Character : SunRay
Server : All *I have a version of SunRay on em all
Origin : Mutant/Blaster Fire/Fire
Inspirations : As one who has played RPG's since Chainmail, Read my first comic at 2 yrs old, and still plays games, the IDEAs don't stop. Playing Champion's the RPG allowed me to truly create SunRay so many moons ago. Hell, I got a milkcrate FULL of Champion characters. Mine, Others ( We each had a copy of all other 's char, just in case someone didnt show up. The team wasnt hurting and they still got a lil exp. I still have the pencil scarred, drink stained destroyed character sheet for SunRay ) Sunray is me back in the day. I had the Mohawk, 14" tall Double Fin and Blonde. So giving it to my character wasn't too hard. Always wanted to fly, still do. Was so hapyy when I heard of the development of this game. had followed up on all info I could find. The original game design for CoH I remember was more based on the Champions/Hero game system. I was in Heaven. Then I find that it just couldnt work with the way computers work, or something like that. (Not a grammer myself, so I don't really know code.) So it becomes what we play now. Cant say I'm in Heaven, But this game is like CRACK.

I guess I should write up his Bio for all to see. I have mostly played on guardian ( got him up to 21) But that is changing. I'm In It To Win It Baby. Besides work, this is my life. So sad, yet so filling. Taste Great. More Filling. Taste..................................

Hmm. A ton of characters I have, as tends to happen with me, each with their own backgrounds, but there is a certain commonality in inspiration for all of them.

I write fiction as a hobby. My favorite part of such is creating characters and watching them come to life in the story. As such, I am always tinkering with different ideas for characters and the stories they might have to tell... and inspiration rarely comes from any one place but draws from a lot of different sources...

Anyway...
Miss Creant - Claw/Regeneration Scrapper (Mutation Origin)

The primary inspiration for this character was the name. I wanted to create a claw scrapper, and as I was pondering this it occurred to me that the claw type in the game is, well, an extremely vicious weapon, and anyone who would use such a bloody weapon is not likely to be the nicest of individuals, even if he or she is a goodguy. This led me to the name (a pun, of course), and her history and background grew out of that.

Starblade - Energy/Energy Blaster (Science Origin)
Really, this character concept kind of developed even as I was creating (and to an extent, after I created) the character. I knew I wanted to do a science origin for her, but I didn't want it to be an "accident" type origin. However, it can be kind of hard to justify an origin where a character was willingly experimented on... I mean, there are whole ethical concerns and such with that. Well, the answer to this dilemna came to me after I created the character's look. You see, she has a simple costume (very Teen Titans-ish, one of my friends commented), and because of her ponytail hairstyle she looks young. So I started thinking about why a girl her age would have been part of an experimental process that gave her powers... and I came up with the idea of the girl having been a cripple, her metabolism all but shut down by a childhood disease. So this led to the experiment on her (presented to her as an opportunity to cure her disease), and the accidental (or WAS it an accident?) gift of superpowers that came out of this effort. Thus, we have a teenaged girl who six months ago could not even summon the energy to walk more than a few feet at a time, now literally overflowing with energy, flying around, wreaking havoc on the city's villainous population... she's one of my favorite concepts, and I wish I had more opportunity to roleplay with her...

Firedancer - Broadsword/Invulnerability Scrapper (Magic Origin)
This came out of fact that I wanted to generate a broadsword-based hero, but didn't think broadsword seemed like, well, a very superhero-like power. I wanted a character with a superheroic feel, after all. After some discussion with a friend of mine, he pointed out to me that there are a number of sword-wielders in the anime "magical girl" genre and some of its spinoffs. This led me to the idea of a professional demon hunter, who uses magic for her defense and wields a magical sword. She just happens to moonlight as a superhero, because, well... she can.

Dancing Edge - Broadsword/Regeneration scrapper (Mutation Origin)
Getting frustrated with my Broadsword/Invlun scrapper, I decided to build one with Regen. Still, I didn't want to copy my own concept, so I decided to go in a different route. Borrowing an idea from the Externals in the Marvel Universe and adapting it to my needs, I came up with the idea of a mutant whose regeneration power was so strong that it rendered her basically immortal. Her background is still kind of in development in my mind, I'm trying to flesh out the era and part of the world that she grew up in to fill in the details of her history.

