling it around all the time. If the latter, make sure she knows the weight and size of it, she'll think it's no big deal. It will eventually become a big deal. Therefore, make sure you've got a nearby plan for ditching the fan...hotel room, car, whatever.
