I've seen this from a couple of different people, but it's such a good idea that I'm going to be disappointed if it doesn't happen.
-
I would classify this as almost a necessity. You might decide to buy 10 new pieces if the theme sounds good, but how many are going to buy an individual piece without seeing it?
-
And, given the fact that this change is happening, the trial accounts didn't have their desired effect. I certainly can't prove that the change in communication is what caused the trial accts to be ineffective at bringing in new people, but I certainly would not point to them as a success, given the fact that they didn't work.
-
So, new people teaming and enjoying themselves will drive away existing players? Those are some pretty lousy existing players.
-
Quote:So what. If their purpose is to "give people what they pay for", then they wouldn't be going free-to-play in the first place. They are advertising. The purpose of the free-to-play model is to get more people to try it out, and then to have those people want to give the company money in exchange for stuff.New players are not severely limited under the new business plan, just the people who don't want to spend a dime.
If they simply buy the cheapest item in the Paragon Store they are automatically upgraded to a Premium account and get all the benefits a Premium player gets.
Ya gets what ya pay for, TANSTAAFL.
So, no matter how much the model succeeds at "giving people what they pay for", if it doesn't also succeed at showing these free people positive and enticing experiences, then it will have failed at it's purpose of attracting new money-bearing people.
You seem more concerned with what is "fair" than with what will actually perform a useful function for the business. -
Quote:Mainly because it's not true. They did a great improvement by making fitness inherent, but low level, 1-2 attacks, no vet attacks, lack of inf to buy even the minimally useful TO enhancements, it is going to be largely the game it was 7 years ago. Lots of standing and waiting and whiffing.Soloing in this game is awesome - completely unparalleled. No MMO delivers the solo game this game does - none of them are even remotely close. I cannot understand why so many people cannot grasp that concept.
Virtually every MMO in existence provides a superior solo experience for low level character even if it abandons that the higher you get. Even back as far as EQ, the low level solo experience was viable and enjoyable, even though it totally disappeared for most characters between levels 6 and 10. If we're looking at levels 1-10, the solo experience in this game is not exceptional in any way compared to most other MMOs. To claim otherwise is a case of looking at the game through rose-colored glasses. -
Quote:But even with those things listed, new players are not severely limited in experiencing the game. Large amounts of gold are more important later in the game than for beginning characters. Leveling past 10 is obviously a later concern. Talking to people and grouping is something that affects you the first instant to log into the game. It is a bad first impression as opposed to a limitation that hits you later only after you have been hooked. So what?
I'm an F2P player on one game that prevents me from leveling past 10.
I'm an F2P player on two other games that put a severe limit on how much gold a character can carry as opposed to the VIPs who can have unlimited wealth.
Our F2P model doesn't do either so ours is no better or worse than others in the industry. -
Quote:Wrong. In that dragon game, free players have zone broadcast ability and the ability to send tells. Not to mention the vastly superior tool to assist in finding groups in the first place, so even if they did hinder communication to the same degree, it would still be better than what free players here are going to get.Our F2P restrictions are no more or less limiting than the restrictions other MMO's that have gone F2P have and they have plenty of free players and their games suck compared to CoH.
And for new players without a group, this game is going to suck incredibly bad. -
Quote:For free players, it's going to be their only option. This is really bothering me. If I were to start playing this game knowing nothing about it, then upon making a character, I found I had no tools at my disposal to form a group or do anything other than stand around (probably under a statue in Atlas) and use local chat to locate people, it would not make me enjoy the game. After having been playing on Freedom for awhile I notice that the Help channel over there is filled with LF team/trial/tf already. This can become problematic soon.
The free version of the game is one that you would have to pay me to play. I fail to see how it will be an effective advertisement for the game. After that pathetic sample experience, why would anyone decide to give the company money? -
Yea, sounds like a bug. The only time you should lose pets like that is if your level drops (for instance if the leader switched to someone lower level, but even then it wouldn't happen mid-mission.)

Real travel powers have several advantages compared to ninja run.
Superjump - significantly faster
fly - 3d movement
superspeed - faster and stealth
teleport - move out of caltrops, also fastest
All of the real travel powers also have the ability to slot IOs. These include stealth (which when added to the superspeed stealth makes you functionally invisible), knockback resistance, and slow resistance.
Ninja run gives you an option if you are stretched for power choices, but travel powers are useful abilities that normally don't require additional slots. -
Quote:While good, that doesn't address if you will still be able to buy up to the current max. "You can keep what you have bought" is not the same as "you will be able to buy".
It seems like a no-brainer that you would be able to buy up to the same, current max, but ***-u-me and all that. -
I don't know how, but I have a feeling they are going to try to do with detention field/intang what electric control did with sleep - take something worthless and make it useful.
EDIT: also, I keep seeing people mention time/DP. What cultural reference am I missing? -
Apparently some people have 20-30 more inspiration slots than those of us limited to the normal 4X5.
No, really, on an even level mission solo vs Arachnos, I get held every single spawn. Sometimes it takes me long enough to kill everything that I can get held again after eating a break free.
If the ability of the character to run a normal, even level mission X1 is dependent on having an endless supply of multiple different types of inspirations, then I think it's safe to say that the character is not independent or self-reliant.
I'm not saying they should be. I only responded to the guy who said that all characters at 50 should be independent. That's a tall order when certain powersets were clearly not created with that in mind. You, you might be able to pull it off by going villain (for the shield) and spending a couple of billion inf, but it's not something that should be expected of every level 50. -
Well, if you are looking at the comparison chart, it doesn't even say 12+purchased. It just says 12. I assume that means they need to smack the proofreaders, but who knows.
Either way, I'm redeeming my purchased, but unused slots as soon as I get home. No sense in taking a chance. Hell, I might even go ahead and max out the slots on my home server just in case. Better a few bucks wasted than getting screwed in the future by bad dev choices. -

Stubbing your toe hurts if you have nothing to compare it to, but is downright pleasant compared to a kick in the balls.

One problem is that if there is any type of buy in ("click here to use auto teaming function"), then people will simply not use it. I've been on looking for a group and not been able to get a response, but I've also been on and gotten a half dozen messages within seconds of asking. In both cases, there was no one marked as looking for a group using the search functionality. To state again - the system we already have in place where someone can passively mark themselves as willing to group without taking any initiative whatsoever is already too much effort for most people.

No matter how much tech advances, it will always advance faster on a larger machine that produces more heat. The limitations on the desktop now have more to do with what people will pay and will accept in terms of size and inconvenience than with what is possible with current tech.
So, no matter what advances we make, compared to a desktop machine, a tablet will have worse graphics; be able to handle fewer objects onscreen at one time (see trial lag); have slower, less precise controls; will have fewer control options; and will have an overall smaller screen with less virtual real estate.
So, I think you can hold off on predictions of tablet CoH until the average player doesn't have a better video card he'd like to buy and we have 200 people fighting in a rikti raid with no lag. Until then, the desktop will lead the way in quality and the tablet will bring up the rear with "what's the bare minimum people will accept." -