Starflash - Radiation/Radiation Defender (Technology Origin)
This is my contribution to the "reluctant hero" genre. Well, she's not really reluctant... but she feels unworthy of the power she wields. You see, Starflash is a physicist, a member of a team of scientists and engineers who worked to develop a powersuit which could take down even the most powerful criminals in a nonlethal manner. However, the team and their benefactor did not feel that such power should be given to someone who would not appreciate the magnitude of it and the responsibilities that went along with it... so the decision was made that one of their number would be the hero. By vote, they settled on this young woman because she was the youngest and most vocally idealistic of the group. In a sense, the inspiration here was that I wanted to do a powersuit type hero in sort of an anime vein... someone who had the high heroic ideals and the desire to do good, but didn't really feel confident in her abilities... or really even know what she was doing at first. She is a character who, to me, has a lot of growth potential to be an interesting person to roleplay. Sadly, I don't get many opportunites to do so.

Liberty Star - Martial Arts/Super Reflexes Scrapper (Natural Origin)
This character is another who was inspired by her name. I actually came up with that name while trying to create a tanker with a patriotic theme... after trying some fifty-some-odd patriotic names, I finally found one that wasn't taken. I later scrapped the tanker, but decided I could have fun with a scrapper with the same name. As I was pondering her background, a sort of interview-question popped in my mind.

"So... Liberty Star. Obviously, you have the patriotic theme going. Where did you come up with the name?"

"My birth certificate."

Thus, Liberty Star is actually her REAL name, not her superhero name. I think we can see what might have led her to go into the hero business, yes? And her backstory just grew out of that.

And last (for now), but not least...
Selyana Storm - Dark Melee/Regeneration Scrapper (Natural Origin)
This is another one that grew out of the nature of her power. I wanted to try Dark Melee, but I am not a real fan of antiheroic types (even Miss Creant is more heroic than she would like to admit!). Since Dark Melee is very martial-arts-like (not like CoH MA, but the fact that it's a hand-to-hand style), I came up with the idea that she had mastered some sort of ki manipulation technique that drew the evil out of her enemies and used it against them. It's sort of an odd concept with a definite anime feel to it. Of course, with a background like that, she couldn't really be a "superhero", so she ended up just being someone who couldn't sit back and watch the city fall apart around her anymore... she had to do something with the power she had.

Anyway, that's where my multitude came from...

Character Name: The Book
Server: Guardian
Details: This time (unlike Perlarosero), my character is a slight mockery of what I am and what I love. The Book is a hunter after occult and supernatural mystery, he is a defender of mortals and innocent spirits from the predation of diabolic cults and harmful magic; but none of that is parody. The parody is in his background. The date of his creation is the date of my birth.

The fact that he fought a "Television Rakshasa Bacteria" is a combination of elements that I vied with in my childhood: a consuming love for television (Sid & Marty Croft Productions being highly valued, along with Warner Bros. cartoons that evidently few other mortals have seen or mentioned in official listings), frequent dehabilitating illnesses leading to temporary hallucination and bizarre ideations, and a reoccuring fear that the world being a shapechanging creature composed of all objects and creatures therein.

The Book is made of paper, very lightweight, and as such is conceptually prone to being knocked around: of course, his stuff is very tough (also conceptual), and malleable. I've always been a bit of a paperweight myself.

Also, The Book's Praetorian nemesis, The Words of Teeth (?), is a carnivorous text construct that is used by the Circle of Thorns (and quite possibly others) as a mercenary to hunt people and devour their bodies, and pronounce the ritual of final destruction and death to their souls thereafter. In its offtime, it is a corporate entertainment software administrator and author of many fine books on ceramic craft and histories of material technologies. It ain't a stupid brute.

The idea for the ritual of final death came from an SPI war simulation game called Swords and Sorcery. The idea for a book that devours people is common to my concepts: at its basis is the concept that music and words could devour people.

I'll probably be recreating my old character, Perlarosero, sometime in the future, as a hero again.

[ QUOTE ]
Character Name: Perlarosero
Server: Liberty
Details: What inspired my creation of Perlarosero was the song Dreamweaver and my childhood in Riverside, California. The lovely process of storytelling and the play of make-believe was still alive in that time; often there were frightening stories of the old mission in the city, and occult rituals taking place there. Also, there was happier stories, such as the invisible castles atop each hill around the city that would only come into being once a century, and only for a week. Perlarosero is a guardian of dreams, and his name is Esperanto for "Pearl Dew" after the Cocteau Twins song, "Pearly Dewdrops Drops".

