  1. I agree with so many of these posts I don't even know where to begin!

A permanent AP33 on my home server of Virtue- check! A lifetime sub for TonyV- check! Random hero dopplegangers with torches outside Atlas' City Hall- check!

And more Paragon Studios developer presence in-game here and there, just to say hello- check!
  2. All right now, peeps! It ain't over til the fat lady sings as they say, and I don't hear any singing! The spotlight won't even be shining on that stage until November 30th, so pull together here.

Hellgate: London closed down and came back online. Gods and Heroes closed down came back online. APB and Fallout went under and came back online. CoH only has to be the next one to do it--but this time we're aiming to drag Paragon Studios along for the ride.

So get to it! Send those three emails out to the NCSoft Head Honchos in TonyV's thread there. Go go go!

You don't know until you try. And wouldn't you rather go out, guns blazing, knowing you did everything you possibly could to save CoH, rather than wondering that it might have been saved if not for your lack of trying in the end?

Sharpen those katanas and broadswords, mix up some new spells, un-holster those wild western pistols-- we have only just begun to fight!

The CoH community is largely comprised of older, more responsible players to begin with. And if we don't keep the pressure up and fast, Paragon Studios is going to vanish into the ether. Do you even want a CoH not run, maintained and expanded upon by the people who made it what it is? Do you have any idea how hard it is for a given dev team to pick up another dev team's code and keep any semblance of it running let alone with the same personality, polish and professionalism we've already got?

I say go for it. Speak from the heart, don't go off the deep end, and do it NOW. Before they block or change emails.
  4. Okay, I sent this out to all three of them:

    Dear Sir,

I am sorry to bother you, but after two weeks of constant media attention concerning NCSoft’s impending closure of City of Heroes, NCSoft has still made no public response or alternative offer to continue on with the CoH franchise via sale to another publisher, so here I am.

I just want you to know that eleven people in my family have all played City of Heroes for over eight years since it has launched. Three generations of gamers in my family (grandparents, kids, cousins and grandkids) have found an online game like no other that allows us endless customization and role-play opportunities, as well as endless content to enjoy together. Not to mention that the community in CoH is outstanding and we team with pickup groups there and make new friends constantly!

Please consider selling the City of Heroes IP to another publisher or investor and quickly, before the Paragon Studios developers find other jobs and the team is lost forever.

It is apparent through the world news that Korea’s MMORPG business is in an upheaval and beyond that, since Nexon’s 14.7% stock buyout, you need to focus your energies on what they want too. But please don’t forget the thousands of North Americans and Europeans who have paid you for eight years to play your game. If it gets shut down permanently, they have nothing to show for all those years of time and money spent.

And also do not forget NCSoft’s prior history of game shut-downs: Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, Dungeon Runners, Exteel, etc. I’m sorry to say your company is getting a bad reputation for not supporting your multiplayer games in North America and Europe, and I wouldn’t be surprised if all the negative media attention concerning City of Heroes’ closure hurts Blade & Soul’s sales here.

I am trying to be reasonable, especially in light of the fact that CoH’s closure and Paragon Studios’ layoffs occurred *after* Guild Wars 2 had already launched—largely seen here as a way to avoid a boycott of the game by City of Heroes players.

Please reconsider killing off City of Heroes: At this point that means selling the IP, game, servers and accounts/cash shop or as much of the game as humanely possible to another publisher. The new publisher would get a built-in loyal fan base of players right away, and NCSoft would get some much-needed (especially in light of Blade & Soul’s impending release here) good publicity.

    Thank you for your time,

    Denice Cook and family
    Devoted City of Heroes fans

And that would be just another log on the fire.
Log in the fire...hehe. Yeah, for sure on that.

But the super secret project looks to have been an unannounced strategy war game for iOS, Android and PC. Tim Sweeny was lead designer for it from Jan. 2012 til the shutdown, which is mentioned in his LinkedIn profile. Cryptic still appears to have licensed the CoH engine for use "in perpetuity" though (according to BABs/Tic Toc on these forums) and I think it was mentioned as being ok'd for potential use in CoH2 if there ever had been a call for that.

But I'll just be happy if NCSoft comes to their senses and sells the CoH IP really soon, Paragon Studios intact as much as possible.

