Slight footnote here: Im not taking her to an Anime Convention, her biological father is. Thats not to say I wouldnt take her to GenCon, but I have my standards. I certainly never attended any convention as a kid because my parents were poor. (First Con I went to was GenCon and that was because I won a spot in a Nationals tourney and was paid $250 stipend to go. I came out ahead actually because of some really wierd luck @ the hotel).

Anyways, I appreciate the input. The con in question isnt for several months, so I have some time to decide what to do.

<---- Been to a lot of cons, but only 1 in the past 15 years.

With that, I would pick the convention carefully. The bigger cons such as ComicCon and Gencon can be daunting with all the people. But they are doing a much better job at trying to separate people and make it "seem" less crowded. Also security is much more sophisticated that it was years ago, although it is still mostly volunteers. If you think her bioDad is responsible, then I wouldn't worry too much.

I really want to take my son to one. I'm hoping at some point we could make it be a family thing <hint> as I know my lil girl would love it too. I don't know where to even find out when they are commin around though.

Cons are a blast, big, small, in-between... all the same. Youll get out what you put in. If you stay to yourself and shuffle around, expect to be lonely. Go to panels, speak up, play games youve never even heard before, or some that you have, and youll meet loads of people. Dress up, pose for pictures, let the inner geek shine with pride. Afterwards, disavow all knowledge about throwing produce off the roof, putting vasaline on the handles of the bathroom, and spending $100 to have your friends locked in the Klingon jail.

Not that I have done any of that... and the pictures are fuzzy, that could be anyone. =P

Interesting Fun Fact:
I appear in the 2005 GenCon book. Last day of the con in 2004 I got my picture taken with the WizKids crew (I was working as an Envoy) and I didnt make it 20ft into the con before a friend ran up showing me the pic.

Ya never realize how much hockey gear you have until you have to get all packed up.
Not including old/emergency spare gear (which comprises 2-3 full sets):
Goalie Gear - full set (2 sets of skates, one for me, one for wife)
Wife's gear
My gear
Son's gear
Step daughters gear.

Ugh. 5 full sets of gear, and it all got used this weekend. (and my basement really stinks right now. Not enough Fabreeze in the world)
Between 7pm Friday and 9pm Sunday-
Me - 3 games + 1 practice (1 goal, 3 assists, 1 game in net)
Wife - 2 games + 1 practice (0 points, 1 game in net)
Son - 4 games + 1 practice (2 goals)
Daughter - 1 game (0 points)

On the upside, my son got his first goal in a tournament. 2 actually, and his team got first place. Extra woot! Watching mini-mites (ages 4-6) is just hysterical. Everyone had a blast all weekend long. Bodies everywhere on the ice, the swarm of kids following the puck, and one really bored ref. And one really proud father *grin*.

That's so cool Netminder!! You actually got me grinning here.

As for the stinky sports gear.. try airing it out on the next warm day.. then febreeze again.. spot scrubbing it with a bit of baking soda and vineger will also help deodorize and clean it.

Had a Bowling party for my eldest boy. He got a Wii and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. He also split my old loveseat in two. Love having boys.

Aside from goalie leg armor, everything is washable for hockey.... you just need a really big machine. Personally we use the hot tub in the master basthroom. The jets work like a washing machine for pushing water/soap around. And the water is pretty dark afterwards. Then comes the 12-24 hour drying period because, again, while they are machine safe, you need a good sized machine that you dont like to have all that armor bouncing around in it.

And unlike baseball, hockey helmets are personal gear. Think about that your kid puts on one of the communal helmets in the average baseball league. *ewwww* There have been more that 1 head lice outbreak from batting helmets in recent memory.

ewwww is right. That's why we own our own helmets and gave league helmets to each player who doesn't have their own to return at the end of the season. (And washing in the hot tub somehow reminded me of Granny washing laundry on the kitchen stove.)

He made it further in life than I did before needing the specs...I was in 2nd grade. Happy B-day to the first-born son.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

I was in 2nd grade too...the school recommended an eye exam, I got glasses, and the next day the teacher called home to ask my parents if they knew I'd taken a pair of glasses to school.

Oldest is having his Bar Mitzvah next weekend. Had his last "official" practice last night and he did so well on the first part the Rabbi didn't need to hear the rest.

Now we need to get the house ready for company arriving tomorrow night. Let's see: Disneyland is that way, Sea World is over here, the Zoo is that way. Just have to figure out what to do for the rest of the days.
