    "Someone will screw it up."

On and on. In fact, several of the successful ones I have been on have been nothing more than teams that attempted to do it to the best of their ability to see how far they could get, and then wound up finishing it. Or in some cases, got very close.

Positive attitude and perseverance is far more important right now than powersets and experience.
Kinda funny, last night had someone do that in our run.

Then, apparently they requeued and rejoined our raid, and bailed [of course] again.

    Was amusing at least.
  2. Most likely, it is psuedo-random number generator is random.

However, something to consider. We really don't know the method the RNG uses to generate and determine drops. I do recall the fun set of maps where a bit of the RNG function got determined by a dedicated userbase. That has since been fixed, yes.

But I am also left thinking specifically about the rng history at play with, say Pokemon, where you had situations in Gen 2, that made certain 'rare events' impossible to occur [specifically, the 1 to 7 female/male ratio pokemon being shiny].

We don't know the formula for the RNG [or drop determination for that matter], however, what we do know is that there was an incident already where the RNG failed and has since been reworked. It is fair to assume that any bits of the rng that referenced player controllable factors got reworked.

Very odd, makes me suspect it could be some place in the route packet shaping, but I dunno.
  4. Still proving too annoyingly difficult to post large text blocks from my phone. However, tracert not showing anything special, nor pathping. Given that I can occasionally pull the header.

Given I work for one of those carrier, I really shouldn't . Also, some of the carriers are actually changing folks plans who are free tethering. Not really relevant though .

Will give a shot after done at ebil work, not expecting much since it appears restricted to web.

Not possible for me. I am only able to access the forums (and account info) from my cellphone currently. And I am not manually typing a ping or tracert on my phone.
  8. Posting from phone since that's the only way I can access the forums. Same deal here on my desktop and laptop not able to access the webpages at all. Not even billing at plaync for that matter.
  9. [ to troll or not to troll ... hmmm, don't take this too seriously ]

    A pink one.

Although I call shenanigans, "fun" is horribly inspecific and subjective .

I'd like some reason to log in and continue to play my level capped characters. Some more advancement. IOs work to an extent, although that's just a money grind [and not a particularly hard one unless I decide to Purple out a build].

Replaying the leveling grind never really felt satisfying to me as an endgame. I do like WoW's mix of random loot progression and fixed grind progression. It gives variety to the encounters. Still frustrating at times, but at least generally feels like you're making progress to something [until ya got the Big Bad on farm status and really just hoping for the RNG to be nice]. I'm not sure how I feel about the Trial reward methods. I do know they have a Public Quest reward method, which is similar and does try to break up the monotony, but I'll wait till it's live to judge if that works for me .

Story is important with any content, would like to think goes without saying.

To be fair, the sandals are called thongs here too. So, it's just difficulty in general .

Interesting sidenote, it appears that CoH's numbers were comparable to EQ2's numbers before EQ2X launched.

It was the glue guns that did for me in that tip mission. /Regen is an interesting set, but it's really dependant on click powers, and when your recharge gets floored... well... not good.

All that said, I will agree with Memphis Bill about the Vahzilok. Those guys are murderous for the level range they appear in, worse than just about anything redside, or goldside for that matter, which is saying something.
Except they appear red-side too, just not getting locked to appear in the 1-5 range if you picked the wrong origin.
  14. A well written villain [that isn't a sociopath or psychopath] will appear grey is the bulk of the problem.

World pvp is just simply not really going to float well in this game, and frankly, the engine isn't well suited to handle it.

Same thing with the RWZ. Longbow has no reason to be there when Vanguard are the ones specifically equipped to deal with Rikti.
I think the why for Longbow attacking/defeating the staff is just a bug to be honest. Or more so, just an unintentional consequence of how they set those encounters up.

Longbow's response to the Arachnos breakout is fairly appropriate, imo. And the rivalry with vanguard and longbow is actually fairly detailed in the RWZ arc.

One sidenote though, the corrections staff at the Zig is more used to dealing with Metas that are in suppression cells.

And by that train of thought, why should they use their rifles? Plenty of villains shrug those off too.

Why are the fire heroes even bothering to take on Infernal? He tends to laugh at them too. Or fire villains going after Infernal.

You go in with what you have and don't back down.
I have seen them use it on the prison staff at the Zig actually.

Oh, and just before the release of NGE, SOE had the gall to keep on saying that no major changes were on the way either.
I believe it was that no major changes were part of Trials of Obi-Wan. And the NGE incident was within weeks of release which really sucked. I think that was a good example of too much change, and the problems involved with using another company's IP franchise.

Interesting sidenote though. NGE is a good example of the game itself changing to try to be more in line with the broader audience's comfort zone. There are very few skill-based MMOs in the market [Eve and someother superhero mmo come to mind].

All said, NGE was a very unique instance due to other factors in play that resulted in a situation that really wasn't beneficial for the players at all.

I do know, however, that this sort of design can and does often lead to a part of the game stagnating and becoming that much less enticing, if just by comparison.
I can comment on the repurposed zones. But with the exception of Naxx, they really are all new content, just using the old zone art resources. Naxx was mostly a mechanical update [which worked out nicely given initially Naxx had very little 'play' time]. It's nice, and works, but it also showcases a bit of the design difference with WoW and CoH.
  20. I prefer entertainment that takes me out of my comfort zone, that's why I like sci-fi . There is something to be said for more passive entertainment [I also like Sci-Action ], and it really depends on the context.

I think with MMOs, you can see the difference very well drawn when you consider the difference in players who pvp and players who don't pvp. Yes there are many points in between, but the contrast I think is a valid one.

In general though, it's all a matter of tolerances and choose appropriate genres. And realize that when a game in this genre stops changing, that game is dead. So for this genre, you probably do need a greater tolerance for change than other gaming genres.

Is it any deeper than that? Do you run the new Jenkins arc or Apex or whatever thinking "Wow, what nuanced characters with complex motivations?" Not really. It's Evil Goatee Earth with a slightly different backstory but ends up being Evil Goatee Earth all the same.
For Apex specifically, there were the Warworks comments about limited civilian casualties and the remarks about Marchand.
  23. Just a fun thought, doesn't this also mean that the Beta and Test servers will get merged as well?

Which, oddly enough, was shown with the Dark Watcher arc in Praetoria. It is an uphill battle. I will say though that is, perhaps closer to the DS9 rendition of the evil goatee universe than say the TOS rendition.

    Then, there's also the Goodie-two-Spandex-shoes universe .

So far only the Alpha slot's level shift applies outside of Incarnate Trials [the other incarnate level shifts I believe don't even apply to Apex and Tin Mage TFs]. And given the nature of the turnstile, it'd be a bit more difficult to be 'elitist' effectively in stopping the 'scrubs' from getting in. Sure folks can still be tools, but that'll always be the case [gignore ftw].

But honestly, I don't see it being any more likely to cause 'elitism' than IOs.
