Building A WarTroller

Hey magic! Excellent guide you've got here, just like your other(s)! I was thinking about doing a mind/sonic cont as a new main for I5, but want it to be more wartroller geared post 26, as before that time, single target dmg doesn't seem so wow-worthy. I came up with this:

Please ignore lvl of slotting, and some of it is messed up as sonic enhancements aren't correct in this hero planner atm. Anyway, I went for a group-oriented type thing just by taking and slotting the 'rings', but Lev, Mes and Dom look like they'll give me great dmg if/when I feel like soloing. I really wanted to work in Confuse somewhere, as I love the idea of a 'pet' from lvl 12 onwards, but I don't see where I can work it in. I took TK over MH due to early on teams pretty much eliminating the sleep's power, and if I solo, mob size won't be very large so I can probably make due with the first 3 Mind powers there. Where would you suggest I move slots around so that Terrify becomes the major dmg dealer described? I can probably respec at 24/26 and alter my playstyle accordingly. Do you think I'd be better off going group/control (not dmg) oriented from 1-20+ and then switching once I get Terrify? Or do you think that I can make do as is and just take a slot each from my other dmg attacks and the shields at 28ish and move them to Terrify? Or would I be better off removing all slots from Total Dom and putting them in Terrify? It seems like the hold would be miniscule from Total Dom and I'd hardly be able to use it though. I also took primal for now as I can easily change my choice later on, and sonic can be a real end drain, and if I were to be a bit team-oriented 40+, then I'd still want Primal. Thanks for reading and once again, great guide!

I've had a few requests for a post-ED WarTroller. I've put together this template that should work well regardless of the secondary. It's also a nice template for building a Blastroller (i.e. a WarTroller that can't Tank).

Lvl 1 - Mez (1 Acc, 1 End Red, 3 Dam)
Lvl 2 - Dom (1 Acc, 1 End Red, 3 Dam, 1 Recharge Reduction)
Lvl 4 - Levitate (1 Acc , 1 End Red, 3 Dam)
Lvl 6 - Confuse (1 Acc)
Lvl 8 - Hasten (3 Recharge Reductions)
Lvl 10 - Assault (1 or 2 End Red)
Lvl 12 - Travel
Lvl 14 - Travel
Lvl 16 - Fitness
Lvl 18 - Fitness
Lvl 20 - Stamina
Lvl 22 - Tactics (3 To Hit Buff)
Lvl 24 - Mass Hypnosis (1 Acc, 3 Recharge)
Lvl 26 - Terrify -(1 Acc, 3 Recharge, 2 Dam)
Lvl 28 - Whatever floats your boat
Lvl 30 - Whatever floats your boat
Lvl 32 - Mass Confusion (1 Acc, 3 Recharge)
Lvl 35 - Whatever floats your boat
Lvl 38 - Whatever floats your boat.
Lvl 41 - Fireball (1 Acc, 3 Dam, 2 Recharge)
Lvl 44 - Fire Blast (1 Acc, 3 Dam, 2 Recharge)
Lvl 47 - Whatever floats your boat
Lvl 49 - Whatever floats your boat

Taking Force Fields as a secondary automatically makes this build a WarTroller. Folks who like to herd with Rad or Storm can do that with this build also.

Taking Total Domination some time before Fireball is probably a good idea. This will let you get double damage on a back to back Fireball/Terrify attack. A single Acc in Total Dom is all that's needed.

Sorry for the late replay Shallow. The build you have looks more like a Blastroller than a WarTroller, meaning I don't see a way to Tank in the build.

Since you've posted this, ED has come out, so you'll probably not want more than 3 of any one type of enhancement in a power.

Terrify is worth 6-slotting, Total Domination, not so much. So you can swap the slots in those two powers to up your damage capabilities and actually keep you team safer due to Terrify's shorter recharge.

Mass Hypnosis makes a nice primer for Terrify to get the 100% Containment damage bonus. If you decide to go this route, slot it with the same number of recharges as Terrify.

