  1. Hmmmm, hadn't really thought about it before... but if there are lots of people on Freedom to PvP with, and no people on Pinnacle to PvP with (just to pick on Pinnacle for no reason) then logically Freedom will end up with more PvP recipe drops than the low population servers.

I'm pretty sure that is true, and always has been, but it has never mattered before. As long as the drops went onto the market, they became equally available to all servers. But now, if prices really are going to be consistently above the price cap on the market, then it should follow that a significant number of pvp recipes will sell off-market.

And once the free server transfers vanish, that will mean that the recipes stay on the server where they dropped.

That seems silly. If there is no one playing, and less than 10% of all players read the forums, then there must be... let me see... carry the one... No one here on the forums to read his gloomongering.

I didn't mean it as a personal attack on you. There are a lot of threads from a lot of people with a lot of questions and speculation. It's what we all do when we don't have any actual information yet.

Yeah, that's one way to handle it. People can wander around the zones together, being on opposite sides but not knowing it. As I recall, SWG was like that. You didn't necessarily know someone was a member of the rebellion or an imperialist. But in that game people could turn on their PvP flag, and then fight each other in the streets, IIRC.* You're thinking something more like a game-wide Pocket D?

I thought it was interesting that the devs said at herocon that the Clockwork would be neutral unless you attacked them, unlike the Arachnos soldiers in CoV who will always fight you. But that raises a question: if someone does get into a fight with the Clockwork, and a Loyalist wanders by, are they allowed to jump into the fight and help the Clockwork out?

If yes, then we have a problem with potentially unwanted PvP. If no, then we have a problem with immersion. It would be like a hero standing there watching police get shot and not being able to intervene.

    * I haven't actually played SWG in years, so I may be misremembering the details. It is a similar situation though. Hidden rebels fighting an evil empire.
  5. Because we can't have too many threads full of groundless speculation about GR...

When the devs were designing CoV, they had a problem. The basic requirements were contradictory. On the one hand, there was no way they could force zonewide PvP onto their playerbase. On the other hand, it didn't make any sense to have heroes and villains walking down the street of Steel Canyon together not noticing each other.

They solved this by segregating the villains entirely into their own zones, where they would never see a hero except in the newly created PvP zones.

Of course, this created more problems: if all the villains are off by themselves, who are they supposed to rob and murder and plunder? And who is going to stop them?

I've often gotten the impression that some of the current dev team don't really like the fundamental Paragon vs Rogue Isles design choice that was made back in the day. So it seems to me that GR gives them an opportunity to address the same issue, but this time to do it right... whatever they think "right" means.

It's still a challenge. Many, if not most, of the players in this game would be very unhappy if Praetoria was an open PvP zone. But it doesn't make much sense to have Loyalists and Resistance members riding the T together without fighting each other.

How do you think they'll handle it? Totally separate zones again? Or some kind of optional PvP flag? Maybe you can go "undercover" in a hostile zone, and no one knows which faction you are. I dunno. But I imagine it's something the devs spent a lot of time thinking about.
  6. When I first heard the "no war walls" thing I was underwhelmed. I remember when the Rikti invasions started, the devs hyped the fact that the war walls were coming down. All it meant was that they were no longer visible to players, and the Rikti could go through them. The walls were not gone in any meaningful way.

Maybe it means something different this time, but it isn't a big deal to me however they do it.
  7. 1. Will characters created in Praetoria be able to get Halloween salvage right away, or do they have to wait until October or level 20?

Believe it or not, that really is the main thing I'm curious about, because it determines the character concept that I am planning to roll for GR.

    2. In general, what are the marketing opportunities for Praetorians.
    3. How are Loyalists divided from the members of the Resistance in terms of zones and PvP?
    4. When will beta start?
    5. Are they introducing the Spy archetype that was hinted at in that old marketing survey?

If there are fewer players, then there is less money, so prices should go down. But if there are fewer players, then there are fewer recipes, so prices should go up. Result: nothing.

A lower population does not mean lower prices.
  9. Population just doesn't matter that much. If the population goes down, then both supply and demand drop. Prices are a function of the ratio between supply and demand. When both go up or both go down, prices stay the same.

What's the difference between 10/10 and 25/25? Different numbers; same ratio.

(Yes, of course population makes *some* difference, especially in the amount of fluctuations around an average price, and when supply gets too low then people sometimes change their behavior in fundamental ways which affects everything... but generally speaking a simple increase or decrease in overall population does not translate into an increase or decrease in price since both buyers and sellers are entering or leaving the market.)

