Discussion: Double XP Finishes Up!
W00T! 1st after LH!!
I had a lot of Dub-XP fun, spent most of it side-kicking friends and random heroes in Freedom.
CoH ROCKS!!
This Dub-XP was weekend better than the last twono server crashes.

I got a kick out of UnSub's post. I think it wrapped up my own thought summarily.
However, as painful as Freedom (and to a lesser extent, Virtue) was for some people, I think the benefits for the rest of the community, as well as the good press (this is certainly NOT a dead game, thank you very much! ) outweighed one or two servers being locked down (because they broke their record number of concurrent users nonetheless!).
Lessons learned aside, I know Triumph had a great time this weekend, whether it was running Katies or running story arcs and other TFs. Or even helping your friend get a lvl 50 villains by running Serpent Drummer missions on your lvl 50 hero
Now where's our City Vault?
Here's to another year of CoH/ CoV goodness/ evilness
Yes, UnSubs top ten was brilliant.
Even the grey-pin-striped suits in the market had fun during the weekend.
and FreeNumb's boards had Dub-XP drama too (I had to check several times to ensure I wasn't in Virtue's drama section)

Suggestions for future 2xXP Weekends:
- [u]More advanced warning of the server cap[u]. Actually, this is already accomplised since the policy is announced and the next 2xXPWE is months away. But it would be nice to have about a week's notice for the weekend combined with the warning about the server cap. This would then be a reminder to transfer a toon or roll a new one on a less populated server, or, bear the consequences.
- [u]Free transfers off of any server that had hit the cap this weekend[u] (that would be Freedom *and* Virtue, so far). Even if the free move is only available for a week before the next 2xXPWE.
- [u]Enable server transfer outside of server selection[u]. Many who would have paid $10 to move a toon off of a locked server couldn't do so, because you had to log into the server first.
- [u]A queuing mechanism for cap-locked servers[u]. All this backing out of the login screen and back in is tedious. OR, the ability to refresh the server listing without having to back out and reload it to see if a server has freed up, perhaps even done automatically once a minute.
- [u]An AFK time-out for toons in bases and on TFs[u]. No one has any valid reason to be AFK for more an hour (that I can think of). Make it an hour. Long enough to satisfy people who need to attend urgent RL tasks, but not too long that people can 'park' their toon indefinitely. It's either this or jiggle the server on-and-off when the cap is about to be reached to knock off all the 'parkers' and see how many log back in. Obviously, the former option is the better. Perhaps this AFK timer for TFs and bases can be turned on only during 2xXPWEs?
- [u]Continue to discourage RMT[u]. Although I personally doubt there are that many that are making a significant contribution to the problem, they should still be discouraged. While kicking them for in-game solicitation is always wonderful, perhaps it's time to start hitting them on another front: farming. Game mechanics should be altered to discourage the farming techniques that make RMT attractive and worth their while monetarily.

I don't agree with most of the "nerf-farm threads", because any change would negatively impact other player, and just move the gold-farm crowd into PI radio missions or some other area.

I got home at 1pm Monday. With only 2 hours to go until the servers were shut down for maintenence I logged onto my level 43 Invuln/Em Tank on Freedom. I was almost exactly halfway to level 44. I was going to just solo until the servers went down, but I got a team invite just a few minutes after logging on.
We had a full team and we were running scanner missions in Peregrine Island on Unyielding. The team leader was a level 44 Invuln/SS Tank. It was a good team, and we were all moving quickly, trying to squeeze out as much of the last little bit of Double XP that we could.
Then came the announcement that the servers would shut down in 30 minutes.
At that point I had almost exactly 1 bub to go til level 44. The whole team started moving even faster. The leader would engage one group of enemies and I'd leapfrog him and engage another. Taunting and holding them in place while waiting for the team to show. I'd see the leader run past me and then a few seconds later the rest of the team would show up and quickly AoE the mobs that I was holding. We did two more missions like that.
Then came the announcement that the servers would shut down in 10 minutes.
We started moving even faster as we had gotten used to each others style and moves. Myself and the leader would leave the spawn before they were all dead, when there was just a few enemies left and we knew the team could handle the aggro. He and I started pulling one spawn into another, so that each of us would hold two full spawns while waiting for the team to show up and wipe them out.
Then came the announcement that the servers would shut down in 5 minutes.
I noticed that I needed about 1/5 of a bub to level, and I really wanted to hit it before the servers went down. The whole team was moving so fast that it was hard to see what was happening half the time. In the almost two hours I'd played with them we had only a couple of deaths at the start but now we were mowing the enemies down like a well-oiled machine of destruction. This despite our being on Unyielding and the leader being one, two or even three levels above the rest of the team.
A few minutes after the announcement I hit Unstoppable and ran into one of those council rooms of death. Normally I don't like herding, but since I knew the rest of the team was about a minute behind me I decided now was the perfect time. I ran around aggroing the entire room, and got them to follow me toward the entrance. Right as I got there the team rounded the corner and began unloading on the enemies. The leader also stopped and did his best to hold as much aggro as he could as well.
Then it happened. Level up! I had just enough time to type; "YES!!!" into team chat and then Unstoppable started blinking. My cursor hovered over Archmage but before I could click it I was forcibly disconnected from the server.
A lot of people in a lot of threads have made a lot of complaints about 2XP weekend. I just wanted to share this because it was easily the most exciting two hours I've ever had online. As in EVER! Sure there were times I couldn't log onto my Freedom characters, so I just played one of my characters on Protector. Yeah, a couple of times I was on Freedom and Virtue the lag was noticible, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I've seen in the past. It was nothing like 2XP weekends before which were often nearly as bad as a Rikti zone invasion or a Mothership raid.
So thank you NCSoft. You have at least one customer who enjoyed 2XP weekend.
All I can say is that I was amazed to see 950+ (unhidden) players on Triumph's hero-side. That's just crazy.
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

This is a good idea.

