Just out of curiosity, how would Zwilliger know? Does he handle NCSoft contract negotiations?

  3. Well, I re-subed to try out the dark controller set, the water blasting set, and the nature affinity set. I managed to get an Ill/dark to 50 and solo the giant octo twice at level 48. But I didn't get far with water blasts or nature affinity before they announced the shut down.

So, while the boards are still up and running I wanted to stop by and wish everyone the best the future. Take care everyone.

If by "grow up" you mean "triggered a slow, steady decline that made the game's shut down seem a question of 'when', not 'if'", I'd say that's arguable, but would probably agree.

Nerfing hammios is what made IOs possible. That's why I said "ED era" rather than just plain old ED. Hammio nerfs, AoE hold nerfs, pet nerfs, and ED all happened back-to-back of each other. Then CoV was released, which gave a short-lived bump in subs followed by a steady decline that never ended.
  5. Sadly... this game never recovered from all those ED-era nerfs. The writing has been on the wall for CoH for a long time. I'm impressed they lasted as long as they did. With CO on life support and my general distaste for the DCU... I guess I'm off to The Secret World. At least there I only need to invest in 1 toon and I can get all the powers in the game. If they end up canceling the game, I won't have invested years taking 30 toons to the level cap, IOing them out, etc.

The above sentence is from the section on playing back a demorecord file. I have no idea what the sentence means. There is no properties button or link when you startup NCLauncher. There is no Properties option in the NCLauncher menu, and settings does not allow yolu to add command line options. There is no properties option when you right-click the NCLauncher app (Mac uses Get Info and has no place to add command line options). There is no properties file in the Contents folder of either the CoH app or the NCLauncher app.

    Ice/FF soloer?

Because the game is a broken, poorly designed MMO and rewards soloing disproportionately to teaming.

After 130 hours of soloing an Ice/FF you'll have a 50 with 1200 merits to buy IOs. After 120 hours of teaming you'll have a 50 with nothing that needs another 100 hours of grinding to get IOs.

    Ice/FF soloer?

Ice has next to no damage whatsoever. IO slotting for damage bonuses and procs isn't really going to change that. A 15% damage bonus on no damage is still no damage.

I got my Ice/FF to 50 in under 130 hours, and most of it was solong. The way I did it was by slotting Thunderstrikes in Chillbain (the ST Immobilize) and Block of Ice. This gives you a 14% +Accuracy bonus, which is enough to use the vet attack powers effectively. I have 3 vet attacks, Sands of Mu, Black Wand, and Nemisis Staff, but you really only need two.

Once you get to 50, you can power up the toon with incarnate attacks. Once you get a decent AoE attack, FF actually becomes a high damage toon. You can herd up groups and kill them quickly with your AoE. You can also pick up Siesmic Smash from the Earth Epic to give you good single target damage to finish things off. You can get an idea on how quickly you can finish missions by watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nml5LEtyjig The parts where I herd things up and kill them with an incarnate AoE should translate 100% to Ice/FF.

Here's a sample build for all this. It focuses on +Acc and +Recharge bonuses from IOs. In addition to the incarnate AoE, I'd recommend picking up Ageless for its +Recharge, +Recovery, and +End.

I've had a chance now to test a few different configurations of incarnate powers. For soloing AVs and such, I'd currently suggest Void as the AoE (for its -damage), Longbow as the pet (for it's range, damage, and -Regen), Ageless for the buff (for its +Recharge and +Recovery), Reactive for the debuff (for its -Resistance), and Muscular for the Alpha (For +Damage).

*/FF/Stone. My EM/Shields scrapper feels absolutely squishy in comparison. The controller has better HP and better defense vs _everything_ than the scrapper outside of "One With The Shield". And the controller has it 100% of the time with no crash.

As to the primary, Fire makes a good melee toon. Illusion/FF/Stone is the granite tanker of controllers. Plant and Mind both give you an AoE confuse power to shorten the time it takes to kill stuff.