    Zombie Invasions

I don't generally bother with zone events unless I'm trying to help someone else. For my own sake, no. Why should I? I don't care about getting the badges, the xp and inf are very poor for the time spent, merit rewards on giant monsters are iffy, a lot of the zone events I find kind of confusing, and most importantly they just lack fun. There's no upside.

The biggest secret of WW is patience. Having your family restrict your playing time can be a huge asset. I'm right there with you. The key is to let your money work while you're offline. If you just look at the market, don't see what you want, and walk away, you're missing out on a great opportunity.

Put in bids, and then walk away. By the time you get back, the bids will often have filled. There might be nothing for sale when you come back, but somewhere in between someone will have listed something and you will have bought it... and you weren't even online!

Try putting in bids on SO's for dirt cheap, like 2,500 inf. It may take a long time, but if you're not logged in then what do you care? People who play 8 hours a day every single day can't stand to wait a few days for a bid to fill. You can! Use that to your advantage.

A level 25 IO is about the same as an SO, which is much better than a DO. Higher level IO's are even better. If you look in the market you might see them priced at 200,000 or 300,000 or even more. Put in a bid at 50,001 and wait a few days. See what happens. That's only a little more than an SO would cost, but you never need to replace the IO.

And you know what else? If you buy an extra IO at 50,001, then you can turn around and resell it for 149,000... and it will probably sell overnight! Profit! (Depending on the IO of course. Something like a level 20 immobilize is mostly worthless, but a level 30 heal bounces up and down in price every day).

    Not impressed

I think I probably had the worst computer in the CoV beta. I rarely got frame rates in the double digits, and never more than 15 fps or so. I'd like to think that my experience was somehow helpful to the dev team, but after a while I gave in and bought a new computer. I certainly can't afford to do that again for ultra mode.

But even with my old computer I never had any trouble at all playing CoH.

I don't mean they've never changed at all, but they're in the same ballpark now that they were when the markets were introduced. As you said, during the AE craze, uncommon salvage spiked. Then the AE craze ended, and uncommon prices dropped. Prices changed, and then they changed back.

My main source of information, besides my own experience, is the old Market Watch column from the City Scoop. I can't find them again right now, but I was looking at them not too long ago and I was surprised just how little rare salvage prices have changed.

Recipe prices weren't in there, and they have certainly changed more, but there have been so many changes to the game which would affect supply and demand that it's impossible to say why the prices changed.

I'm not arguing that prices haven't changed at all. I'm just saying that what we are seeing is not hyperinflation or mudflation. 50% inflation every month would be hyperinflation. That's not happening. Sure, the price of purples went up when the devs introduced new ways to buy everything except purples (using merits) and new content which couldn't drop purples (AE) but that's not inflation. That's a shift in supply and demand.

Salvage prices haven't changed significantly since the markets were introduced. There is considerable fluctuation from hour to hour, but not so much from month to month.

Recipe prices have changed in response to changes in the game, but I would argue that they have found a new equilibrium. Of course, the game never stops changing, so prices never stop changing, but that doesn't fit the definition of hyperinflation.
  15. I bookmarked the 2009 AE Player Choice Awards, and I keep meaning to get together a team and run them.

As for defeat all missions, it's not a question of how many foes you have to defeat. It's a question of how long it takes to find the last phase-shifted spectral ghost hiding behind a ramp. I have wasted too much of my life running around almost empty maps trying to find that last stupid mob to willingly subject myself to that torture again. You can't drop an AE mission.

Rumor has it that some upcoming QoL feature will ease the pain. I hope it applies to AE missions as well as regular missions.

I was one of those blasters! I had to leave after Austin's arc, sadly. I don't normally try to participate in events with rednames because of overcrowding and lag. I was surprised how easy and fun this was.

I'm going to have to rerun that arc solo though, so I can really appreciate all of the text.

    Thanks Avatea!
  17. What does "appropriately leveled" mean? Within the level range of the arcs? If so, what are those level ranges? With all the autoexemping/sidekicking stuff, it hardly seems to matter.

EDIT: FPAARN? Really? I think that's a first for me.

No level 1's. If you can't contribute to a team, then joining it would be inappropriate. -theOcho

I've been hearing a lot of in-game chat about Star Trek Online beta lately.

I don't think GR beta has started yet. AFAIK, there is only one instance of the training server up and everyone can access it.