Mass Confusion is your #1 damage dealing power and will buff your XP over time. It's worth slotting well. 1 ACC, 3 Recharge is my recommendation.

If you want to deal damage, the Fire Epic will do more for you than Primal Forces. Primal is a nice pool, but damage is not its forte.

Any thoughts on possibly updating this for I6?

Specifically, your plan for a Mind/Storm controller is very much like my plan was, way back during beta/post-launch. I left the game in Oct. 2004 for various reasons, including the low damage output at the time, combined with the "contact gaps" that used to occur.

But, I'm re-upping during the 14-day reactivation period now, and was wondering if the improvements were as good as they seem...

No, there won't be an update. I cancelled my account shortly after I6 due to the endless nerfs. Statesman had said he was done nerfing powers with I5 and explained the I6 nerfs as nerfs to enhancements rather than powers. I decided to give the game another go and lo and behold I find out they nerfed Fireball.

So, I'm cancelling my account again, this time for the final time.

great guide. the slotting may be a bit yester-year, but I bet the principals still hold up. I can't wait to finish the blast chain.

Wow, way to resurrect a 2-year-old thread, Sam =P

That being said, it's still a sound concept (minus the pre-ED slotting advice).

Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Yes, the WarTroller is still alive and well. Since I've written the guide I've learned how to herd with Force Bubble and Super Jump without needing to pop lucks. Just jump in the middle of a group and jump out. You can herd entire (small) levels of indoor maps this way.

Here's an updated build:

Notes on the New WarTroller Build
The build is an excelent solo build. Mez, Dom, and Lev form its attack chain early. Confuse is also there early. Later we get Fire Blast. Aid Self + PFF allow for quick healing even during combat.

The build is a strong team build. There are 4 AoE controls, Mass Hypnosis, Terrify, Telekinesis, and Mass Confusion, all taken early in the build. Total Domination later adds to this and Fireball adds to team damage. Note, however, that the little bubbles are skipped completely. We do have Dispursion Bubble however.

The build has strong status protection. It protects against
* Sleep (from Health)
* Hold (from Acrobatics and Dispersion Bubble)
* Stun/Disorient (from Aid Self and Dispursion Bubble)
* Knockback (from Acrobatics)
* Immobilize (from Combat Jumping)
* Fear (From Tactics)
* Confuse (from Tactics)

The build is a strong PvP build. Confuse, Dominate, TK, and Terrify are all excellent PvP powers. PFF + Aid Self is very useful in PvP. Add stealth to super Jump via IOs and you have a very good PvP toon even at the lowest levels. The addition of Tactics at level 38 let's you spot those pesky Stalkers. By level 50 you can hold a Tank or a Brute with a Dominate, TK, Total Dom combo.

The build is the best herding tank I've built with a Mind Controller. The addition of Super Jump makes getting aggro over large areas with Force Bubble fairly easy.

The build still kills quick because Mass Confusion has survived all the nerfs over the years pretty well. I'd put kill times on par with builds such as Fire/Kin.

The build can herd and kill 5 man missions set to invincible solo.

LOL indeed. I did that last build when I had just returned to the game. Apparently, I was a bit rusty. While the build itself isn't bad, the notes to the build need a bit of work, so here goes:

The build is a good PvP build, especially for staying alive. Confuse, Dominate, TK, and Terrify are all useful PvP powers. PFF + Aid Self is very useful in PvP. Add stealth to super Jump via IOs and you have a good PvP toon even at the lowest levels. The addition of Tactics at level 38 let's you spot those pesky Stalkers when slotted with +Perception.

The build is the best herding tank I've built with a Mind Controller (Note: No longer true. I'll post what I think is a better build at some point in the future). The addition of Super Jump makes getting aggro over large areas with Force Bubble fairly easy.

The build still kills quick because Mass Confusion has survived all the nerfs over the years pretty well. In some cases the kill times on par with high damage builds such as Fire/Kin or Plant/Storm. Specifically, herding large groups and using Mass Confusion along with your other attacks can kill fairly quickly, especially against groups that have powerful attacks such as CoT Demons.