Dreamweaver is Gary Wright's song, and the Cocteau Twins are a subculture rarity from the eighties, very popular among the alternative crowd back then.

Like many, I was into RPG's long before this whole MMO thing started... but when it did, wham! there went my free time. Used to play a lot of Marvel Super Heroes (omg someone mentioned the Evil Empire in this thread, BURN HIM!!) but that went by the wayside when I discovered Rifts.

Anyways, to the characters:

Doc Mayhem (mutant scrapper, katana and dark armor) - This is actually a bit of an inside joke, as far as the character is concerned. He's a 50-something ex-hippie with the ability to channel the Darkforce, and a LOT of Kendo training. Very much a dichotomy type character - usually very mellow, almost pacifistic... but at the same time, willing to 'kick [censored] and chew bubblegum' when the need arises.

Soulll Trainn (science mutated Defender, kinetics and energy powers) - Imagine Aretha Franklin's attitude, Grace Jones' physique, and a playbook straight out of a bad 70's blaxploitation movie. The 'soul' powers (healing, defense leech, power leech, etc) she uses to keep her and her team standing, and the "train" (force) powers are used to 'knock those no-good punk-*** off the ******* tracks!' She's a bit of a hothead... given a choice between pulling one bad guy with a carefully placed Force Blast, and aggro'ing the whole bunch with a Repeller field (that's her "Soul Train" attack, run through them with Repel up and send them all flying...) she'll aggro everybody! She's got a heart of gold, but a WHOLE lotta attitude!

Mistress Ohm (Tech blaster, Elec/Elec) - This is what happens when you take an extremely bright and playful young lady, and outfit her with some SERIOUS toys. Her motto: "Resistance is... Interesting!" (Think certain fetishes... she could very easily be a villain, if she wasn't such a good person at heart. She DOES enjoy tormenting thugs though... "I'm sorry, sweetie, did I have the TENS unit turned up too high??") Haven't done much thinking as to why she's a hero instead of a dilletante... mostly she's into the whole vigilante business because, well, it beats testing devices under ... laboratory... conditions... besides which, once her fellow grad students found out WHAT she was building and monkeying around with, she ran short of 'volunteers'...

"Oh well, I guess we'll just have to test the superconducter wristbands out on some punk stealing purses!!" -giggling-

RPing can be fun, but a lot of people either think it is funny or strange...Perhaps I need to find different people. One example is a small constuct I had, who was just gaining sentience(as part of background) but only could communicate in binary. Which I did...
I was on a team or two. One group thought it was funny, the other group got mad. go figure. I personally prefer to RP than not, otherwise it is more like a shoot'em game...which I dont like...

One hopes you used a few emotes along with the 0's and 1's... oh wait, just achieved sentience... emotional responses? Uh, nevermind.

Still, would be interesting to try and roleplay chars that had 'interesting' speech patterns or whatnot. I suppose you'd have to be in with a very patient and understanding group to maintain it tho', esp. if you didn't have Teamspeak or some other voice chat app.

I used to be an avid (or rabid) RIFTS player myself. I still try and collect the first editions when possible. I tend to keybind roleplaying type responses for my characters and use them at hopefully appropriate times and not try to spam the heck out of my team. With judicous use I usually get a LOL and an occasional ROFL.

Character Name: The Black Beetle
Server: Justice
Archetype: Scrapper (Dark/Reg)
Inspiration: I'll admit it. My original idea was a joke character to play around with Dark Melee. I wanted to make a crazy hispanic dude who ran around screaming BEETLEEEEEE and talking in third-person. Think of Speedy Gonzolas. But over time the idea developed into a dark Batman-esque character seeking revenge, but with superpowers. But still Hispanic and on the verge of insanity, for kicks. =P

Character Name: Magnamerica (old alt)
Server: Justice
Archetype: Tanker (Inv/SS)
Inspiration: This one is pretty cookie-cutter. The generic strong, handsome (OK, that's pushing it), kind-hearted patriotic dude with stars all over his costume. I think I was reading an issue of The Ultimates and admiring Captain America's concept when I created him. He was one of my first characters and still sits on the top of my Justice roster today, collecting dust. The generic concept got booooooring.

