Quote:well, we dont know for sure, but it strongly was suggested that we are fighting the praetorian hami. it would seem to follow the last few issues that we will be getting some content involving fighting him and maybe a zone, just like first and night ward. I dunno if it will be a full zone, given that they are also supposedly doing a zone revamp, im wondering how many resources they have to make another zone, but they have been surprising me lately. It seems likely we will get some bridging content up closer to the highest levels. also, while it gets repetitive, there are repeatable contacts, i know im doing that now in first ward, saving refugees from dregs and stealing test soldier supplies. as an added bonus, the emperor's sword arc even gives solo advancement options without fighting mot (though fighting mot is kinda pure awesome in its own right).
Dear all,
I am running a little experiment. I enjoyed immensely Praetoria when it was released and I have been delighted by the expansion in lore and zones through First Ward, Night Ward and the iTrials. However, since they revamped the first levels experience in Paragon and the Rogue Isles for CoH Freedom (Sept 2011), I have found myself playing exclusively Hero/Villain content.
After one year, and with the new powersets coming out, I decided to go back to Praetoria and try to stay there as much as possible, without setting foot in Primal Earth. My Water Blast/Time Corruptor named Atlantea has been doing well, she finished all the original Praetorian arcs... it was a quite lonely ride I have to say, I think DBF has killed Praetoria just 1 year after the zones were released. Anyway, staying on topic... I changed sides as many times as possible, and ended being a Resitance member. Funny enough, both sides offered me the final mission to go to Primal Earth (Provost Marchand and Steve Sheridan). I got both for fun, tempted to do first one and go, let’s say villain, then the other and go heroe, to see if I break the server.
Anyway, she didn’t complete any of the two “Cross the Rift thingie” missions because that would break my “only Praetoria experiment”. Instead she went through the Praetorian underground to First Ward and I am getting missions there without problems. Blind Makwa wants me to collect something from some graves (creepy!) that are surrounded by purple enemies. So now I have resorted to the “newspaper” missions from Roadflare to get some levels.
I guess I will have to live in First Ward until I am lvl 30, then I can move to Night Ward... problem is, what to do after finishing Night Ward at lvl 35? Wait in the hope they release new Praetorian content that bridges the gap to lvl 50? Someone knows if I can still go to Primal Earth and join teams for missions? Or do some kind of missions in Primal Earth without being Heroe-Villain/stop being Praetorian, maybe Vanguard ones? Probably I will get stuck and finally go Primal...
I am wondering if anyone has done something similar before and what have been their experiences.
Cheers
@Arda

also, for me, the grapple to kick move from super double dragon. I used that move with that specifically in mind.

Quote:well, not to be picky, but wrong animation replace, the horrid roundhouse kick was always that power, the hook kick combo was replaced with a jumping inside kick. and really i wouldnt worry about that happening too often, that was a long time ago before "power spectrum" and alt animations. the tech just wasn't there pre babs having the time and additional support to redo the system. these days a full animation would be very unlikely to ever fully vanish, because they now have tools that they previously didn't.I just hope that with this change to the power in the power pool.......they let players who already have the old power...keep that old power.
Because when they changed Storm Kick...it didnt matter at all...you logged in and had the new power....no more super muti-kicking action.......no you got the new low round house kick attack..that did less damage but was a faster animation.
I actualy deleted two of my characters when that happend. -

Quote:Well, indeed for my definition of evil, intent is key. if you look at big villians in this game, just about everyone is something of a mass murderer and it seems to boil down to a numbers game. recluse kills/ enslaves the world at the end of the destined arc, crey kills and enslaves clones of heroes, the thing in baron zoria's body indiscriminately takes peoples souls and fills their bodies with its followers, and has mass demonic sacrifice rituals, mot is mot, nem killed off a few dimensions for various reasons, initiated a war with a innocent dimensions with untold casualties, and bound rather than killed rularru, rularru is more a force of nature, but still seemed to destroy a planet, a portal mission has an alt version of your hero killing off an entire world(haven;t run it in a while, i kinda wish that if they havent yet, they expanded this particular bit of lore to let you fight and beat alt you and save that world), vahz chops people up regularly for his experiments, hami either kills or mutates people into slaves so numbers are just that, numbers, so many have them that its hard to see a division line. phipps is weak, but he is happily , purely evil, the evil isn't a byproduct of a greater ambition, it is a purpose in itsself to prey on the weak and harmless. It is true that recluse bears the responsibility for allowing him to be like this, all in the name of breaking the will of the helpless, but he seems to formulate his own plans quite well. Most of the bad things Nemesis has done probably have included in there somewhere stuff on a similar level to the bad things Phipps has done (or incited). e.g. the poisoning of small kids - given Nemesis' weaponry tends to involve fire, explosives, and poison gas, it's pretty likely his enterprises have included the poisoning of children somewhere along the way - he may not have specifically decided that he'd like to poison some children today, but he's gone ahead with mass murder knowing that children would be poisoned as part of it. And those children will have suffered just as much as the kid(s) Phipps poisoned.
The main question here is whether the scale and indifference of Nemesis' evil trumps the sadistic delight Phipps takes in his own.
(Personally I rate Nemesis as the most evil, as the suffering of the victims is pretty similar in either case, but he's got *way* more victims and not just due to success rates, his plans necessitate it - the reasons why he's inflicting that suffering do nothing to reduce it. I think Phipps is *nastier*, but his overall evil is dwarfed by Nemesis) -
ok, voted, looks like they did clarify. also a little disappointed that CLANG! wasnt on the kickstarter list, a realistic sword fighting game with the backing of the surprisingly funny sci fi author of snow crash. that was a biggie for me.