The old girl still has a lot of life left in her, and there are still a good amount of people playing (I'm on Virtue and it's often downright crowded)...much moreso than in most of the other MMOs out there, I'll tell you that. And they're all still running! And I've tried a lot of 'em, so I should know.
  6. Hehe, right when I read your thread title I giggled. Thanks for the smile.
  7. Permadeath toons are buggers. It's Hardcore Mode from Diablo. It's like walking on eggshells.

Um, I don't know exactly where you've been hiding, Van Raye, but the entire CoH community has been mobilized and highly active in many more ways than you're even suggesting since August 31st when NCSoft announced the abrupt shutdown of PS and CoH.

So welcome to the party....Better late than never, but why act like everyone's ignoring your ideas here when they've been going for weeks before you even got here?

If you look over the earnings statements of that time, they were still expecting Guild Wars 2 to launch by the end of 2011.

Once again: blaming Blade and Soul's launch for the closure of City of Heroes is just plain wrong.
Personally, I don't particularly blame any one game, but NCSoft has burned too many MMO bridges for me to ever invest money in them again.

If there's anything timing-wise that I think was particularly sleazy of them, though, it's that they waited until the week after GW2's early start (the first launch wave) and then several days after the official launch to drop the bomb about CoH.

Now THAT was manipulative, and was aimed at one thing: wringing as much money as they could off unsuspecting gamers who might otherwise have boycotted had they known about CoH sooner.

I for one would not have bought GW2 had I known they were going to shutter CoH. Not to mention that they were the rudest of brutes about it in the way they blindsided Paragon Studios in the middle of an expansion and new power set/etc. on test, and pink-slipped them all out of nowhere besides.
  10. I just came upon one of two threads in The Secret World's forums about CoH's closure. In threads like this one: http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=56949 people are pretty much to the point of not investing money into NCSoft anymore because of how many of their MMOs they have shuttered.

Their reputation is in the toilet. I just question that they're so far removed from us globally and could care less about the west anyway to the point that they may never even recognize what is going on here. I mean, otherwise they would have stepped up to the microphone long ago, you know? Their whole credo seems to be "slash ignore."

    2195 Days Later

Yup, I've got lowbie toons I haven't played in ages that I've been playing today, too!

    Great minds think alike.

And I've had so much fun that I can't believe they went by the wayside to begin with. I have 5 level 50s, a 46 and a bunch in the 30s, too, though, so I guess I just got side-tracked by my high-level characters.

    Blade and Soul

Massively.com has a Blade and Soul article if anyone would like to post in the comments section: http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09...s-headed-west/

Somehow I think NCSoft is more likely to listen to the voices coming out of the general public's areas than on these boards, and in any case it can't hurt to warn new B & S players about what NCSoft is really like.

Though I would say for some of us--myself included--the declaration that we will never buy another NCSoft game is the literal truth. Not even because we're angry, but because we actually can't.

I have a Mac. CoH is the only NCSoft title I can run without an emulator or Boot Camp. Neither is a viable option because I don't own a copy of Windows, and picking one up just to play a free-to-play MMO would not be a wise use of my limited budget.

Reason 2 would be that CoH is the only title NCSoft has that I'm actually interested in. I'm not at all into fantasy RPGs.

I wish Star Trek Online had a Mac version.
Why aren't you dual booting with Windows on your Mac as well then?
  14. Well, for one thing, NCSoft would keel over and die before it would ever bother to check these forums. Puh-lease. If they read them with any regularity whatsoever, they wouldn't have axed our favorite game in the first place.

And for another, how do you even know "delicate negotiations" or any negotiations whatsoever are still underway? Most of the Paragon Studios peeps openly appear to be looking for different employment in LinkedIn. Sorry, I peeked in there, because I wanted to know what kind of a chance we really had here of ever seeing CoH and Paragon Studios brought together once more by another publisher.

I hope like heck it's going to happen; I'm still hoping against hope, believe me!

But from what I can gather, the past tense is creeping in over there, and PS is a tight-knit, positive group that is spending the bulk of its time recommending each former member for new employment with glowing reviews.

    *crosses fingers*

I think the best chance we really have is the more mainstream press places that we've already been hitting, if we want NCSoft to notice anything. The sites that cover many different games and issues show that the gaming populace at large is kicking and screaming, instead of just this rather small but devoted group of current VIPs seen on these forums here. I mean, they're going to expect us here to be upset, just not the gaming world at large. So I doubt they're even looking here in the first place is my point.

I hope everybody who's got a couple minutes is posting in that thread and telling potential Blade and Soul customers exactly what awaits them down the road regarding NCSoft.

