I did not know the rules but I think dressing up as an npc is not modding...

Does not always detect CoH

Were those real swords that people had, or play ones??

Also, yep, I don't think that Carnie costume can be made with the editor.

And seriously that's my question. Who is Cookie Girl heh

Congrats to Marisa, the overall winner! She's from the same city as myself, and I love her much for representing Riversidians everywhere!

[/ QUOTE ]
Yay for Riversidians... everywhere!
[ QUOTE ]

How do you feel?

[/ QUOTE ]
I feel great! Thanks! I was really surprised; there were many awesome entries.

Avonlea, it's actually the Translucent cape on my costume, not the insect one. My main hero Fatare uses the insect one though, maybe I'll try it someday! By the way, great job on your costume (as always)!

An additional tidbit: I entered the first Halloween costume contest with Fatare's pre-cape outfit. I didn't have time to make a costume last year, so I was happy just to be able to enter this year. Thanks again, Cryptic, NCSoft, Djundi (photographer and invaluable assistant), and fellow players who make the game a joy to play (especially the Liberty League!)

Ok, ok! Anyway, thanks!

Great costumes all, so cool. Makes me wana do one next year. Maby.

Great job to everyone that entered! Some amazing ones out there.

And WOW to the judges for letting that carnie costume through. So she won over $120 worth of stuff and didn't even meet the requirements? I have no vested interest in the contest at all, and it's a little concerning that she won prizes, let alone was allowed to keep her entry.

Here is what you need to do: dress up as one of your characters.

The good news: I doubt you'll ever want for a team again. The bad news: No matter what their archetype says, your teammates will all be stalkers.

Hilarious. Thank you for starting my mkorning off right.

Great job, everyone!

Be well, people of CoH.

Congratulations to the winners!

Darn, I wish I could make one for my character... A full suit of body armor won't be easy, though.

[/ QUOTE ]

Tell me about it! (Bubbleyumm reporting)

Special thanks to Liz, my Dad, Joe, Jan and Bait, none of whom read the forums ^_^

There were some amazing costumes! Even people who weren't selected, just some AWESOME stuff! Congratulations to everyone, your costumes looked great!! ^_^

Okay, I'm puzzled, now that I look at the winners again... Nepharim's in-game picture looks exactly like a Carnie costume. Is it possible to make that costume in the costume creator? If it is, I'd love to know how...if it isn't, then that's clearly not her character, and that seems like shenanigans.

I mean no disrespect since her real-life costume really is amazing, but that does seem a little sketchy to me.

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe I'll have to try, but the jester cap is not available as far as I know. I've done Paragon protector and Tsoo, but never tried carnies.

As for the legality of it: Could it be one of those "disguise" missions?

Posted

I'm not gonna believe people are gonna be this way about the carnie costume ... Life is too short to get all hung up about things like that.

It was a great costume, it took a fair amount of guts (for lack of a better word) to submit the picture and subject herself to possible ridicule (which I might add that only those folks that submitted entries, and took the same potential risk, would even have a right to comment, the rest of you really need to shut it) ...

And ultimately ... SO WHAT if it doesn't perfectly follow the letter of the rules ...

Besides ... Have you remotely considered that the person has been reading your, less than flattering, judgements about her efforts ??? Or are you just not caring how she might feel about it ...

Whatever happened to just keeping it to yourself ???

Posted

I dont think anyone is racking on her for her costume, its the fact that it isnt HER costume, but the costume of a generic mob.

I think her dressup look good, but like others I feel it is wrong to let her win when she "cheated".
If the contes had been labelled: Dress up like a npc from the game, then she would have been a worthy winner (or runner up to be ecxact)

Cheers Poul

p.s.
ohh and congratualtions to all who won (and participated) its great to see you dressed up

And you'd be wrong. Everyone has a right to comment. It's not something you earn.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

Aside from the strict legal requirements that surround any sweepstakes, rules are in place to describe what and how you participate. What if a player had a kickass Knives of Artemis costume in her closet but she didn't use it because she followed the rules? How would that make HER feel about someone else breaking the rules and winning?