Character Name: Red Hot Beetle
Server: Justice... again
Archetype: Tanker (Fire/Ice)
Inspiration: The son of Black Beetle, etc. Came out pretty easy. Why did I put this one here? O.x

Character Name: Ozi
Server: Liberty
Archetype: Mutant Energy / Energy Blaster
Inspiration: Ozi is a modified version of a character of a sci-fi character I had when I was playing RIFTS, he was a mutant then too (though he had martial arts abilities as well as energy powers ) but the memories of his past were slightly fried in a fight with a very powerful enemy. This splintering of his thoughts caused him to develop a darker aspect of his peronality which changes his outer appearance to a more monsterous form. He has three costumes, his first one is his "space hero" costume, the second is just a suit he wears when hes tryin to look GQ, and the third is the monsterous form (which im workin on) He's also sort of inspired by Predator, or rather my tactics with him are, I like using the stealth approach teleporting around the battle field sniping teleporting away invisible I just wish some of his energy blasts came from his eyes...

Character Name: Sentinel Dragon
Server: Liberty
Archetype: Mutant MA / SR scrapper
Inspiration: Wuxia and hong kong cinema, power rangers, and anime (and one DANG good bottle of rum) were all in effect when i created this character. Though I ended up liking him so much I didnt delete him, heck I changed my forum name from LoneRonin to SentinelDragon I liked him so much. Im going to work a bit on his origion, because i gave him the generic govt agent treatment and it doesnt seem to fit him.

Character Name: not known yet... or rather im not saying so it doesnt get jacked
Server: Liberty
Archetype: Mutation, defender Trick arrows / archery
Inspiration: A little bit of Bobba Fett, a little bit of green arrow, a little bit of Predator. This will be my "ruthless vigilante" character.

Name: Stacked Deck

Archetype: MA/SR Scrapper
Origin: Natural

Okay, I'm a little embarassed to admit this, but...I actually created this guy's costume before the character himself. Although that probably explains why he's the character of mine who is most often complimented on his costume in-game. Most of the toons I'd created (and, more often than not, deleted) by that point were not terribly striking visually, nor did they feel particularly super-heroish. I'm really pleased with how he's worked out so far. My inspirations while creating him are so eccentric and varied that I'm concerned about posting the entire creative process involved, but suffice it to say that I think the cape really solidified the feel of the character for me, although it was still an awesome-looking costume beforehand!

Character Name: unknown right now
Server: Liberty
Archetype: Katana / Super Reflexes scrapper (or maybe a Inv / Em tanker not sure yet)
Inspiration: Actually basing this off of the character for the series of short stories and eventual novel im writing about a 23rd century Bounty Hunter / Private investigator, its going to be along the lines of a cross between Blade Runner and Rorouni Kenshin, Ninja scroll and Raiders of the lost ark with a little bit of Heavy Gear thrown in. (Concepts borrowed not ripped off, im virulently against plagarism of creative content, and cat juggling) He's a bit of an urban samurai whos generally good natured, a smart mouth and isnt concerned much about the world picture and is more about the little people.

Character Name: The Aether Dynamo
Server: Guardian
Archetype: Tech Defender (Kin/elec)
Inspiration: I usually base my characters off the powers available. I pick two power sets i like then make my character fit thosen parameters with a cool concept. In this case this guy started out simply as a guy who could control magnetism and stuff. Aether Dynamo was just a cool name i had thought of since most of my original names had been taken. Aether is like a mystic, kind of unexplained energy and I thought it'd be cool if his powers kind of involved controlling this strange energy. I didn't think much of a background at a time since i was making a buch of other characters like him at the time too. However most of those burned out and were deleted while this guy was put in storage for awhile. Then a few months ago my friend finally got his own game account and i started playing with him and i figured i'd use aether as a temp character while we waited for my other friends to get the game. However soon it became clear that we were spending most of our time with these characters and they soon became our mains. And as i played i began to develop my characters background to synergize with the world around him. His cool suit developed as a nano-bots that had been injected into his body to allow him his fantastic powers, which developed into more like energy siphoned and converting than direct magnetics. These nano-bots played even further into his story as i developed him as a scientist who had worked for crey and then had had his arm shut off when he refused to cooperate with them. His one arm had always looked different than the other, so i thought it'd be right to explain it. And as i got even further into the game i worked my friend into to be the person who'd saved me after i'd been shot and had nursed me back to health. From there we became inseparable friends and partners, which reflected our play experience, as the two of us have leveled since level 1 together. So overall my main character started as a souless secondary character who involved into a cool and interesting character, simply because i played him alot.

