Quote:Have to agree here.. IF you have not tried out Traps yet, I would definitely suggest it over Thermal.I'd say /Traps too. Bots/Traps is a classic destroyer combo. Fun as hell to set up your very own room of doom too.
IF ( and that's a big IF ) they could get the Mastermind pet AI and commands down a bit more solid then it is today. Then I think many other sets would open up to becoming a bit more viable.
The issue is simply the lack of control you have over the pets. Which I know you understand because you have the dark MM. The issue I find now is your going to have to rely on your pets now being buffed up enough to survive. With dark which is very much similar to Traps in this sense. Your debuffing and harassing the mobs instead.
Traps take this one step further because your really not relying on Anchoring a debuff to a mob or a Toggle. Traps is very much more Drop and go. The recharge with a low end set IO 50 toon makes the your traps come up then you need. I usually have 2 Acid Mortars, 2 Poison Traps, Several Trip mines as needed, Double Caltrops, ETC.
I would suggest this thread to really look at a great Robot Traps build. If someone could suggest a better build I would love to see it. My build posted there is pretty much the cheaper version of Raterro build. Of course being cheaper means less fire power then Raterro build. But I can solo +1 +8 and +2 +8 with the build. Raterro without a doubt with that build could do much more if not max setting.

Defense cap.. You can get that with Traps.
I wouldn't count out Time Bomb for a Traps player. Simply because with a decent hold like Poison Traps it will give you enough time to lay down Time Bomb. Right after you can drop down a Trip Mine, Then fire off a AOE attack from DP.
On my Sonic Traps what usually do is go in and try to get line of sight aggro on everything I can. Basically the mobs will be jumping all over each other trying to get at me. I lay down Poison Traps, Trip mine, Triage Beacon, Caltrops. Once I have them scattering and they start to regroup. I drop down Poison Trap again followed by Time Bomb then Trip mine and some sort of AOE attack from Sonic.
I try to do Time Bomb first but sometimes I have so many mobs on me I have to clear some out to give me some breathing room. Because there are so many the luck chance to hit takes effect and some get through interrupting my Time Bomb. By that time Poison trap has worn off and I am getting too much aggro. So with Trip mine it blows them back and I can get a chance to lay out Time Bomb now..
I use the inspirations that the mobs drop to keep me topped off. Because I can kill so many at a time I eat the inspirations fast. Some times I even eat a few purples to make my defense soar up to 70s.
I consider this build similar to the old bull and young bull on a hill over looking some cows proverb. This build is definitely the old bull -
I had to reboot to get the correct numbers.. odd

@ Neogumbercules
Okay I got home and pulled up the build.
How are you soft capped ? I could be misunderstanding what they mean by soft capped but I thought it meant 45% in a defense type or positional to be soft capped.
I'm reading your Ranged defense at 29% not 37% and your Smash and Lethal at 35% -
From what I have read about Pain, there is not much to go by. The most I have read is it is a weaker Thermal. I do have a DS Pain but I haven't played him so much to get a real feel for him and the powers. I was working a Pain Tankermind build out, but I do not know how viable it is.
Thermal again from what I have read is slow to start and relies on you buffing up your pets and making sure they are buffed up at all times. I can relate to this with my Robot FF MM. Not much love there trying to remember to keep the buffs going.
Dark as was mentioned really can get your defense capped as long as Darkest Night is running and of course that mob is near the rest of the pack. Which I have to say usually is. I might consider picking up the Hold just to make sure your anchor stays where you want him to instead of running away. I have a Dark Electric defender and I can tell when the Anchor for Darkest Night is either away or dead just by amount of hits that are now connecting.
Out of the 3 I would say in fun order Dark, Pain, Thermal. Though I am sure if you pick up the right powers from those 3. I think you might get more teams with the reverse order. I know teaming with my DS Pain people usually cheer to have a healer type. -
Don't make one.. Instead I would suggest Merc Traps.. As for the build just copy a Robot Traps build and replace with mercs.
Look a bit lower you will see someone revived Rattero thread which I think has a excellent Traps build for any mastermind. -
I would imagine this has been said already but, saying it again. Veteran rewards staff and wand. It almost feels like there was a sale on these staves/wands. SEVERAL alternate looks would be nice..

I think that Storm is going to be counterproductive to your DP powers. DP currently is one of the lowest DPS atm. Not horrific but low.
DP AOE attacks are very short range and I can see you accidentally pushing mobs out of your AOE with Hurricane or even Lighting storm.
Storm is not loved by many because of all the KB it has and of course the players running around with Hurricane on all the time.
Storm shows it strength against AVs and GMs. But other then that fast pace teams do not have time or willing to have the time to pull mobs into a corner so a stormer can hold them in there etc..
If you want Dual Pistols then I would switch Storm for Traps, Dark, Kin..
If you want Storm then I would switch Dual Pistols for Rad, Ice, Sonic.
If you want a build then simply look around for any Storm build download it and replace the attack component with Pistols. Just look at what others are listing for DP in other builds and you will get a feel for what many think is good and bad. Just remember to pick powers that work well with Storm powers. Think power sets, example when I have hurricane on I will be using this attack. When I have Lighting storm on I will be using this attack. -