The judges in the very first contest were sticklers. People were disqualified for taking pictures indoors in their homes instead of going out in public or for not putting "City of Heroes" on their costume. (That's not a requirement any more, it seems.) This year's judges were not as strict or were not trained sufficiently to realize how strict they were supposed to be.

[ QUOTE ]

Besides ... Have you remotely considered that the person has been reading your, less than flattering, judgements about her efforts ??? Or are you just not caring how she might feel about it ...

[/ QUOTE ]

I care quite a bit about it, actually, so smeg off, eh? The plain fact is that the costume breaks the rules. It's a great costume and I hope that Nepharim takes pride in it regardless. Nobody is dissing her efforts. That doesn't change the facts, though. Contests aren't about making exceptions for people in order to avoid hurting their feelings. Contests of any sort are all about following the rules to get a reward.

[/ QUOTE ]

No ... It was (and is) my opinion. In my opinion only people who entered the contest have a right to make comment about the outcome ... They did the work ... They took the risk.

You sat at home and armchair-quarterbacked the outcome after the fact ... Put yourself out there and see how it feels.

[ QUOTE ]
I care quite a bit about it, actually, so smeg off, eh?

[/ QUOTE ]

Uh ... No. But thanks for the offer.

There are many other avenues to express your concerns over the outcomes, besides publically crying CHEAT !!! Which you did.

Oh I dunno ... PM to a mod maybe ???

Not everything needs to be a public spectacle.

Posted

It's called the internet and by placing that picture there it becomes a public spectacle, whether you like it or not.

You have to go by the facts....

1 - The costume DID NOT follow the rules set forth.

2 - She won prizes due to a costume that did not meet requirements.

3 - Other people could have had the chance to win these prizes who followed the rules had it been judged as the rules stated.

I would think people that DID NOT enter the contest would have a more valuable opinion on this than people who did enter and didn't win, so you're opinion is flawed in my eyes.

So....what, we have people exploting out of game contests now?

My lord what's wrong with geeks these days....

Now the contests are going to be nerfed.

Zeus, how did you get around with that costume? It looks like one solid hard shell. Or did you go as a statue?

[/ QUOTE ]

It's not a hard shell, the whole thing is constructed of polyurethane foam. I created a full body mold of a heavily muscled human, and poured a chemichal in that blew up 15 times it's size and turned into foam. So the whole thing is rather thin... well, maybe an inch thick at some parts, but it has to be as it's a wearable costume. And.. fully flexible of course.

Actually the flexibility was a BIT of an issue, as the shoulders didn't move about as much as i would have liked. The other joints were fine.. just not the shoulders... This limited my mobility and made it so I couldn't touch my own head. I'll have to work on the design a bit. But other than the shoulders the thing works fine... I actually wore the torso out bowling the night before I took the picture... I wore the labcoat and cowl with the torso, and the whole thing actually looked pretty badass.

Just as a tip though.. don't enter a bowling alley with a full latex cowl. The ear covering acts as an amplifier to all ambient sound.... the cowl lasted about thirty seconds in the bowling alley.

Zeus - god of flexibility

And spud.. it's a matter of interpretation, but saying "Shut up, you!" also isn't considered very polite in most situations, no matter WHAT your intention. The other people in this thread don't appear to be the impolite ones.

But seriously, I have to assume the people at NCSoft knew what they were going to be causing when they selected a winner who they knew should have been disqualified. I'm assuming hyper-man was disqualified for suspicion of photoshopping in a background (the background DOES look a little like a postcard picture, but I'm no expert in image manipulation), since his costume/location combination was clearly superior to everyone elses, mine included, and I was standing in front of a 40 foot statue of a hero! So I suspect that hyper-man was disqualified but the carnie wasn't... you HAVE to know that NCSoft expected the reaction... and simply didn't care.

