"You have talent. I hate you."
I'm a Brit. I am naturally ironic.
And I mean that ironically.
Of course I don't bloody mean it when I say it. I am genuinely without artistic talent. Sure, I can visualise brilliantly, but there is no help for me when it comes to putting that visualisation into practice.
Sometimes, just sometimes, there are those who - despite all the will in the world - can't draw. Digitally or otherwise. I push myself with Lightwave renderings. So I am always in awe of those who can put their dreams onto paper or screen.
In any case, I would be extremely surprised if anyone took umbridge at that sort of comment - it's something that is part of the community spirit and general humour of the boards.
umbridge. That's a big word!!!!!!!
Dang you brits and your big words!

I hate people who hate.
Just have to take it as it seems to be...a crude sarcastic compliment. Nothing else...nothing more. Why take the time to complain about it? Keep the psycho-babble at a minimum.
There's only one real correction that I have to make. I can't draw freehand. I never will be able to. It's not a matter of practice, or knowledge. I have a minor condition that plays hell with my fine motor control. After a short while drawing or writing, my hands start to shake uncontrollably. If I have a ruler or something, I am ok, but if you put a piece of paper in front of me and ask me to draw something, you might get something recognizable.
It's something that has always irritated the hell out of me, and I have learned to accept it. But at the same time, I really dislike when people say "It's something that anyone can pick up," because it's not. I'll admit that I am jealous of people who can pick up a piece of paper and just draw.

Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?
For the majority of my life, I've worked on increasing my ability to create art in various mediums. For some reason, drawing and physical art have never been able to progress beyond mediocre.
I've put quite a bit of years into those ideals but I ended up finding a medium that I do excell at: Prose.
I think we all have talents for certain things, be it drawing, creating a sculpture or even cooking a fine meal. It's not terribly hard for me to ascribe to that ideiology. Regardless, I feel we trade-off one talent at the expense of another. We're all talented at something.
I'm talented at ogling other people's art!
A talent all artists appreciate.
Personally I dislike the equivalent of "I hate you!":
"You Suck!"
I think the problem is that with the medium we are dealing with, typed words, the tone/voice/inflections of friendly banter are completely missing.
That being said, it is a simple fact of life that not everyone can be a Rembrandt, a Michaelangelo, or a Da Vinci. That also being said, Rembrandt wasn't necessarily Rembrandt, Michaelangelo wasn't necessarily Michaelangelo, nor was Da Vinci - Da Vinci.
All you have is yourself, and you have to do the things that make you happy, and success should never be measured in comparison to others.
In all honestly I know they are being sarcastic so it doesn't bother me.
As far as talent vs learning. Some people just have the ability to learn faster and can just jump right into something. Be it sports, writing, or art. That in my opinion is were God given talent comes in.
I would not say it's hate or jealousy. It's a compliment. No need to feel offended by it. Unless you're that sensitive. That person who is saying it just admires you work. Probably wishing they had the know how and done it first. But it isn't that crucial to them if they knew how to do it or not. They just are amazed by your skill.

Or, at the very least, spell it correctly. "Umbrage."
Getting back to the thread:
And, yes, of COURSE people don't literally mean it. And, yes, I understand what sarcasm is. I grew up in Massachusetts where sarcasm is the unofficial second language. The point I was trying to make is WHY be sarcastic when you're supposed to be complimenting someone on their hard work? It's bad form. Is it that hard to just give the compliment without the backhand?
Anyway, another thing I wanted to know is if other artists were bothered by it, and it doesn't seem that they are. And, by starting this thread, I've pretty much made it a fait accompli that when I finish my pic of my main villain, the thread is just going to be people telling me that they hate me (whether they like the pic or not), so I guess it's run its course.

Y'see.. I dunno.... I guess it's just the receipient in question. If there wasn't a compliment upfront, like "that looks amazing" or "you're a great artist", then I'd agree with your sentiment. But there's a compliment, THEN an ironic one-liner. At least, in the vast majority of like comments.
But I can see the general point you're trying to make.

Well, I promise I will be less ambigious in the future. If anything, this thread as presented me with the alternative notion that sometimes popular expressions do not translate well onto the screen.

It's bad form? Honestly, I wouldn't notice. It's not even that strong a language. In my life it wouldn't be unusual to hear this kind of conversation:
"Hey man, I just got a 150k a year job where I get some sweet loving from beautiful ladies, oh yea."
"[censored] you, you son of a [censored] . I hope you fall in a fire and die. [censored] . "
"Ha ha, suck it!"
Well, I'd never hear the part about one of my friends getting that kind of job. But that's just friendly conversation.

and some will never draw(/insert artform here) awesomely no matter how hard they practise.
[/ QUOTE ]
Totally disagree. This kind of thinking is what cripples a lot of my 3d students. I'm not sure where in society it comes from, but I'd like to start a one-man mission to stamp it out!
You can do ANYTHING you want. All you have to do is practice and be willing to learn.
EVERYONE CAN LEARN TO DRAW!!
I honestly seriously believe that. And I've taught people how to draw before (and model in 3d and paint textures and animate) so I have a real reason to believe it.
[/ QUOTE ]
QFT. With enough hard work and self-discipline, anyone CAN do anything. I try to teach the same concept when I'm helping others on the tech end of the spectrum.
There's an old quote that I agree with: "Anything I can do, you can do and more."
I can't draw. But I CAN swap troubleshooting for artwork. Same thing in my mind. I'm getting the job done.
[ QUOTE ]
If there's no such thing as talant, then anyone could be an Einstein simply by reading a lot of physics books, and engineering and science schools would be graduating thousands of geniuses a year.
[/ QUOTE ]
Talent only speeds up the process to genius and ability. Yes, given enough time, I could gain Picasso's level of ability and insight. Same goes for Einstein or Hawking. Might take extending my life a few decades, but I could get there. We all could. The point being, the only thing that stops anyone from anything is one's self.
The mind and its abilities are infinite, as is our capacity for laziness.
Be well, people of CoH.
Seriously...do you think it's entirely possible for anyone to draw well?
Man...thats a hard mindset for me to get over... I've never been able to put anything reasonable on paper. Even my stick-men suck.
But....you've kinda given me hope....
Just look at me! I think I'm doing pretty well in such a short time, I'm just afraid I'm gonna 'plateau' and not get much better.
Personally, I love to hear it. I love to joke around, so I take it as that, a joke. And, in all honesty, I have major self-confidence issues. Hearing that someone is jealous of what I can do helps give me a little bit of an ego boost and inspires me to keep drawing/inking/coloring/etc.