The build can herd and kill 6 man missions set to unyielding or invincible solo.

I like this thread. My first character is a lvl 50 Mind/Therm Rad, and my secondary build for him is a Wartroller build. Its a lot of fun to play.

Even tho there has been a lot of changes in the game, you can still tank with the Mind power set. Using Warmth as a self heal has saved me so much. That, along with Melt Armor, and I think the Thermal Radiation secondary powerset is really helpful for a Wartroller.

Great job with these builds!

Here are a few notes I'm adding about tanking with a Mind/FF/Stone build.

I just want to stress that tanking doesn't _replace_ your typical controlling duties, it supplements them. Teams will still be expecting you to lock things down and to bubble them. Also realize that while you can build a pretty good tank with Mind/FF (and especially Mind/FF/Stone), a real Tanker will almost always be a better tank than you.

The Line Of Immortality
If you do only one thing from this post, do this.

I'm listing this one first because it's the single most important aspect of everything else in this post. "The Line of Immortality" is a phase used by Arcanaville. It represents the situation where incoming damage is less than your own damage mitigation, healing and regen.

It's not hard at all to achieve this with an FFer. Slotting PFF with +Recharge and picking up Aid Self from the Medicine pool will do that for you. You'll be able to turtle up in PFF and heal more often than an Ice Tanker can Hibernate. This technique is so useful that I now pick up Aid Self at level 16 on my FFers as religiously as I pick up Stamina at 20.

Once you hit the Epics you can add Earth's Embrace from the Stone Epic. In addition to being a heal, Earth's Embrace will take you to the Controller Hit Point Cap, which is higher than the base Hit Points of a Brute. With EE, you'll be able to survive direct attacks from even AVs. You can also make EE perma with +Recharge IO bonuses.

You can see how tough this will make your toon in my Mind/FF solos Rikti Pylon video.

Taking The Alpha
An FFer is actually probably the best toon in the game for taking the alpha. With PFF up, you're going to have better self protection than a Stone Tanker in Granite.

The trick is determining what to do _after_ the alpha goes off. The easiest answer is to drop PFF and hit the baddies with an AoE. If you do this immediately after the alpha the baddies are pausing for their next attack and you won't get shot back at very much, even if you use something like Terrify as your AoE.

Another option is to have the team rush the baddies after you've taken the alpha. This splits the aggro amongst the team and lets you safely drop PFF and apply Terrify.

A third option is to prevent the alpha from ever even happening by opening with Mass Confusion or Total Dom rather than rushing in with PFF.

In the late game you can open with Fissure, followed up with an AoE control.

Leapfrogging Tankers
The phase "Leapfrogging Tankers" refers to having two Tankers on a team. While one Tanker is managing the aggro for the team, the other goes off and grabs another group of baddies and brings them back to the team. The idea is this reduces the time it takes to clear a mission.

To play the role of a Leapfrogging Tanker with an FFer, raise Dispersion Bubble and Force Bubble. Go off and find another group and jump right in the middle of them. Immediately raise PFF and head back to where the team is located.

Keeping The Pace
This phrase is used to describe the Tanker leaving the team while they are still finishing up a group. The team is almost, but not quite, done defeating the group. The Tanker heads off and aggros another group, moving them into a bunch for efficient AoEs if needed.

You can do this with an FFer by simply raising PFF and heading off to the next group.

Managing Aggro
A Tanker wants to keep aggro on them at all times. You can do this with your FFer as well by picking up Provoke and using it to supplement your more standard controls.

Your first choice should _always_ be to lock things down with controls. But if your controls are recharging or missed a few guys, Provoke is a fast recharge AoE that lets you easily fill the gap.

Even when there's a Tanker on the team, having Provoke can be useful for managing things that get by the Tanker. And Provoke (and Earth's Embrace) is absolutely required if you want to be able to tank AVs in the late game.

