Good point.

Well, Grave, discussing does not naturally mean getting "worked up."
That would be arguing.

I wanted to get people's opinions on the matter because what he did was so monumental that it inspired someone to translate it into a new media 40 years later.

I would be suprised if people outside of our families would know about us nearly half of a century after our deaths.

This thread reminded me of a comic of a similar nature.

Comic.

I feel this is not such much about a message but I do like the style.

EDIT: Possibly NSFW.

That is the weirdest web comic ever.

I don't remember this forum becoming a political one, but art often is political. It's just as inapropriate to me to say people can't discuss political imagery here as it is to say they are required to (no that anyone has called for censorship, just saying). As usual, my stance is "if you don't like the content of the thread, simply don't participate in it."

As for the game character....who knows. I think its a provocative design but it's kinda high brow for a callous joke. Doesn't really bother me or interest me enough to ponder the motivation.

The actions of the monk in real life don't make any sense to me from a Buddhist perspective. A central image in many schools of Buddhism is a man (Buddha) saving a child (us; our karma-bound consciousness) from a burning house (existence as we know it). So i guess immolating yourself comes across as ironic. It's a great protest gesture....just don't see how it's supposed to point anyone towards enlightenment. I feel sorry for the copy cat immolations this inspired. The accounts say the monk didn't flinch at all. A master of meditation would likely feel nothing at all. People with lesser ability may not have been so fortunate.

Generally anyone starting a conversation stating I don't mean to offend you is looking for an argument. It may have been taken as a taunt, based on the first several comments.

You have my take on the matter... back to art for me.

From a political and religious perspective, his action ascended him beyond being just a man because his actions were un imaginable.
He became an idea and "Remember, ideas are bulletproof."

Wow, Hex. Come all out with the claws, eh?

I never said I was not willing to discuss it. I was pressed for time and just wanted to get it out there and review the thread later.

From what I could tell from the posts of the creator, his intentions were not in bad taste. He made the toon as an homage to an icon of determination and will.

I think it is great to honor heroes of the world. Great heroes don't come around very often and I think it is our responsibility to show the rest of the world how great the people are/ were.

Show me the claws. I'd like to see where you got that from.

Well that's not really a Buddhist perspective. Enlightenment transcends the mind and thus ideas. Politically, it doesn't come across as a viable catalyst for social change.

The quote was from Alan Moore's "V for Vendetta." I thought the words were fitting fitting, not any relation to the book.
I cannot imagine how this could not grab attention, which is the objective of any protester. We remember his image. Hardly anyone knows his name. He is an icon, an idea.

Hex, the comments you made sounded very pompus to me. They probably wern't but such is the nature of the forum beast.

Since this is turning into a a slap fight thread I will go ahead and raise the nessicary flags:

IBTL
IBTD
BAN
MOD

There, that should snag the filters.

I think the character is fine. It should be left alone in my opinion. We all have different opinions on what's "right" and "wrong, but it's the Mods' and Devs' that matter in the end.

I would tend to agree. What I feel is appropriate or not may not rise to the level of the character being banned.

Art is about emotional response, reflections of life and society, messages, conveying ideas through visual means. All of this makes politics(and anything else) fair game in the realms of art and art discussion, as they all pertain to art. If you're here for some pretty pictures, that's great, but it doesn't change the nature of the beast, so to speak.

the point is to make people think, and make people talk. If you feel nothing, the artist has ultimately failed. That doesn't mean that you have to feel something profound-- ooos and ahhs or something that makes one person smile is sufficient. But the fact remains.

To me, the player of the character in question and his motivations... aren't the important point, here. The important point is what happens. And look. People are discussing. People are remembering the referenced event. Some are discovering it for the first time. Some may be forced to evaluate things they don't think about very much. Whatever else can be said about it, it has done that much, and that's enough.