My two cents on the disposition of drops: if it has 1+ for sale and 0 bids, I'm going to delete it. If it has 1+ bids and 0 for sale, I'm going to sell it. Take this karma recipe for example: 0 for sale, 28 bids. I'm going to list it for slightly more than the highest price in the last five, on the grounds that every other recipe must have been underpriced or else the supply wouldn't be 0.

Every other drop I've gotten so far I've deleted, I think. For the time being I'm locked at level 15, by the way.
And it sold. I got 15 mill for it. I can't remember what I listed it for, but the last five prices are all back down to around 5 mill, and supply is back to 0.

On an unrelated note, it appears we had quite a luck charm run at some point. Every luck charm listed below 5mill sold out, and more than half the ones I listed at 5 mill are gone. Let's see, I bought them for under 50,000. I sold them for 5,000,000. Yeah, I think I came out ahead on that deal. Of course, it took at least six months for them to sell.

  23. Congratulations on the promotion, War Witch! I know we've never met, but it really makes me happy to see you move up like this. I found this quote from the last time you were featured in "Ask a Dev":

    Quote:
I was the luckiest of the lucky. I came in with NO design experience back when Cryptic was a very small start-up company. It was through sheer need that I got a crack at design. My first job was working in the editor placing beacons. Place, move, paste. Place, move, paste. Hours and hours a day.
    And now look at you!

    On to the questions...

Originally, the city was divided into City Zones, Hazard Zones, and Trial Zones. These designations don't seem to fit the current game environment. Please tell us a little about your philosophy when it comes to creating new zones. Do you think you will make time to update the older zones to fit in with your philosophy?

The in-game economy has grown to be an important part of the game since the addition of Inventions and the Markets in Issue 9. Are you happy with the prices and the supply of goods in the Markets?

The new missions in the game are so wonderful that a lot of the older missions are looking a little shabby. Has there been any thought given to updating or replacing those missions, especially since Ouroboros and Architect Entertainment provide ways to keep the missions in the game?

I've always found it very difficult to read any of the mission briefings and pay attention to the story when I'm on a task force, but much of the game's story is contained in those task forces. It's much easier to really appreciate the story when I'm solo, but task forces aren't designed to be done solo. What are your thoughts on the conflict between teaming and storytelling?

Ooh, one more blast from the past, from that previous interview:

    Quote:
I feel so confident that ONE DAY someone will realize my brilliance, that I am going to paste a snippet of suggestions for your enjoyment. (That is, when you stop laughing.)

So welcome to November 14th, 2002:

    Ex-Superhero Zone

Ex-superheroes retired/injured community. Almost everyone you talk to has seen "some" kind of action and has a story to tell -- maybe could even help players with their more lengthy quests. Plus you could do kind of an "irony" twist on some well-known superheroes -- but not, of course.

[This is more of a ‘theme’ than a zone. A whole zone dedicated to old geezers sitting on their front porches talking about the glory days? What do I fight?! Boredom?]

    Hollywood Zone

Everyone's got a cell phone, every car is a BMW, every street has a tourist taking pictures of particular spots that look eerily familiar (but not, of course, exact). Maybe a few NPCs walking down Rondeno Drive (as opposed to Rodeo Drive) look or dress suspiciously familiar. Plus shopkeepers could be especially rude as they look the superhero up and down (kind of like the Pretty Woman thing with Julia Roberts). Villains? Everyone could be an Agent, Lawyer, or Publicist.

[Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! *cough* I stand by this one.]
  24. Congratulations to all, but especially War Witch!
  25. I'm not 100% convinced that the supply of money is going up. Prices don't seem to have changed much since the market was introduced. The price of salvage has barely budged. Same thing with common IO's. Set IO prices shift around, but I don't really see them going up. The price of purples went up, but I'm pretty sure the supply went down, so that's not surprising.

There are only two places where I see surprisingly large numbers: PvP IO's are insanely expensive, and the amount of money thrown around at costume contests has gone up by a factor of 10 or 100.

Besides, influence is an illusion. The real question is how many hours do you need to play in order to get an item? Think of it this way: $1,000,000 for a taco sounds really expensive, but if everyone gets paid $10,000,000 then suddenly that taco looks pretty cheap.

If you do want to see smaller influence numbers, then I think a good starting point would be to cut the value of common IO recipes above level 40. I haven't done the math, but I think those are a bigger source of income than most people realize.