When you're managing the aggro on a team with no Tanker, don't be shy about asking the support toons to treat you just as if you were a Tanker. This means you get first priority for things like Fort and heals.

Herding
FF is actually a very good set for herding. I've put together a herding video tutorial of how to do it. Herding is probably best used to speed up soloing, but you can also use it to grab a few groups if you're on a team having a Blaster with a nuke and no Tanker.

Farming
Using herding, Mind/FF is actually a good farming toon. You just herd up a group, hit them with Mass Confusion, and then proceed to kill them. Having Detention Field available is a nice plus for when you aggro more than one boss.

You can see an example of this at the 2:00 mark in this Mind/FF overview video.

And here are a few notes about using Knockback as a control.

Chaos Control
This really means nothing more than knocking things around in order to make as big a mess as possible. It's extremely effective at keeping a team safe, especially when you can start knocking things in the Z direction on a 3D map. Repulsion Field and Force bolt can be used for this. Here's a video of Chaos Control in action

But you don't want to do this as a regular practice. Use it only when the team is in serious danger.

Sculpting The Battlefield
This technique uses the same powers as Chaos Control. But instead of knocking things around to make a mess, you're using the Knock powers to clump things together. Examples include Knocking things into a corner or against a wall, or knocking baddies that are heading to the "back row" toons back to the Tanker.

Feel free to use this technique whenever you like.

And here is a simple WarTroller build for I13. It's designed for team support and soloing, including farming and soloing AVs. The only chaos control power is Repulsion Field, which is also used for coming out of PFF safely when herding. You may want to get Seismic Smash rather than Hurl Boulder, but that option wasn't available in the online planner.

If you look carefully, you'll notice some empty slots. They're for single IOs like Global +7.5% recharge. To IO this out, I'd focus on +Recharge to get Earth's Embrace perma and a little +Accuracy so your vet powers hit. A Knockback Protection and Stealth IO would also be useful. Mass Confusion, the two 6-slotted heals, the Defense powers, and the AoEs are all good places to put IOs.

I'd recommend trying to always have Shivs on hand to contribute to AV fights when needed.

To turn this into a team support build for dual builds, swap the Earth Epic for the Primal Force Epic and get Power Boost. Drop Provoke and replace it with a Mind AoE control.

Another option is to use this build only for soloing. If you do that you can drop Deflection Shield and Insulation Shield and pick up Detention Field and another AoE control.

Here is a list with a few notes on the similarites between an Ice Armor/Super Strength Tanker and a WarTroller.

Ice Armor/Super Strength_____________WarTroller
Hoarfrost___________________________Earth's Embrace
Frozen Armor_______________________Dispersion Bubble/Rock Armor
Chilling Embrace_____________________Any AoE control
Wet Ice___________________________Dispersion Bubble
Permafrost_________________________None
Icicles_____________________________Any AoE damage
Glacial Armor_______________________Dispersion Bubble
Energy Absorption___________________None
Hibernate__________________________Personal Force Field/Aid Self
Jab_______________________________Any single target attack
Punch_____________________________Any single target attack
Haymaker_________________________Siesmic Smash
Taunt_____________________________Provoke
Hand Clap_________________________Any AoE control

Notes:
* Earth's Embrace gives the Controller more Hit Points than the base Hit Points of a Brute and can easily be made perma with Hasten and +Recharge IO bonuses.
* Dispersion Bubble does not protect against Sleeps
* An Ice Tanker will have 26% DEF(S/L, Energy, Negative Energy). A WarTroller will have 11% DEF(ALL) and up to 35% DEF(S/L)

You can see how tough this will make your toon in my Mind/FF solos Rikti Pylon video.

[/ QUOTE ]

You used two nukes, a shivan, and an HVAS. I recommend replacing that vid with one that shows what a 'naked' Mind/FF can do. As it stands, its more of an advertisement for CoH's temp pets than for your build.

First, I'm not getting into arguments over the definition soloing.

Second, the video shows how using Earth's Embrace and PFF + Aid Self lets the Controller survive repeated hits from the pylon.