And.. I assume that is what people are complaining about. Not that someone with a good costume won... no one is complaining about that. But they're complaining about the dartboard appearance of who is disqualified and who isn't.

Every contest has some appearance of a dartboard involved. No matter who runs it. I'm sure each of us can look at at least one of the contest winners and think "wow.. I wouldn't have even put that person in the top ten, let alone as a winner". Even a systematic approach can LOOK random. But when you add in something that really seems extra random on top of the already random appearing judging process... well, that is really dissuading for some people.

Just because you don't care... doesn't mean others don't. If you don't share their concerns, great. But it's rude as hell to tell them to shut up just because you don't share their concerns.

Zeus - god of the straight and narrow

You are right ... Definitely my bad, though I still do think publically calling someone a cheat is a bit much.

I've been away for a while and I've been picking up a tone that hasn't been sitting well with me since being back to the forums, and this thread, along with another or two, just kinda put me over the edge.

I knew there was a reason I stopped coming around here ... It was irritating me to read a fair chunk of the posts here. I see (and am a bit disappointed) it hasn't changed a whole lot.

Not to worry though ... I'll only stick around till irritation outweighs enjoyment.

Nice seein you again Zeus ... Nice costume.

*squeeks* Thanks!! Honestly I'm amazed (but thrilled none the less) that I won best hero! It was truly a labor of love, I spent hours and hours on it. Each piece looks good individually, but it didnt come together the way I wanted it to. Especially because Bubs is so curvy (hips, chest & shoulders maxed, waist minned, so she's very very hour-glassy) and that was totally NOT portrayed in my costume (that's mostly the fault of the rib/torso piece). And the helmet looks *huge.* I was so excited with the individual pieces, but when I saw the photos of the entire costume, I thought "okay, well I look silly and have no chance of winning, but at least I accomplished something." Maybe I'm just being too self-critical.

I also feel like an idiot because I didn't take a screenshot of Bubs in an office door mish. Everyone else's photo and screenshot have a similar background, and I didn't even think of that. (Duhr.) I just grabbed my favorite screenie of her and turned it in.

Thank you for the kudos! ^_^ I'm glad people liked the plaque and the "badge earned" thing.. I was determined to have that in the photo. There were other locations that I thought would look cool too (a large concrete block thingie with a plaque, and a statue) but I couldn't get to either location before dark. I spend all the daylight hours at work, and didn't finish the costume until two days before the due date, so I couldn't even do it on the weekend! I was really fortunate to be able to call a coworker and ask him to bring in his camera. And interestingly enough, he thought "Any game that's good enough to get someone to spend this much time on a costume, and wear it AT WORK, has to be good!" So he bought the game that night, and plays now too!! ^_^

I liked that carnival of shadows costume, but I can see why people are upset- the rules DID say dress up as your character, not dress as an enemy or NPC.

I built a kickass living skyscraper costume this year, but did not enter the contest- why? Because as spectacular as it looked, it did not meet the requirement of being similar to my character's costumes. Most of it is impossible currently- free hanging kimono style sleeves fastened around my upper arms, a long ankle length gown that hung freely down to my ankles, the glowing headpiece, and the finishing touch- a massive set of dancer's silver Isis wings hanging from my back as a cape.

I loved that costume, but did not enter it because it didn't fit the rules. By the time the contest was announced, it was too late for me to make another costume that more closely resembled the black martial arts robes of my main character.

So I agree with the people who are upset over something that appears in violation of the rules winning a prize when so many other good things got nothing.

Call me crazy, but in looking through all the entries, several look NOTHING like the characters they are supposed to be. They only thing thay have in common is some shared colors.

Personally, I think that anyone who had a name that had a period in it, or letters reversed, like "a" and "i," should be null and void for lack of creativeness in name making. C'mon, it's not that hard to make another name, without having to hurt everyones braincells with poor grammar. Learn to spell!!!

On a positive note, some great entrees, especially the winner.