his enemies are magnificent..but he has something to tell them..he is not really left handed. in all seriousness, rian is always holding back, he is physically half dragon and he is powerful enough to smash a person like they had been hit by a truch, thats why he can destroy a kronos titan, or a behemoth lord. but he holds back because if he fights alongside new heroes and doesn't let them develop...he is only one dragon, cant be everywhere the only way they can grow is by him holding back and letting the new kids take their hits and learn.

ah but vills can do it solo. heroes are forced to fight a buffed version in an 8 person tf or in a pvp zone. for my sub main villian, dire worg, it was the last redside mish he did before taking a morality mish and going rogue. heroes do not yet get to fight him solo (edge cases have been reported of him showing up as an AV in safeguard mishes. but av soloing is another ball of wax.)Quote:arachnos also has prominent African-american characters, including the indomitable marshall brass. also, "rogue" longbow are pretty diverse, even before you hit the powered bosses with the purple/green skin. also, i think a lot of boss level crushers from the outcast are African-american. you know, that brings up the question though, is she sane but malevolent, or is she so crazy that she lacks the capacity to even understand good and evil and be capable of choosing. It certainly doesn't affect the end result, but when we are talking evil, i'd say the capacity to choose good over evil but choosing to do evil ranks higher than being biologically compelled to violence(like an arachnoid) or mentally incapable of not harming others, like mm . ingame she seems capable of planning , but also seems to be dissociated from reality.Crey is the only villain group I can think of that's an equal opportunity employer (maybe trolls - who knows what their skin color was before they went green).

Quote:well, sometimes the names are metaphorical references to the characters powers. batman attacks by night, "flies" and inspires fear in people. that is a lot of what bats do (albeit the last one is due to misunderstianding, as bats are actually good for the ecosystem). and raven's powers are darkness and the occult, often taking bird like shape, so that one is not too far off. plus super is a form of superlative, super man is a "super" man, he is stronger, faster, has powers that dont even map to humans but we would like, and is shown as being at least well above average in intelligence, so he kind of is named after his power, being good at everything.Quite possibly. I don't have a very good view of comic books, but the characters I do know seem to have names that, while descriptive, aren't exactly metaphors for their direct powers. Superman, for instance, is pretty generic but he's old so we can skip that one. Batman, similarly, has the theme of a bat, but not the powers of a bat. Marvel's Cyclops has a name which refers to his eyes, not necessarily to his powers. Wolverine, similarly, has the fighting style of a wolverine but not necessarily the powers of one. Gambit's name has nothing at all to do with his powers, which are "make things explode, nor do Rogue's powers have much to do with her name. We have Bishop - a mutant able to absorb and redirect energy, who's named after a religious rank. We have Shard, who I don't even know what her powers are.
Sure, we have people like Spider-Man who has the powers of a spider, Magneto who has the powers of magnetism, Storm who has control over storms and so forth. But for every Cyborg and Beastboy we have a Raven and Robin, is what I'm saying. It's why I don't have a good idea of how common the names are. Are they more common in this game?
Also, I cant really say that parity really exists in names, off the top of my head. aqua man controls water/sea creatures, colossus is strong and big and metal, beast has animalistic agility and features, joker usues weaponized joke props. iceman, phoenix, johnny blaze, the iron fist, marrow, its pretty common to make either a literal or metaphorical reference, especially if you are going for golden/silver age characters.
id say the split is maybe 30/70 until you get in the lower tier guys, and that usually seems to be because they dont want to blow a good iconic name on a nobody. -

