Archvillains: Not working as planned.
I was sure I explained what an MMORPG stood for somewhere but it must have been on another thread.
Massive: This means that the world is huge. Lots of content to explore. New content being added. This is the kind of thing you can't get from a console.
Multiplayer: The ability to know that all around you other players are engaging in the virtual universe and to interact with them if you choose to. The knowledge that the world can be changed by not just you but by those around you.
Online: Self explanitory.
Role: The ability to create a concept of what you want a character to be and to put that concept into the Massive world of Multiplayer action. This should always be emphasized in these types of games and CoH has done this the best of all games that I have payed. Role does not mean rigidity of function however.
Playing: Self explanitory. We are hear to interact with the world not turn it into a forum or chat room. (My personal feeling.)
Game:This is game folks and should be fun for everyone! No one should be left going "Gosh you want me to feed you again! But I just fed you and I am tired of looking after you!"
My portfolio:
I have a lvl 42 Ice/Ice blaster on Guardian server.
My playing hours are normally between 4AM and 7AM EST. A difficult time to find groups.
I'm 51 years old, retired military and prefer not to group with immature (actions not age) players.
I have only grouped 4 times on 6 characters and died every time thru less than capable hands, not excluding my own.
I seldom die while soloing.
Hence, I prefer to solo. Save the flames until you start paying my monthly charge.
Currently I have 3 active missions, all having an Archvillain to deal with. Chance of success = Zero.
I could wait for 4 levels as I did with Envoy of Shadows but that was not in keeping with the 'solo playability' touted when I purchased COH. I could recruit some level 50's ... seems too akin to cheating even if I could find them during my hours of gameplay.
My choice then is to grind away at street crowds to advance.
Moral of my story:
This is not the solo game it was advertised to be unless AV's are removed or downsized.

"Solo playability" is not equivalent to a "solo game". The game is certainly playable for a solo character - you're currently playing it by street grinding. Evidently you're quite a good player at that, too, since you seldom die. You are, by your own admission, able to solo - just not to solo all the content. This is in keeping with Statesman's posts on the matter - soloing is a goal; soloing EVERYTHING is not a goal. This game was *never* advertised as a solo game - it's an MMORPG.
That said - I prefer soloing myself, and I agree that finding AVs in all your missions is a bit disconcerting (although I've not had the possibility of that yet, it's staring me in the face next level). But, recognizing that this is an MMO and *not* a solo game, I bite the bullet and ask for help when I'm faced with a mission that's too tough for me to do alone (For the record: I asked for (and quickly received!) help with the Envoy of Shadows - all three times; soloed Terra).

Good points. Yes I can solo, but not all facets of the game. I hadn't really looked at that perspective and you're right. I retreat to the logic before me.
I've blaster-scrapper duoed that entire Praetorian arc... so I don't see the whole problem with it being too hard. Of course, I guess some people wanna just stand there and blast or swing instead of using any form of tactics from pulling to, god forbid, running and healing, or better yet, something simple like a good luck. Tis Loony talk to the "casual" gamer.
States no please.

my broadsword/regen scrapper soloed an equal level vahzilok. he was 17 (21), I was 17. took me a while, but I found a nifty trick. I had superspeed, and a contact right outside. I'd grab 4 enrages, 4 lucks, 2 CaBs, and pound, retreat. my haste and dull pain recharged fast, and so I taunted over his fallen body.
He might have nice guns, but nothing is a match for my lazer beam swords, which are sword powered.

My scrapper solo'd Dr. Vahz, too. Not a TF, just the end of a mission tree. He was orange to me, so that tells you relative level.
A bunch of shield insprations (luck? the purple one) + a few acc, and he went down pretty good, had some health left, was almost ready to click a heal insp, but didn't need to. He wore out my hasten by quite a bit (not slotted with recharge red. beyond just the one). Saved some shield insps for the second half of the battle, btw, and needed them.
I suppose if you clicked like 8 purple inspirations you could last longer against a purple AV, but you'd never come near enough damage to it because of level differences before you ran out of inspirations. I suppose if you had a buddy to feed you more inspirations, but who wasn't in your group (not possible in a mission, I believe, unless they quit after entry) then you might do it, but that's not really "soloing", is it?
"Hey! You knocked generic cola all over your precious D20 books!"
ED: Now I know how Nancy Kerrigan felt: "Why...?!? Why...?!?"
All I need is a scrapper/blaster and one other character and AV's go down. I don't recruit higher level people, I recruit lower level people. SOmetimes folks who are 10 to 20 levels away from the AV missions.
Maybe some people will call on level 50 characters, so be it. I'll keep fighting them the way they were meant to be fought, the challenging way. Gather a few friends and lay waste.
I don't bear any grudge to the people who want help from a higher level character. Their choice. Just like it was my choice to cultivate friendships over the pas 48 levels so when the time came, I had all the backup and support I needed.
Currently, there are several people who will be ready in a very short time to assist me with AV missions. All it takes is a call.
Be well heroes!
You mean there are Tactics involved in killin AV's? Someone has been keeping secrets from me.
Me and a -1 to me Emp Def took out Envoy of Shadows..we also did Terra, but I coulda soloed her, she was weak. Took 3 people to take down Vahz at even level (purple con) but we had no problems at all.
Duo'd the Woodsman and Zenflower today, they weren't even Heroes (scaled to EBs on ruthless) and they were harder than most AVs I've soloed. God those two suck for MMs.

Go solo Bobcat.

Done. Next ?
There's a way to get EBs instead of AVs, it's called "lower your rep". If you can't handle AVs, you're not Invincible or Relentless, so what makes you think you deserve this title ?
*edit* Damn, got tricked. I can't believe the OP really complained it was hard to solo AVs in 2004, with no ED and insane HO values.
Party like its 2004!
Vilest Necromancy!
SMITES!
Threads like this show just how far CoH has come, no more stinking AVs solo!
If you're soloing, you should be on Unyielding or lower. Problem solved as the AV downgrades to an EB.

With the new changes being done to game play in the higher lvls you will want to bring 8 people on those av missions after the next update and expect to have about 2-3 deaths per. The end game has been determined to be to "easy" so its being made harder so if ya had a hard time before with a av your gonna love it now
[/ QUOTE ]
Woohoo, about time they put some challenge back into this game!
Why are there so many outcries to have the hardest difficulty in the game more easy?
If your soloing and you get an AV mission, just lower the difficulty to Unyeilding...I'm having the hardest time trying to understand how people keep forgetting that there are difficulty settings in this game
MOAR AV IN MAH MISH PLS

AV's are intended to be a challenge for several heroes.
