Discussion: Comic Book Creator Winners

Agreed on The Stuff of Dreams. Best CoX comic I've read, period. I was absolutely certain it would win first place. Shows what I know.

My second favorite was the hilarious Adventures of Johnny Rapid. I had tears in my eyes from laughter, the first time I saw it.

As for my own comic (linked in .sig), I keep telling myself there was an e-mail problem. I was one of the folks who never received a confirmation letter.

Edit: Pssst! Bagheera! You linked to the cover of Stuff of Dreams, and not the full comic.

Hi Folks! ^_^

First off, congrats to the contest winners.

Semi-related question - I'd posted my comic contest entry on the Hypercomics website near the back 1/3 of the contest, and I was wondering if anyone knew how the HC website rates comics. The reason I ask is that from 1-70 views, my comic had a 4-star rating. After view 71, suddenly it was three stars. What the hell? Anybody know how that works? o_O?

Anyhow, I also did an end run around the Comic Creator software and created my own PDF file. Interested folks can find it here:

Comments still welcomed. ^_^

Later all!

I updated my CBC entry (link in sig) with some info to some frequently asked questions I keep getting hammered with in various places.

Thanks again to all those that liked it.

Unfortunately, the CBC demo I downloaded expired before the final end of the contest, and I'm unable to post it as a pdf (plus a final error that prevented me from submitting it as a PDF in any event). Once I get my winnings, I'll make sure I post an updated link directly to the pdf. Many of the fonts and shots look terrible in the CBC, so I'm hoping that a high-quality PDF might look a ton better to everyone.

Congrats to all, and I'm really anxious to see who the runners up were, because there's a few of my favs that didn't win either.

Well, you couldn't export it to a PDF with only the trial version of CBC anyway, which was the source of some confusion during the contest period. I don't think it was an "error" exactly; just an option not available without the full version.

I was also hoping for an award for Tales of Paragon. That exuded heroism with a capital H, and was a classy, well-told origin story with heart (also capital H).

Thanks, Bagheera. I appreciate that. As I uploaded mine in the last minutes of the contest and then ended up with a couple funky text boxes, I was pretty sure I wouldn't win. Not that messed up text boxes should instantly disqualify you but I knew there would be some great work that wouldn't have these issues. All three of the winners have better stories than mine and had great production value...I'm just annoyed that I didn't get out a more professional looking product.

I got a heck of a lot of views though and some nice feedback (though I would have liked more) so I'm pretty happy overall. I don't know...maybe I was in the running but it's a little hard to believe considering what was out there. I'm just glad that some people got what I was going for with it. I just wanted to tell a small, simple story and its nice that some people liked it.

I have to agree that The Stuff of Dreams was a darn good read that had to be in the top 4. Everyone should check it out when you get the chance.

Sparky, I can pretty safely say "The Stuff of Dreams" was overall my favorite comic. Then again, I'm a sucker for the "imagination" angle. Specifically, I loved the comic writing and the 'global theme' that I figured could appeal to anyone that played the game.

Now, hand me my nerf bat

DevilsRope, work's got me swamped right now, but when I get some free time again I'm thinking of putting together an issue 2 and 3. (There's just too much left in the part of the story to cram into one more). The cool thing I guess, is that I already have a pretty solid map as to what happens. I had the backstory on 8Baller, Jaden and 8Brawler figured out when I created 8Brawler. It was just a lot of fun to work out the details and put it together in comic form.

Gratz to the winners, I found all the stories entertaining. I would also offer congratulations to everyone else that worked so much and took time to share their work with the rest of us. You all are a part of what makes websurfing fun
I didn't expect my own entry to win but at least bring a smile or a giggle to a few people.
I found that it could be tough to tell a story with such limited space (still working on an unpublished comic that has reached 18 pages just leading to part 2).
I think it would be nice to have an area in the forums to list the works that may still be coming from others who enjoyed this contest as much as I did.
I think as people have more time and experience working with the available tools, we could see some amazing stuff.

Maybe it's a dumb idea but I had it anyway.
How about adding a Comic's store somewhere within Paragon City. The walls could be decorated with cover art from winners and other notable mentions.
Just an idea.

It would be a neat effect- could just be a sidewalk magazine stand.

I like this, too. If the full comic store or sidewalk stand is too much work, perhaps one of the titles could be used on the movie marquees around the city. Everyone in Paragon City has probably seen The Broken Column at least 50 times by now. No wonder those theaters look run-down.

Returning to the contest, here's a question for the winners and anyone else who cares to answer. Did you use demoedits to create all your screenshots, or were some taken from actual gameplay?

I used a variety of things. It got a little tricky since all the characters featured are on the same account. Most of the images were straight screenshots, hundreds of them. Other shots required demorecord so I could do a character swap or even change the time if day for the lighting I was looking for. But since demorecord was broken on the live servers during the contest, I had to copy most of the characters to the test server so I could demo record there. And of course all the 'group shots', we're set up with demorecord as were the shots with the portal and the Arachnos air ships.