Quote:That is one way of looking at it, but like i said upthread, part of why phipps is so hated is that he delights in hurting the helpless. One reason a lot of evil generals can to a flip to at least being respected even after killing lots of heroic characters is that they at least showed some class, they fought near equals and did so in open combat. phips orchestrates the poisoning of small kids he is a different, abominable kind of evil. its the same visceral reaction many have have to seeing some hurt a small dog or child, full on moral repulsion. I can sort of respect recluse, even if he does do the idiotic evil darwinist thing, he "picks on people his own size" but Phipps is a stain of humanity (as is midnight master). In fact, id go so far as to say that like agg said, phipps wants to be a monster. recluse has a goal, being the strongest and surrounding himself with the strongest, he does evil in persuit of a goal, but evil is not his goal, if he thought about things differently, he probably could do good as well, phipps is cruel to the core, it is his goal.I honestly don't think Westin deserves a mention at all. Yes, he's slimy and disgusting, but then so's the dog landmine I stepped in on my way home from work the other day, but you don't see me raising a fist in the air yelling "Damn you, irresponsible dog owners! Damn you all to hell!!!" No, I basically wipe my feet on the grass on then wash my shoes after the fact.
That's about the dignity Westin deserves to be regarded with. He's slimy and disgusting and makes us feel dirty afterwards, so take a shower and forget about him. The man is a toad with no ambition, no real power and no real lasting influence. He's the Sleez of City of Heroes. He's a small fish in an ocean of big fish, and he just happens to stink. That's about it.
To me, this is kind of asking what the scariest horror movie is and having someone quote the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes because they have lots of gore in them. -
well, this is based on incomplete information, since i havent finished first ward(yea, i take my time) but the midnight master.lets ignore his smarmy personality, he betrayed everyone that trusted him and not only murdered them but then enslaved their souls for as long as he enjoys using them as playthings. im with cerulean on him. at the stage of the story that i'm at i'd use the spork of jocas on him.
phipps is a good vote too, his propensity to harm the helpless is a factor. recluse is bad, but he generally seems to have his sights set on people who can give him a fight. I'm betting Phipps' childhood involved a lot of cruelty to small animals. -
well, right now i have a placeholder one for a angelic themed nature affinity/water defender- water of life. after the hymn, not the distilling agent, aspergillum would also fit.

If you have a chance, check out the PA. pyrotechnics association's world record attempt from may of this year, It was held locally so I actually got to see it, and it was pretty much a "finale" for nearly a half hour. Was very impressive.

also good. But i still like the tapeworm..maybe we can give the sharks one? I think it really holds the analogy together.

PANCAKE the cottage rule. its an improvement, glad they went with it.

Quote:dude, feeding the community with info is like feeding the saarlac pit...that has a tapeworm..we want more..we always want more...Everything that's been "leaked" has been through our official Twitch channel, not through various media outlets AFAIK. Our official, weekly, live streams are nothing new, and a venue we've been using to introduce new content and upcoming changes for well over a year now. We now have the ability to back these up on our YouTube channel, another official channel.
Nothing that's been discussed has broad Marketing Value. It's all very Community centric and really is something that's only interesting to current/former players of the game. When we're closer to beta, we'll release a full Issue 24 overview (I was just talking to Black Pebble about this today).
And here I thought that the Community would be excited about getting news about upcoming changes prior to the actual announcement.

you know, i really have to throw in with olantern here. It was probably meant as a nice way of saying they are looking at some qol fixes. but saying "fix everything"? that is asking the tangentally rational to make unrealistic expectations and going on a 12 page rant the next time they find a typo. I like the ideas discussed and thing it will be a good thing, but you kind of armed the insane with this title...

looks interesting, I do have one thing, i wish the "cross punch" were a kick instead. we have plenty of punching options for players with thematic needs to punch, but outside of jump kick and kick, we are limited for players who punch and kick and aren't martial arts or stj. Hoping feedback suggests to them that if they are working on customization, that we get a kick version of it as well (and yes, i know its called cross punch, we have an alt punch for crippling axe kick too, precedent exists). maybe we could use the wheel kick-ish move from the start of spinning strike.

eh, id compare it more to the "cheers" effect. barring significant difference in service, which doesn't happen with servers, the game itsself is the same everywhere, the next biggest determinant is community. and thats where you go where everybody knows your name. also, having a fully kitted out base with teleporters to all regions blue and redside is nice. Its not that we dont try other servers at times, but for a number of players, community counts. and while I am sure that if I started on freedom, pinnacle, virtue or wherever, I would have found people i could talk to there too, lib was where I started and lib is generally where i stay.

the comparison that jumps to mind for me is an old x-men comic where kitty pryde is telling a bedtime story and works in all the x-men as standard fairy tale tropes. It didnt happen in cannon but its an amusing side story.Quote:two even, the mallus mundi, from the halloween event is in official lore.Actually, at least one of the holiday event missions is definitely part of the overall lore. Reviving the Red Widow, which takes place during the valentines event, apparently really happens. She's standing beside Lord Recluse in Tyrants personal story.
So hey, if one holiday mission can be canon, who's to say the others aren't, too?
EDIT: i see dug read that x-men too.