Cant see your build right now.. But if you have 45% in all your defenses / positional types then your golden.
I would do a search for my name but look up a thread by Ratero I think. I might have his name wrong. That is why I mention do a search for my name on these forums. But Ratero pretty much did the defining build for Robot Traps. I then kicked it down to the cheap end. Granted going cheaper lowered many of the regens and other bonuses but it still stayed within the tankermind constraints and further I run the build so I know it works in standard tankermind fashion. The difference is mine is running +1 +8 with ease. So easy that I fall asleep sometimes during a solo farm and wake up with the mobs around me cleared or logged out but alive. Ratero build would probably do +2 +8 with no issues and probably +3 +8 in similar fashion.
You mentioned travel powers. I will say this, if you can afford the 10 bucks for ninja run, I would say get that booster pack and buy a jet pack in grandville and your pretty much covered.
Travel powers are so early 2k.
I can see the day that they just finally concede and just allow players to pick up travel powers without taking up a actual power slot. At this point it really does not have any effect on the game. If it did everyone would be using X travel for some sort of game advantage.
Nutshell compare you build to what is already out there.. No need to reinvent the wheel when someone did it for you. You will know if your build is good or not when you start looking at others. -
Quote:If you look at some of my threads in various AT forums you will see I push traps a lot. Traps and anything else is king. You can run Traps without pets and still do +1 +8, it's that good. People will say Dark is nice as well and I will agree, but since dark has nothing like trip mine you must have your pets for dps. With traps my pets are doing extra damage but not a requirement. Thanks for the input. It looks like tanking is out of the question with Necromancy. Its to bad as I really wanted to run a build with them as I don't see many Necros around.
As for the defense I was able to get just about everything to cap on a Necro/Traps build but could not figure out how to with Pain. Thanks for the build as you manged your IOs better than I could. I focused too much on trying to be different and get regen as high as possible. I guess I was pretending to be a scrapper.
On a non Tankermind build is necromancy viable or do AOEs make melee pets sub-par for higher end content? If possible I would still like to run Necromancy but will build a more "normal" MM instead of focusing on tanking myself.
Though I have been playing around trying to make a tankermind out of pain. As I mentioned I'm a bit short on the defense caps. I am still working on it to see how close I can get. Pain unlike dark though does not have darkest night which helps your defense cap in the other direction, by lowering mobs to hit score. Which is really similar to gaining a defense increase.
As was mentioned Thermal is good and many consider Thermal superior to Pain. I sort of consider pain the set that just has enough to get you into trouble, but not much to get you out of it. It is still a new set to me as well and I have been asking around in other parts of the forums. I think it was Silias that mentioned the aoe regen for pain is much higher for MM then it is for others. Which is a bonus. Again something I didn't look at. Though I think it is mentioned in mids hero builder. Just something I over looked. And to be honest about pain, I have not seen any big info on it. I have not seen any of the big number crunching players put out data on how many of the powers work such. Again not when compared to some of the other power sets.
Personally I am thinking of maybe doing the same of kicking up all the Pain aspects and have high regen for world of pain and such. Might not be the +1 +8 solo machine, but the healing aspect might be of value to some end game TF and SF players. People remember how good the heals are or lack thereof. That might be a route to go. Then once 50 you can make a Defense cap Pain build but just to S and L and keep a 50 AE ticket mission based around S and L type mobs, like the samurai AE and some S and L regular mission to farm IOs and salvage.
You know there are so many angles sometimes who knows whats right or best to do. -
Quote:I will echo this, but try to explain a bit more.. Not saying it is NOT possible, just more difficult and definitely not possible with this build..You can't really be a tankermind with a melee pet set... That is the help I'm giving you.
You need to be DEFENSE CAPPED, not defense capped for this type of build. You need either many more defenses if not ALL capped to be able to pull Tankermind off. Otherwise every energy mob will drop you flat fast. Regardless of bodyguard mode and the resistances you might have. Elite Bosses or several bosses will dwindle down your health. Even if you had super regen and your heals up in .5 seconds you would not be able to keep your pets alive.
In bodyguard mode an AV or a High con EB would kills your tier 1 pets in 1 or 2 hits.. Your Tier 2 pets would be hurt. Another hit or even 2 ( I'm being nice with my estimations ) will kill off your Tier 2 pets. Your Tier 3 pet will maybe take 1 more hit before it dies.. Then your next..
It is very difficult to get Pain Defense capped. ATM this is best I can do. Compare it to your build to see the differences.
Range pets are much easier because big bosses, AVs do AOE attacks which might not hurt you because of defenses, but will kill off your pets instead.
It seems you understand defenses, but are thinking all you need is Smash and Lethal capped. Which is where your concept went off the mark. That is why I mentioned Energy attacking mob above..
Either way I hope you got something out of this, and maybe some new idea's as well