Character Name:Haywire

Server: Protector

Archetype:Scrapper

Inspiration: I knew I needed a cool name for my tech hero, and Haywire jumped to mind. I designed the character around the name. He's a cyborg with a robot personality along with the human one. The robot one is, of course, insane. Yeah, it's not an amazing inspiration, but it made a pretty cool hero.

Heck, reading X_Sunray_X post was like reading my own story but with only a few modifications... so that said.. go to the top of the page and read about him so you know me and come back

Second character was Agent Hooper, no previous planning just kind of went with the flow of what sounded good or didnt as I made the character. Being new to the system I didn't want to get caught not being able to make what I wanted. My favorite character of all time I could never make in CoH because of the limitation on teleport - I will never be able to reproduce his powers. Anyway, I went with natural because the descriptions of all the other types didnt set with me right. I kind of had a Mafia mentality when I put him together (and this was before I knew about the Family). It did take much to build up a "natural" back ground for him which I have only modified once to cover the speed running which I only picked so I could get around better.

Dont have time to cover other two characters well but I can quickly say The Goblin King was a super hero I made for Champions so his bio was pretty solid. I just wrote a couple pages describing his entrance to Paragon but I'm not done so it won't be posted yet. Pheonix Arcanum is my healer which I made because I like playing supporting characters and healers seemed to be in high demand. His back ground came as he was created.

Character Name: The Elysienne
Server: Virtue
Archetype: Controller - Mind Control/Empathy
Inspiration: Okay, so I was stepping off the train after coming home from work and I guess I was in a bit of an odd mood. I'd been playing City of Heroes for a little while and was idly tossing character ideas about in my head. When I came out of the train station the war monument for local soldiers who died in World War 1 and 2 caught my eye. It was up on a hill and stood out on the horizon, and from thereon in I started developing an idea about a medium who got connected with the spirits of the local dead. At length, that evolved into a character who was anchored to fifty or so dead men from the first and second World Wars who could rely on them to disorient his opponents by bombarding them with their living memories. Someone once described it as "using shell-shock as a weapon." The character itself was still giving me some problems until I'd created my male character and went to enter the city as "The Elysian." Of course, the name was taken.

Curses! I tried a couple of other permutations on the theme.. still slapped down... until I thought to myself "Well, I can always alter the model... make it a female." And added a femenine "-enne" sound on the end instead.

From thereon in, every aspect of the character suddenly fell in place.

So... I guess my inspiration was some local statury, some local heroes and a whole bundle of luck.

Character: Sgt. "Rock" Ready
Server: Virtue
Archetype: Science Tanker
Inspiration: Sgt. Brock "Rock" Ready is, at his core, everything I am not. He's gigantic; I'm bookish. He's loud, crass and crude; I'm quiet, tasteful and observant of decorum. He's basically the repressed parts of me, electronically brought to giant, hulking life.
But that's what's so fun about him - he actually is me. It's just the parts that I choose to keep quiet. It's easy to RP him because I don't have to think "what would he do?" It's already right there for me.
It's funny - he's more jingoist than I, but I've given him the same basic political beliefs as myself. He is in love with the idea of America, but chafes under authorities of all kinds. He thinks what's great about America is the freedom to live however you want, so long as you don't hurt anyone else (well, don't hurt them much, in his case). He really is patriotic; he just hates the idea of a government!
If any of you happen to run into Sgt. Ready on Virtue, he's a fun guy, if completely un-PC. The character's only Level 3 right now, but we're working on that.

Welsh

Saeth verch Bwa was born to a passionate Cymraeg Nationalist family. An only child, she grew skilled in all of the abilities valued by her people. She was selected to read her masterpiece poem at the National Eisteddfod in 200x. On her way there, she was ambushed and assaulted by the evil Lord Gordon-Blair. Using the 'Complete Works of Dylan Thomas' as a weapon, she fought off his advances. While they were both trying to recover their breaths, he shot her with his most diabolical device, the Saesnag Ray. The evil beam stripped away almost all of her language skills, her ability to harmonize, her cooking skills with mild onions, her magical ability to create and recite poetry and to mine coal. Ok, so perhaps the latter was of not much use, but nonetheless he had no right to deprive her of it as it was part of her heritage.