Funny, I've been asking for this for well over a year now. People get mad at me every time for suggesting it.

Wow what a great weekend. I had way too much fun... put off my homework ALL WEEKEND... I wanna thank all the Devs, and the whole City of * team for keeping the servers running smooth. One time, I couldn't get on Freedom (Sat. afternoon) but I just played another one for like twenty minutes and got on.
Nice job team.
Thanks to 2xp weekend, I finally have my first (and probably only) level 50 Villain. Without it, I doubt I'd have ever quite motivated myself to get him through the 30s. Had a couple of absolutely awesome LGTFs along the way, as well.
At the risk of derailing the discussion, I'd like to call out the Ouroboring clicky-mission as an especially egregious kind of suck. Not because I get all worked up over exploits (I don't). Not because I have any objections to PLing (I don't). Because while playing my vil, I kept checking my global friends, seeing them in RWZ, and thinking "sweet, I can hook up with the SG and run war zone missions" ... only to find out that yeah, they're still running that stupid OB thing on the hero side. Again. All day. All weekend. It made 2xp weekend a surprisingly non-social event for me, compared to past iterations.
I have mixed feelings about the effects big events always have on the market. On one hand, it's nice to get 2x or 3x my usual price for IOs. On the other, the resulting bloat in common tech bits versus the shortage of common magic bits is just ... bizarre. Haven't we all adjusted to a world where you need to fight magic mobs sometimes? Months later, it seems that no ... collectively we haven't.
Please try MA arc ID 351455, "Shard Stories: Scavenger's Hunt." Originally created for the Dr. Aeon contest, it explores the wild potential of one of the City's most concept-rich but content-poor settings: the Shadow Shard.
I'm flattered to have my post be mentioned, although I've had some people go "Pffft... 40 hours is NOTHING!" For some, it might be nothing, but for me, it's a lot. It's almost as many hours as I am old in years... almost.
My double xp weekend stands as a testament to willpower, caffeine, and homemade chocolate chip cookies. Without them (especially the cookies), I wouldn't have made it.
I got my Peacebringer from 43 to 48, almost to 49.
I got my FF/Rad def from 12 to 19, almost to 20.
I got my Fire/Kin troller from 11 to 18, almost to 19.
I got a level on my SS/Inv brute, and a solid helping of debt too.
I ran a LGTF, played on a farm, and did more police-band missions than I've ever done in one sitting.
I also got to be there when a good friend hit 50 on her latest character!
In short, it was a great weekend.
Man I soo loved DBL XP Weekend, I only had one delema- Which SG Gets the Luvin on which days of the weekend?!?
Well I sort of solved that delema, by keeping my sunday commitment on Infinity, while bouncing btwn red & blue side on Guardian. I had some Awsome times , though burnout seemed to have hit my HG mates on Infinity by the time Sunday rolled around. You don't want to know the challenges I went through juggling RL demands with much desired DBL XP Goodiness, but I managed, even with the Baby trying to play my toons for me at the times when Mama's lap was the Only place she wanted to be, lol!
Now please pardon me while I try to scrub the last of the milk drool off of my poor keyboard. Uht ohh Slobber Bucket wants to play again!!
Confusion is Lord & Chaos is my Best Friend!! Shall I introduce you??
MArc# 5232 Bastet's Unleashing *a Solo-able arc*
Gae'Atha- lvl 50 Emp/Ele/Psi Def
Sekmet's Fel Blood- lvl 50 Rad/Ther/GW Corr
And that record number of players on the server would be.... Come on! Real numbers are out, get in the spirit and tell us! I promise we won't tell the Blizzard guys just to make them jealous.

I deliberately haven't looked, but I suspect an equal amount of both will be the ultimate answer.
I wound up just feeding my altaholism. Hit all the milestones I set for myself, though: got my corruptor to 30 and her auras, got my stalker to 40 and over the level 39 wall, and got my new mastermind to 24, within spitting distance of the Commando. I wanted to work on my poor level stuck-at-42 tanker, but I only had so much time to devote to the game.
Levelling up my lowbie MM is even better now that the new patch has finally gone live and my Acid Mortar will quit betraying me (Achilles Heel proc).
Arc #41077 - The Men of State
Arc #48845 - Operation: Dirty Snowball
I know the devs don't really like leaking datamined info, but:
How many levels, total, were gained?
Please use this thread to discuss the below announcement:
Over the weekend of February 8th through the 10th the City of Heroes and City of Villains servers saw some record numbers of recent concurrent players as super heroes and super villains logged on to enjoy the exciting times of Double XP! Characters playing during this weekend reaped the rewards of advancing their characters at twice the normal speed! While there were some issues of overcrowding that plagued the Freedom server, overall, a lot of fun was had by all!
When we look at the message forums, we see a lot of ensuing discussion about the weekend. Mindscythe, in his thread Thank you for the weekend, talks about his 40 hour marathon play session. UnSub ponders the Top Ten Things the Double XP Weekend Achieved. Other posters deal more with the joys of extended gaming play sessions and our City of Heroes gamers prove they are no different than others. In the thread Double XP Accomplishments! _Shadow_ remarks that he accomplished Eating Cheerios at 1:22 AM and Doomlord goes on to regale his creative side by making sculptures out of the pile of Mountain Dew cans filling my desk while waiting for people to zone.
We want to thank everyone for making this Double XP weekend so memorable! We are certainly looking forward to the next one, later this year!