From a 5 year player and from someone who's first 50 was a Storm Rad Defender, very good info. I didn't know about the some of the max info on slow and such. I sure didn't know about the rain bug.
-
Though brophog02 gave you some links. So you know sometimes people appreciate it more if you post a build for others to critique. It makes people feel like your trying to do your part and give others an idea of what your interested in.
I could lay out a defense cap build for you, but if you don't even know what defense cap is or the whole purpose behind the build. You won't have a clue why certain powers were picked over others. Or how to run the build persay.
I made builds that I liked when I first started, but then after so many years I decided to read up on this Defense Cap so many talk about. I became a Defense Cap born again zealot. All my builds lean in that direction now.
So with that all said posting a build and having someone tweak or give you a direction to go to will make you understand a bit about the game mechanics, which are important if you want to last and be useful and honestly enjoy the game a bit more. -
Quote:He said update. I was thinking more in the line of adding it to patch notes and not fixing it persay. I understood he meant working as intended but didn't mention it in the patch updates.Read what Castle wrote, its on his to-do list of things to fix.
I sure hope he meant fix.. -
As brophog02 mentioned, plus several of the threads I have read about it. Even if posters about it are wrong. There has to be some sort of issue with it because I see many complain about it, similar to me griping about Devices.
I consider taking TA similar to me creating a Petless mastermind. Your doing it because you have done everything else already. Or at least go into expecting it not to be great. I think the issue is for a MM compared to a controller the TA powers take a bit longer to recharge and such. -
Guys I just took a look at all your builds. It is obvious your not understanding the Defense cap and that Defenders get Defense bonuses. Defenders also get a 30% damage increase when solo as well now..
With Traps there are TONS of ways of getting your defenses capped.
Here is a weak build just to show defense caps. You need to get those defenses up to 45%. You also want to get some decent recharge for Trip mine and other attack powers.. 7 seconds on Trip mine is a decent number. If you get Trip mine down to that range everything else will also be at some decent levels.
Try to rework your stuff and tweak it up a bit.. Mids has a Set bonus finder under the window tab on top.. Once you get a decent Traps build it will pretty much be good for ANY Arch Type that can use Traps.. Traps is a GREAT set. I usually say, it is what Device should be..

Actually I wouldn't mind if they had the run without the ninja.. Or I would like if when you stop running you stood up straight, or the option to choose so.. I find it a bit silly to have many just standing around in ninja pose ( looks more like count dracula without the cape )
-
So you know If you have Ranged/ Melee/AOE capped then you don't need Smash and lethal capped.. It's either one or the other.. Typed or Positional. The reason Depending on what your doing with the build Many try for Smash and Lethal and try to get Ranged capped or if your a Ranged attacker then your looking to get Ranged since your not looking to get into Melee range. The system will take which ever defense is greater to help you
-
Cant look at the build atm, but I can say with Traps if your at Defense cap all around you have the ability afforded to you to drop a time bomb because of all the misses. I do it with my Sonic Traps. Though sometimes I need to drop a Poison Traps to give me a few more seconds when mobs are sneaking in some attacks.. Nutshell I use it more since I can with such high defenses, since I can place it down more anytime then just in certain situations because I lacked the Defenses.. As in person say AR Device.

Heff I think Neo did what your asking.. that 37% ranged is NICE... Will be saving that build once I get home..
Sorry about the build, I'm a cheapskate and just make a cheap as possible out of force of habit. -

Do not be afraid to dismiss your pets and resummon.. During some TF or SF it might be needed to run to a different spot on the map.. I cannot tell you how many times a MM forgets to dismiss his pets and drags tons of aggro over to the meeting spot.. Sometimes pulling the AV accidentally..
Personally I would do anything Traps. With Traps you can be at defense cap and spam Trip mine without even having the pets out.. Further your FFG will help everyone out defense wise. Plus all the other tricks Traps has. No other secondary can really offer that.
Traps will really make you feel like a super super villain or hero if you go that route.. More so, Traps anything is great, regardless of AT.. If you can pick up Traps then you are SOLID.. I would rather do less DPS but be alive then a bit more DPS and taking a concrete nap.
Robots can be a pain because of size but there DPS is less resisted compared to Thugs Smash and Lethal damage. But that is just me nitpicking.
I reiterate make your first MM experience a great one.. Pick up any pets but make your secondary Traps. You will be able to solo +1 +8 WITHOUT PETS and no crazy IOs needed. Basic cheap stuff.
Also due to the way Pet AI is ATM and has been for a long time, I personally believe it is much easier to control the mobs instead of the pets. So I would suggest using the Tankermind concept and use Provoke. I found my MM life much easier once I could get defense cap and Provoke the mobs to me instead of sending the pets in. Sadly that does not happen until level 41 or so. Until then you basically just have to do the standard resummon when they die, not much you can do. As I leveled I would either start the attack myself so the pets would run into fights less or I would send the pets in on a troublesome NPC ( think LB Neutralizer or Gunslinger, careful with Gunslinger TP though ).
Dark is nice as well, A healing type is also a boon as some might even ask you not for your pets but just simply because they need a healer, but you cannot do what you can with Traps..