Haha, two thumbs up for this post.

The first thing I thought of when I heard CoH was being shut down was,

"Okay, Kim whoever, don't bother even launching Blade and Soul here in North America."

And I'm not just saying that because I want to boycott them out of spite. Korea is just too far removed from us (and Europe for that matter). It shows in NCSoft's horrid handling of other games like Aion and the Lineage series as well. They just can't deal with it all. Aion's servers are a lag fest and people d/c constantly, with PvP fort sieges resetting all the while, not to mention the chats are completely overrun with unobstructed gold spam, and the same goes for Lineage.

Not to mention that if I was an original Guild Wars player, I'd be awfully nervous right about now too. Their account login system didn't port over to the new system, either. (Aion and Lineage 2 did, but CoH and GW1 didn't. See a pattern of plans developing there?)

I don't know if anyone else did this too, but during the CoV beta, I requested that the electrical power set's secondary effect be changed from the buggy mob endurance drain that originally existed to giving the player a little endurance back instead before they ported electrical powers over to the villain side.

That, and I was one of those recommending that ice brutes get removed from CoV because the ice's slowing effect on the mobs prevented fury from building up properly.

  18. Oops, I didn't see there already was a thread about this.
  19. Massively.com put up a poll about CoH: You vote whether you'd like to save it or let it die. Please vote to save our city! You never know when all this internet noise is going to make a dent in NCSoft.

  20. The Keep CoH Alive petition is at 15,796 right now.

    http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...f-heroes#intro

Please spread the word to anyone who hasn't already signed on the dotted line so to speak to do it ASAP! That number needs to keep going up, up, up!
  21. I didn't even try logging on, even though Virtue is my home server. My PC is on the older side and I know the lag would just kill it.

But know my little fist is waving into the air right along with y'all.

    CoX Emu anyone?

This is really a last-ditch plan Z thing that you don't really do until the game has been shut down permanently with absolutely no hope of its ever seeing the legitimate light of day again.

I don't think anybody suggesting amateur Emu stuff has the vaguest idea of how difficult and daunting such a project really would be, never mind how crappy and buggy and inferior it always is to pro code by real developers with professional backing.

And it costs an awful lot for how crappy it is.

Yeah, SWG has had one, for six years now supposedly, and it's still in a horrid state of beta and due for a complete nuking (characters and all) very soon. At least that's what a little birdie who actually bothers with that kind of stuff told me the other day. It's rather a disaster area.

It would be like turning Gone with the Wind into Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I'd kinda rather remember CoH as the proud, professional being it was than watch it degraded like that to be honest.

But I still think there's hope for both Paragon Studios and CoH to pass the torch into capable hands publisher-wise. And NCSoft is in enough chaos right now, financial and otherwise, not to mention that their public image has taken such a beating over the years, that they just may do it. They were actually amenable to selling Auto Assault back to Net Devil, they just couldn't secure the financing for it.

I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but it is possible.
  23. Er, how does Paragon Studios feel about this program?

And if another pro publisher bought out the IP and PS, I would think they would not allow character imports due to both the potential for hacking and the fact that those who didn't use it would be starting from scratch, which would make for extremely imbalanced new servers both team-wise and economy-wise. Newbies wouldn't stand a chance in the market.

    I'd like Zwill's and Positron's/War Witch's/other PS's take on this.
  24. Thanks, Zwill!

You're awesome. My yearly sub renews October 10th, and I would gladly pay for the extra 50 days until shutdown if I could (if that's what happens).

It was quite upsetting to think that, after always having VIP status here on the forums and in-game, it would be taken away suddenly just when all of us need it most.

Thanks again for your time and dedication. We do notice and appreciate it.

    The Last Day

Hopefully Z or somebody will at least be able to release a final Giant Monster swarm in Atlas Park.

And I have decided that, chosen from all my 50s, I'm going to be on with All Hallows Eve on Virtue. She's my 50 fire/empathy troller. And I am going to continue to lock down those monsters, heal and buff and rez against all the odds, and keep every hero able to fight the good fight until that very last second when the lights go out for good....

And if Paragon Studios is somehow, some way able to rez the servers, even if only a couple of them, and even if they're empty of data and have to be filled up once again from scratch.... All Hallows Eve is going to be the first one I re-roll.

Hey, no one will have any influence. They'll need all the buffs and crowd control they can get. :P
