I thought I heard somewhere that the answer was 'no' but I could be very wrong. I'll be updating to 10.4 myself as soon as I can manage it regardless. Just waiting for the real deal to drop for x64. Well, that and it being time to go home.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Well whoever finds out first, let us all know. Inquiring minds and all that...

I honestly have no clue, Bill. I'm still using the 10.4 preview, and only found out about the 10.4a preview a short time ago. Nothing is specifically mentioned about CoH in any documentation, though. All I do know is that the actual driver is newer than what will be in the WHQL package. I don't plan on upgrading today, but if you do, let us know if the FSAA/AO problem is fixed. I have my doubts, but you never know.

So the 10.4a preview is newer/more advanced than the drivers that release today? That seems kinda silly...

Black, the 10.4a preview includes drivers for x64 versions of xp, vista, and win7. The only thing that non-WHQL ATI driver packages usually don't include are Mobility drivers for laptops, since a little work has to be done to optimize them. But unless the FSAA/AO problem is indeed resolved in these or you experience one of the problems in other games that these fix, you're perfectly fine waiting for the official release.

Blame Microsoft. If ATI had their way, they wouldn't even bother with the WHQL process (releasing preview and hotfix drivers side-steps WHQL as it is), as all it does is basically give programs their stamp of approval that your machine won't blow up if you use them ... which any software from a reputable source shouldn't do anyways, these days. This means that any subsequent fixes or improvements must either be put off unti you're ready to compile the next WHQL version, or you release them without the WHQL testing.

As do I due to this post from Tex.

He seems to be implying that the AO/FSAA problem is not ATI specific.

Negative. AO and FSAA still hate each other. AO disabled.

Yes, I know. Read up a little bit -- I make mention of it. I posted the WHQL link for those who would rather have an "official" version, and for those players using laptops who would like to upgrade anyways (Ultra Mode or not). And really, unless you're looking to squeeze every fps out of the game and hope that the preview drivers will give increased performance over the release version, or play one of the other games that the preview drivers provide fixes for, there's not much difference to CoH players WHICH version of the 10.4 drivers they choose.

Don't quote me on this, but I thought that Shader went N/A as soon as you turned on any Ultra mode item because Ultra settings require the max Shader Quality to function.

Is it even worth trying these out? The last few installs, my drivers never changed from 8.whatever. I have the Radeon 9800, and it just pulls the same driver from the CCC every time. Four different upgrade attempts, I'm tired of trying.

The number displayed in the CCC that you're looking at is the packaging version not the Catalyst version.

Posting because the 10.4 release drivers have finally fixed my inability to alt+tab properly.

I'll quote you on it. That's exactly correct.

I mean when I click on driver information in my device manager.

It's still the case, device manager will show you the packaging version. For example the 10.4's show as 8.723 in there, they are still 10.4's though.

If you're having problems then just uninstall the old drivers, run CCleaner, reboot and install the new ones.

Laptop Video Card or Frame Rate Issues

Some laptop video cards (ATI Mobility, Intel 91x Chipsets) are having known issues with frame rates and other visual degradations to gameplay.

This TEMPORARY addition to your COH shortcut will force the game to render in a simpler rendering path, and should clear up some of the more serious performance issues until a more permanent solution is found.

Modify your City of Heroes shortcut (by right-clicking and choosing Properties) to include "-useTexEnvCombine"] (without the quotes) at the end of the 'Target:' line, so it should look something like this:

"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -useTexEnvCombine

[/ QUOTE ]

That will force the game into a simpler rendering technique and should help some.

The Xpress 200 is not a gaming quality card. It's barely an Outlook quality card. New or not.

With the settings I have laid out in the OP, here's what I'd change:

In the CCC: Disable FSAA, AF, Triple Buffering and Vertical Sync.

In game: Disable Water, Bloom, Depth of Field, FSAA, AF.

Test to see whether disabling Geometry Buffers makes any difference.

Apologies for not being able to give you more help than that.
Like Maf, I'm stuck with a X200. The change to the shortcut has allowed me to actually play the game now. Thank you, Bill.

I'm very angry about this whole thing, though. Yippee! It's a new issue and now my onscreen graphics are worse then ever before. And the worst part is that there was no warning. I mean, come ON. This had to come up in beta testing but did NCSoft warn us about it? Was there an email notice or something on the COH website's homepage saying, "Hey, you're going to need a fix to play?" Oh, Hell no. Pretty damn lousy customer service, NCSoft.

Update: My performance in Mercy is horrible. I just yanked the 10.4a drivers and I'm loading the official 10.4s.

I'm also looking into the OpenGL preview driver.

Bill, Mercy causing terrible performance isn't driver-related. It's just how the zone was constructed, and how that construction interacts with Ultra Mode. It's the only zone redside where my FPS stays below 30 (and frequently, below 20), and it's done that for the entirety of beta.

I came to this thread because post patch it does look like my ATI CCC is able to control AA any longer for the game, and apparantly this is so. Go thread go.

Sadly, I can't update my drivers. Have never been able to. I can't uninstall them using add/remove programs... just gives me an error message. Even in safe mode.