Since that awful day, Saeth has forsworn poetry and has developed her skills with a part of her heritage the evil English aristocrat could not remove, archery. She still tries to use her native language as much as possible, but is painfully aware that her mutations and declensions are wonky, she's lost almost all of her vocabulary and she can't conjugate to save her life anymore.

Well The First name I used was Desdinova for a character on Triumph that Had become unplayable due to bad power selections and I eventually deleted her at Lvl 21, I did attempt to re create the character on Justice but was Told the name Desdinova (lifted from a Blue Oyster Cult Song called Astronomy) was not availible, so I morphed it into Desi Nova. as for my Most Recent Alexandr Gemini I was inspired by another Song, Cassandra Gemini by a group called Mars Volta, only thing is I wanted to create a male character. I thought Alexander Sounded Exotic enough, and space Limitations is what caused it to become Alexandr

Archetype: Magic Tanker (Firey Aura/Battle Axe)

Inspiration: Believe it or not, this character sprang into being from a list of random names generated at Seventh Sanctum. I was playing around with one of the generators, 'Infernotaur' sprang up, and the rest was history.

I do have other characters, it's just that this one is the only one with an 'interesting' creation/origin idea.

Character Name: Starfire-One
Server: Justice
Archetype: Blaster (Energy Blast/Energy Manipulation)
Inspiration: Role-playing character originally made in 1986.

Brief Explanation or a link to my origin:
Jason Ellenburg was born and raised in Paragon City’s Outbreak neighborhood. He was just a normal kid in high school when his life was changed forever. During a fight in school, he let out a punch sheathed in pure energy; his mutation surfaced. He was immediately transferred into the Special Heroic Education Program. He graduated high school with honors, but he did not however, register as a hero. He just wanted to live a normal life… then the Rikti invaded. He was forced to use his powers to defend his neighborhood from the onslaught. In the fighting he was struck down and almost killed. It was by luck that Hero 1 flew by and rescued him. In that moment, he realized his true potential, the reason he was given his powers. Whether he wanted it or not, the mantle of Hero had been laid upon him. After the Rikti were defeated Paragon City opened itself to heroes. Jason registered as a hero that very day. He took the name Starfire-One (in memory Hero 1’s sacrifice). In a City of Heroes, he is a Hero!

Brief Explanation or a link to my origin:
Gary Andrews always believed that the only way to better his surroundings was to better himself. He applied this fact to everything he did. He was an all-state sports star and perfect student. When he graduated he surprised everyone when he turned down several scholarships to major universities and went into the Army. He graduated at the top of his class in training and was stationed in Paragon City. When the Rikti invaded, Gary was on the front lines. Throughout the war, he earned more medals than most companies. Then tragedy struck. In the final days of the war, he came under fire from a new kind of weapon. It shifted him out of reality and into a mirror world. He could view everyday life, but only from behind the mirrors. Rather than go insane from isolation, he found and learned the training secrets of Statesman. When Portal Corp went online, Gary was pulled back through into Paragon City. He registered as Flag-Waver (a synonym of Statesman). He has been Through the Looking Glass but is now here to stay!

Brief Explanation or a link to my origin:
Tonya Teusaw was a scientist in Portal Corp before the Rikti Invasion. When they first opened their portals, it caused a rupture which sucked Tonya through to an unknown dimension, the Shadow Shard. She was found by a Rularuu scout group and taken to the Storm Palace. There, she was interrogated and tortured. When the Rularuu learned of Paragon City, and the heroes defending it, they devised a plan to use Tonya as a weapon against them. Her body and mind was twisted and warped into the perfect weapon. She became a creature who uses the very shadows to fight. When the time was right, the Rularuu invaded. Tonya, now called Tesserak by her cruel masters, was the first through. As she entered Paragon City, though, she turned on her captors. Rather than fight with the Rularuu, she fought against them. She joined the heroes that day to repell the threat to the city, and vowed to repell every threat facing Paragon City. Tonya is no more, but Tesserak is here. A Shadow of the Past here to protect the future!
