He must not be playing a Spines/DA, The only thing I've seen compare to a Spines/DA on AoE is a Fire/Fire Tank, which remains a debate between the Scrappers and Tanks on who is the higher performer.
While yes there are some impressive combinations in other AT's, what was the comparison to claim that Spines/Da (which many do hold the torch to being the King) was not?

Checking his post history, this seems to be a common post for him. Spines/DA stinks, other ATs are far better. No specifics given in any case.
Either he's just trolling, or he couldn't make the combo work and therefore it must be a bad combination that NOBODY could make work.
Very few other combinations do as much area damage before they get damage from the epic pools, something like fire ball.
Well, if we're talking AOE kings alone, Fire Blasters have to be entered into the conversation as the favorite- not Fire tanks... perhaps thats who cosmic is referring to?
Only thing is, Blaster Defense comes nowhere near Scrapper defense, and being that a Spines/DA is ALMOST a Melee-Blaster with all the AOE and lawnmower capabilities, Id choose a Spines/DA over a Blaster any day of the week, and is why Im currently leveling one now.
Cosmic, I would like you to reference specific sets that you think 'out-perform' Spines/DA, especially since folks are starting to even farm/PL with them now.

I figured Id let everyone know I reached the following Spines/DA Behemoth PvE Farming IO set bonus build tonight while playing with the hero designer..only downside is that youd need at least 90-115 million to purchase the IO sets:
Take note of the extra Fire Resistance (actual comes out to be around 40+% Fire Resistance w/Murky cut on), Higher HP bonus, Higher Endo max, and higher regen rate.

After 3 days of messing with the build and different power selections, I finally found a better build than those listed on here for farming/DPS/Defense, but I'll keep it proprietary knowledge for the moment....

I'm level 28, running quills with the Impeded Swiftness +smashing proc and the Scirocco's +lethal proc, Death Shroud with a Scirocco's +lethal proc, and Cloak of Fear with the Glimpse of the Abyss +psi proc. With the occasional spine burst and dark regen, I don't even need to really attack otherwise! I love it

You must having really borked you build mate. A properly built Spines/DA is an AOE monster. Heck I had several firekin farmers ask for my build after helping them farm. Needless to say they were VERY impressed.
The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

There's some quirks in there that seem kind of fruitless in my opinion. One thing right off the bat: Why did you slot LotG in Cloak of Darkness for defense? Dark Armor is entirely Resistence, getting those LotG's is most likely a waste of inf. Why did you use Multi-Strike's in Death Shroud? And you put way too many slots into Health, two of which isn't even doing anything for you (Numina Heal/End and Heal/Rech)

Nice build! My build that I'm planning on doing is actually almost identical to yours.
One suggestion I have is that if you wanted you could take the Cleaving Blow: Dam/End out of Ripper, you could slot the Steadfast +3% Unique into one of your shields for a global +3% def and +1.5% recovery.

Thanks for your very informative post! I have a few questions, however. First, I was under the impression that you can only have five of the same type of bonus from the sets. For instance, I thought that for recovery bonus you could only count five (whether they be 2.5% bonus or 1.5% bonus); is this true, or can you have five at 2.5% and five at 1.5% etc.? My second question is, wouldn't you be better off slotting for increased recharge rather than slotting procs? This is what I did with my build and I think that would generally yield more dps.

Not sure what builds you were reviewing, but take a look at the most recent posted by myself on this page. It has significantly more accuracy, regeneration, resistance, endurance recovery, and recharge reduction than your build. So I'm not quite understanding where you were having difficulty with "Endurance Management". Even if swapping a few things around for cheaper IO's, can manage a near similar amount across the board that I have currently.

my 2 cents...the above builds all have Heal IO sets in Dark Regen. While the global bonus's are nice you dont need ANY heal buff for this power!
IMO Dark Regen is better slotted the same way you'd slot Spine Burst or Quills..with the PBAoE IO sets
perma jump is ---> /up 1
The extra heal is downright lovely for AVs when all the subordinates are down and you only have 1 target to draw from.
What makes Dark Regen spectacular is its ability to make you go from an empty to a full green bar, with only 1 target you'll make it 1/4 - 1/2 of the way there

Spines/DA is one of those sets that I like to play with in Mids to see what I can get out of it. Since a lot of people keep mentioning farming, here's a build I might use for killing hordes of demons, if I had the cash to build it. It sacrifices primarily psionic mitigation (even if I'm still over 50%) to shore up fire defense/resist, and I tried to go for a little bit of damage and recharge set bonuses. It's tough on the end bar, like a lot of spine/da builds, but it's not too bad. I don't know if I'd have every toggle running at once. I ended up going for a little bit of set bonuses on dark regen instead of ideal slotting, but you've still got a mostly full heal off of 3 enemies every 10-13 seconds.

Spines / DA has interesting elements but in the end it is a sub par performer at best. A couple of the other combo's beat the snot out of it for speed and performance.
They arent truly the AoE kings. And they definately arent the fastest grinders / farmers / pl'ers. And of course thier weaknesses / limitations cant be shored up like you can with other combo's.
And this is from experience. I have a spine/da with an optimized aoe build. It just doesnt cut it compared to my other toons. Yes I dumped a few 100 million on the market hoping to make it great, but the other aoe beasts out there eat it alive.
