Are other live entities as pedestrians, animals etc OK?
Are vehicles and effects like explosions OK?
What the heck was the Cloverfield monster anyway?

Aye, there can be people... but they really can't stand out. Pedestrians in an architectual drawing at best.
Explosions, storms, sunsets... they're all good.

I know that personally, this one is going to be the toughest for me.

I just plan to taunt and tease up in this here thread until a day or two before the deadline... No point in tipping my hand too early and letting the competition know what they're up against, while at the same time being able to see the early entries so that I do know what I have to compete with.

Bumpage for a reminder
Haven't forgotten but I'm away on a business trip so I thought that this month I'll just describe my masterpiece:
'Imagine if you will a sunrise over Sharkhead Isle. The Hell Forge stand out as a hazy silouette to the right. A sprawl of rooftops make their way towards the harbor in the foreground chased by the orange pipes of doom. Potter's Field can be made out in the distance to the left. Vapor trails in the air and a lone explosion among the catwalks tells us Sky Raiders and Demolitionists are both early risers. The piece is painted in oil 2,5m x 1m" in muted, earthy pallet"
I'm very satisfied how this turned out. There are a few surprises in the picture also for those that look closely!
I'm surprised how much resistance there is to backgrounds. Juggy, this is an EXCELLENT challenge, and one I wish I was a part of.
IMO, the background can make or break a piece. That's where you get your lighting (sunset? Mid day?), your backstory (King's Row? Talos? Altas?), your supporting cast (Skulls?), and minor details that can really bring life into a piece (trash, grafitti, dumpsters, arrested bodies).
If I were teaching, this would be a full topic of it's own.
don't mean to further threadjack, but I wanted to add to DJ's comments.
Backgrounds can really set a tone for a piece. Like Morgenstern's recent piece with the Malta, it still would have been good with an assortment of gunslingers around but the Titan in the background made it more eye catching.
Juggy's background stormy cityscape behind Heri and Wherl added a nice environment for them to be immersed in, instead of just them fussing with each other.

March Fan Art Battle: The Battle of the Backgrounds
Overview: Yup, you read it right. This will be a battle of who can do up the most inspiring, city of something-like, background. For many artists this is their bane... and for some, it's simply neglected. Well, there's no hiding from it now!
Rules: Ok, this one is fairly open to interpretation. You can have a city-scape, a back alley, a SG HQ, park, heck... you can even have a bedroom.
What you can't have in it is a hero... or villain for that matter. This is all about the Background. Try to make it as recognizable from the game (or from a storyline) as possible.
*feel free to use this BG in a later piece. This contest is about improving ourselves... so no worries there.
**The list is getting smaller and smaller for these challenges, but just because you're not on it, doesn't mean you can't throw down. Anyone not competing is welcome to join in... it's just that your piece won't be included in the vote in the end.
***If you thought the last round's elimination was brutal... wait until the end of this month.
