This is a nice and mature reaction to some honest (if hard hitting) questions.
You have just proved as intolerant as the person that complained about the NSFW picture.

I don't think people are upset about the mods taking action and doing their jobs. I think folks are more so taking issue with people coming to this forum (a forum that they don't normally frequent) to create controversy over stuff that has not been a problem in the past.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yet what I see is a new moderator who has become attracted to this section has found stuff that previous mods (most of whom did not regularly post here) finding stuff that likely would have gotten whole threads deleted in the past. Instead of doing that Niviene just edited out the one link leaving the thread otherwise alone.
I still think people are overreacting to this.
Edit:
Oh, and for the record, I personally would love to have artists be able to use a NSFW tag to post links to their artwork. I think it is an entirely sensible practice. Sadly, I don't think these forums can do an age check.
Maybe this is something the art community can ask the Community Reps to see if new forum software could implement something that would help. Like maybe mature sections of the forums.

That's the thing though, as long as it's through DeviantArt then it's already being age checked as best as the internet can do without getting way too much personal information.

luckily im not here to debate im here to see art and chat with fellow artists and collectors and really have no intrest in what someone whom just wanders in to debate has to say.
so yeah long winded debates full of sound and fury where im forced to listen to someones oponions and how they affect me ? nah thats what ignore is for .

For folks that are interested, I've been trying to get the Creative Works forum over on the ol' Comics Haven boards a little more active, but I'm only one (amazing) man and need more posters to help out!

We still can't post nudity over there, either. Unless we post it in the "Adult" section that isn't really intended to be for adult art (although there are a couple of threads which have popped up).

There's no rule against posting links with an NSFW tag there, though.
Plus, the Inferno if people want to post images directly.

Meh, I'm none too fond of the ignore feature. The little bit of OCD in me likes to see how a conversation progresses (good and bad) and finds "*** You are ignoring this user *** " a bit irritating. As I said before, it's probably a side-effect of the crazy pills they make us take over on the Justice forum...
Also (correct me if I'm wrong), but wasn't this thread created to discuss and/or debate the "controversy?"
I refuse to use the ignore feature, just as I refuse to tolerate any other type of censorship. Like Manoa, I prefer to see how threads play out, keeping an open mind to both sides of a debate. Occasionally, a thread even changes my stance on issues. I enjoy that.
Yeah. I think the issue is not the mod-smack, no one really minds that I don't think. We know when we post such items the chance of a mod-smack is there and we are all fine with it.
The issue was someone or someones coming on and going all crazy that oh this shouldn't be here and what about the kids and all that. And others are all, well the site the pic was posted on does have filters and it was labelled NSFW so if you are offended then don't click, no one forcing you!
And then it turned into a big ignore fest or something I dunno! I don't like ignore people unless they are spamming me and that's only in game or if they are harassing. If someone is disagreeing on a forum then I'm not gonna ignore them. I am like DJ there I like to see the debate and if someone can change my mind by presenting a good argument, then cool. But be prepared because I argue back!
My problem with the "don't click, no one is forcing you" doesn't make it any less against the forum rules.
I understand how you feel. This is the art section, it is where I see some of the most amazing and talented members of this community come together. I love this section however this section is still part of the forums. The rules that are in place are for the entire forum.
You all know if you post something like this, you run the risk of it being removed.
It's simple...
Keep it clean or it may get removed. No amount of "NSFW" warnings or "this is art" will save it.
Thank you, Niviene, for a clear and reasoned response.

Well yeah, but what I mean if it IS something that is deemed mod-acceptable but still NSFW (yeah I have a hard time thinking a scenario for this either. maybe a reeeeally skimpy bikini or something?), then yeah no one is forcing someone to click, that's all I'm saying
Me I probably wouldn't post something I knew was against the rules, I'd just post it on my DA page or something.
If a link isn't marked NSFW but is age-verified on the other end, is it still a NSFW link?

[/ QUOTE ]
I'd argue yes...and in my opinion is even more risky for some folks. For example, a risque piece is posted on DA...DA is age-verified, so everything's kosher, right? Not really, because the image is still an "adult" image...and if I click on the link while at work and I just so happen to be logged into my DA account, I could be in a lot of hot water with my bosses for viewing risque images on my work computer. It's "not safe for work" in it's most literal meaning.

I could never get behind the "no one is forcing you" argument. I think the question still remains as to whether or not it's okay to post a link to a NSFW work if the work is "tasteful" and the site that is hosting said image has some sort of age-verification (which it seems hasn't been as much of a issue in the past). That's one of those hazy gray areas that I think some folks would appreciate clarification on.
Thus the difference between age-verification and NSFW.
Age verification just asks you to prove (once!) that you're old enough to view the content.
NSFW says "we don't care how old or mature you are, if you click on this link you will see something that others might find offensive, disturbing, in poor taste, or otherwise inappropriate."
That's all, really.

It's like.... maybe I find some religions offensive to me. But y'know what, that's fine, people can go do what they want. But when you come to my HOUSE and try to 'convert' me, that's when I get upset and angry.
If people wanna go do that whatever, I've no problem with that. But you keep me out of it!
I like the idea that Alex is opperating on and already mentioned.
Just say there's new artwork at such and such a location and once they get there you can put NSFW warnings all over it.
This method has even gotten the mod stamp of approval.

Exactly, although if you had a chance to jump on Age of Conan to check out the RP-PVP server, it was kinda sad to see most of characters encountered tended to be loin cloth wearing barbarians, or topless women wearing very little else. And yes, they had nipples. Then again that is an 18+ game for adults.... err... yeah.

Heh, I haven't "just wandered into this section". I've been here for a while. I still check this section almost as much as the other sections of the forums, and even more than I look at either the City Life or my "home" server section.

That was what I thought.
As much as I hate censorship, I firmly believe in responsible free speech.
Part of that responsibility includes following the forum guidelines when posting links. If we ignore the guidelines, we set aside structure for whim. At what point does the forum descend into anarchy? At what point do we regret allowing unrestricted freedom?
Before everyone forgets, this section is not the artist/collector's community alone as some would suggest. It also is for screenshots, and for anyone else who has paid their monthly fee for the game.
This section, where people [u]should have[u] the most open minds being artists, seems to instead have the most closed minds of any of these forums. I am repeatedly astounded at just how down right [u]hostile[u] people in this section are to those that come in here. I have said this in the past and will probably say it again.
Some people that frequent this section need lessons in manners.

However, it does seem to be a bit self-serving to object to the moderator action on a public, teen-rated game forum. Part of using these forums is agreeing to follow the forum rules/guidelines, yet now people are upset/shocked that the rules are enforced?
How about people post constructively (and only seen one post so far that did this) on how to continue to let people know about their artwork while keeping in the forum guidelines. The other thread seems filled with a bit too much sarcasm to take as a constructive suggestion.
I know the community reps and mods are looking into the guidelines, but until the self-righteous anger gives way I doubt anything would convince them that there might have been another way to deal with similar posts.