It was pretty interesting because I'd never played around with demorecord before.

Photoshop would have been easier and quicker, but I wanted to stay more 'true' to the contest.

Every screenshot used in my comic came straight from the game with 2 exceptions:

The cover - I "photoshop-ped" my character from one screenshot into the screenshot I used for the background.

The last page- which is a full page SG team shot. Most of us were in the shot when it was taken but we did a demorecord and added 5 or 6 members who could not make it for the photoshoot.

Well, gang- this thread has sure cooled down in the month+ since the contest ended. I wonder if the mods are still going to give us their picks.

I don't know if this was suggested before, but it would be really cool if we had a part of the forum just for player created comics. Then everyone could hype their work and comment on others. That being said, I may as well hype the fact that my book- Neighborhood Watch #8 is out today over at www.theneighborhoodwatch.net.

I hope some folks are still out there tooling away on their own creations and comics. It would be cool to see the COH Community continue that spark that this contest brought out.

Hey, this is 8baller. I'm posting here because I'm not sure what else to do. I still haven't recieved my in-game title for the contest. At least I'm pretty sure I haven't. What is it exactly that I'm looking for? I've checked all the badges and my character ID and I don't see anything 'new' or that 'stands out'.

I've tried a good number of times to email lighthouse but my last 4 or 5 emails have gotten no response. I'm not sure if the email address is any good or what.

Just curious.

The ingame titles show up as yellow text over your name. You would see them only if your own player name was turned on in the display options (I'm pretty sure of this). To see what it looks like, look at the avatar for Hobo_Fruitsalid on the forums. He's got a special title shown.

Having trouble finding Hobo_Fruitsalid in the forums but I'll check my in-game options and see if anything shows up overhead.

Thanks for the info,

Hellllooooo...Lighthouse...Bueler...anybody that can help with this?

Still waiting for ingame title and don't have any other ideas on how to go about getting it. I know it's a minor thing, I was just actually pretty interested in getting it.

Thanks,
Todd

Ok, I feel I'm a pretty patient guy but we're approaching 6 months now and I've tried many emails, to no response. Posting on the boards, with no official response, PMing lighthouse using the board email, and one post that was actually DELETED.

Can somebody please say something official about this. Sorry for the attitude (and I'm sure my exclusive title at this point might just be "pain in the a#@") but nothing I've been doing has gotten any official response. I hate the fact that this is a public post, but private has been getting me nowhere.

The funny thing is, last I heard....like 5.5 months ago, Lighthouse told the dev to go ahead and turn on the name instead of meeting face-to-face in-game...because he didn't want to make me wait anymore to get it. :[

I know there's humor in that irony somewhere.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease respond,
Todd

FWIW: I've not gotten my title either. I've been quiet (plus I have been sticking mainly redside, whereas I want the title on my blueside WS) but I log in every so often and have someone check.

Any advice as to what I and 8Baller/Todd should do?

Sorry guys but I'm at a loss. I can say with some degree of authority that it doesn't seem like public posting is helpful either. I can certainly understand wanting something you've earned but I think complaining about it publicly runs the risk of making one seem ungrateful. I just think pursing this via emails and PMs is the way to go. Posting in the forums is essentially useless unless you believe dozens of us are going to take up the cause. I'm sorry but I don't see that happening.

That's the issue, Attache. 'Private' contacting doesn't seem to be working, possibly because due to busy schedules, other items needing more attention, etc.

I'm not trying to sound ungrateful, I'm just trying to determine if I should bide my time, or if I (or rather, we) have been forgotten.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease, and all that.

Not being an expert on the subject, I offer this course of action...
Contact Lighthouse or Ex Libris via PM to look into it (now that the problem's come into public light as well). If the Mr./Ms Paragon contest awards were any indication, an actual ingame 'meeting' between the winner and a person able to actually bestow a yellow character title is involved.

(I also hit the 'notify moderator' button; which may help bring this situation to their attention more quickly.)

I apologize again for cluttering the public forums with this but I'm still getting no where with this. Attache, I totally agree with you that people are not going to "take up the cause" or anything like that, such a thought never crossed my mind. However I disagree about the "ungrateful" part. Heck, if anything I'd think the opposite. It's not like I'm saying "I saved the world from a Rikti invasion and all I got was this T-shirt." The fact that I think the in-game title would be cool is exactly WHY I'm annoyed by all this.

Capt I'll continue to contact Lighthouse but I've lost track of the unanswered emails and PM's. I hadn't thought of the 'notify moderator' button option. Thanks.

LJ, I'm sorry to hear you're having the same issues. I hope it's not a trend of some kind.