And with all due respect to those folks suggesting Kin or Rad, you will never fully understand the definition of "squishy" until you play one of those two sets or empath.

Well, first of all, you shouldn't skip over or select _any_ troller based solely on damage. Trollers are about control. Even a Fire/Kin farmer depends heavily on control. Damage can play a part in selecting a troller, but it really shouldn't be the whole story.

And the tests absolutely reflect real-world performance. Great care was taken to ensure that.

What was tested was damage vs enemies with no resists or defenses. This was done so the tests aren't skewed. For example, had I tested vs robots, Illusion's damage would have been heavily sckewed lower than what appears here and the tests would have been useless.

The explanitory information isn't caveats explaining why the tests are invalid to other situations, they explain how the tests can be expanded for accurate use in other situations.

It's an unsubstaniated claim because it hasn't been tested. I have no doubts that Illusion can kill low level minions quickly. _Everything_ can kill low level minions quickly. But to determine if Illusion is substantially better at it than other sets, you need to test.

It's a test that I'm not going to do because I consider it a trivial activity. But others are free to run those tests if they wish.

I soloed the 2 AVs in the Incarnate missions on my Robot Traps before understanding the whole non AV setting options ( now when I do those missions I am set to -1 /1 no AVs regardless of the toon I am using). It was painfully slow. Afterwards I was annoyed because in my mind I was thinking I could have done 3 missions in the time spent wasting fighting those 2 AVs.
I pretty much agree. Soloing AVs and pylons and such is a good way to test what your toon can do, but it's not an efficient way to kill AVs. And since AVs have different rules for beating them than almost everything else in the game, the ability to solo AVs isn't even a good reflection on the abilities of the toon in general. But it is nice to know you can do it if the team needs it.

But I will chime in for my video where I solo Shadowhunter. That video shows how to clear an entire mission. If you want to see how a WarTroller solos, that's the video to watch. The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nml5LEtyjig

The question was about soloing, not whether or not the win was impressive.

What's impressive and what's not is subjective. You'll never convince me that buying +recharge from the store and having the perma unkillable pets do all the work while the controller hides behind a pillar is impressive. Never. My own definition of impressive involves risk. How much risk is the player presented with and how well does he deal with that risk. But I freely admit, it's my own definition.

Soloing, on the other hand, is pretty cut and dry. If you're the only player there, you're soloing. That's the _definition_ of soloing.

I have done it with the confuse a boss method and it works. The boss scales up in level along with the AV.

Works fine. Nightstar uses energy attacks, so that should give you an idea. The lowest defense I have against any type of attack is 26%. That plus being at the HP cap and being able to heal inside PFF makes the toon very hard to kill.

You can be the main tank.

For taking the alpha, you have several choices:

    * Super Speed + Fissure as an opener.
    * AoE control as an opener.
    * Raise PFF, dive into pile, alpha goes off, drop PFF, hit them with control as an opener.
    * With decent ranged defense + Dispersion Bubble going, use Provoke as opener. I often jump to the back of the group when doing this so that all the baddies that are aggroed on me turn around 180 degrees. This makes it easy to see where I'm missiing aggro.

Different varients of a WarTroller have additional options. Ill/FF can open with PA. Plant/FF can open with Creepers.

Once the fight gets going, use controls to lock down as much as possible and Provoke to keep misc aggro on you.

I've tanked for teams many times with my WarTrollers. I just haven't captured in on video yet as I'm more concerned with keeping the team safe than running video. Soloing I can take my time and get everything set up the way I want it.

    Edit:
I just wanted to add my usual caveat and say a Tanker is always the best tank. The only time I tank for teams is when the tanker dies, or there just is no tanker. When there's a tanker there, I play the Controller role.

    Risk.

With perma unkillable pets grabbing aggro from the AV, the Illusionist faces almost zero risk. With the WarTroller way, the controller is taking the full brunt of the attack from the AV (or pylon, or whatever is being soloed).
