Quote:Needs to be noted that either 1) this does NOT fix this problem for everyone, or 2) there is something else that causes these exact effects, which is not related to the cache at all.- There is a rare legacy issue which may cause video settings to become corrupted, causing game crashes or preventing the game from starting. The Mac client does not detect the erroneous cached settings; You must toss out your game preferences (Users > [yourname] > Library > Preferences > City of Heroes Preferences) to resume normal play. This is known as a legacy issue because its caused by an older version of the client, but inherited by the new one. The signature methods of crashing are Assertion Failure or sudden mass corruption of on-screen graphics and a crash.

Er.. they'll probably keep working the same way as now. "Inherent" just means "you don't have to spend a power pick, you get the power for free". Sprint and Ninja Run are inherent powers, remember. So you'll get a bonus when you're in human form, and when you're not, you don't.
-
Fitness becomes inherent.
A change that a lot of us have been asking for since.. well.. since the game was launched. =p -
I posted screenshots of this very same thing happening. Here. I also found another post with this happening with someone else, but I can't find it now.
I'm in the middle of a very long support ticket right now. For awhile, they wanted to push it off as an nVidia problem. They contacted me again for more info, so I'm sending crash reports and such. I really don't expect it to get fixed, but you should open a ticket as well. Maybe with more data they'll figure out whatever the hell it is that's wrong. -

Yes, cleared out everything even remotely related to COH on the drive between installs. Did a full power cycle.
-
CLUE: are you running windowed or full-screen? I would get the black screen or similar when full-screen and, like you, be forced to reboot to get the computer back. If you run it windowed, it's still going to crash, but you won't be locked up anymore.
I've since given up and am playing on my XP partition until my subscription runs out again.
Currently, my version is 1.0.4296; this is the install off the Going Rogue DVD. Crashing happens the same as it ALWAYS has. However, this same thing happened with version 1.0.3068, and the test client I installed was 1.0.3069, and I know that the last download install I had was more recent than that, probably 4000-something.
I think the version number is a red herring, quite honestly. -
Actual farms.
Make them a destination accessible by tram and ferry.
Nice, big zones, lots of farms, some farmhouses, some barns. Livestock.
This way, any time I see someone ask for a farm, I can tell them how to get there. -
So is this being /bug'd by folk?

I rolled a Kinetic Melee/Ninjitsu also.
It is fantastic.
Over time, I slowly grew my Broadsword/Regeneration scrapper into, well, basically a tough stalker; I rely a lot on Stealth + Stealth IO, then Build-Up + Headsplitter positioning. I'd wanted to try a stalker, but none of the sets appealed to me (or I've used them before, and didn't feel like treading old ground).
Gameplay is basically the same, except now I get a bunch of /Ninjitsu toys to help, and KM feels nicely different from Broadsword.
Also, as another RL player, the pillar dancing metaphor is spot-on. ;D -
Quote:This.. doesn't make any sense why it would be different. To make sure I'm clear: I didn't just install COH on an external drive. I formatted an external drive as bootable, installed a clean copy of OSX on it, and then installed COH on that. It was, essentially, a 100% fresh install of both the OS and the game. I tried this both with launch 10.6 and with a copy all Software Update'd.nunix, the next correct troubleshooting step after disconnecting the external drive is try creating a new *user* on your computer, make sure to give it admin privileges, and log in as that user to run CoH. Let me know if that improves the situation any.
I get that running off a firewire connection might, in some way, cause problems.. but I would expect these to be new, different problems, not the exact same ones I have now. -
Quote:Well, the external drive was NCSoft Support's request during troubleshooting. Test Server also had the same problem on a clean install, so.. I'm not saying that wiping the Preferences folder doesn't work - because apparently it has worked for some - but it definitely is not working for me.nunix, try to avoid running CoH from an external drive, there may be USB/Firewire device driver issues causing some of the crashes that are interfering with clean test results.
However, until I tested it under XP via Boot Camp, support was also 100% ready to blame my hardware. When I tested it under XP and then passed along some of the threads in this forum, that's when they came up with the nVidia driver idea.
What this tells me is they have no idea what's going on, and the complete lack of support (and cluelessness regarding issues that are posted in their own forums) means I'll likely let my subcription lapse, and tell others who are thinking about getting the game to play under OSX to skip it. You don't sell a program - particularly one you want a subscription fee for - and then not support it. -
..alright, not really. However, it is at least (partial) energy damage, and it takes pink coloring very well; it LOOKS like it could be a psi melee set. Something to think about for character concepts, in any case.
-
Quote:The trouble is, this happens for me on both main and test, both installed and tested on clean, EXTERNAL (as in, install the OSX to a seperate, external drive) copies. I dug around and found the preference talk before, and tried it, and have gotten exactly nowhere with it; same issues of crashing.I use an i7 Macbook Pro and I managed to solve the issue without resorting to Boot Camp.
The root of the problem is how Cider obtains the feature settings for the video driver - sometimes it gets the feature set wrong somehow, and then it caches those settings so repeated launches don't fix it.
The workaround for now is to toss out the Preferences (referenced in the link above) but hopefully Cider will come up with a permanent fix someday.
Also, didn't someone determine that there was a particular subfolder within Preferences that needed to be tossed out? Because if you tossed out the entire Preferences folder, you'd lose all your stuff every time it freaked out and this had to be deleted.
EDIT: For the heck of it, I went ahead and cleared out the entire Preferences folder, rather than just the p_drive subfolders I'd read about before. After changing back resolution, turning GeoBuffer back off, etc, I'd swear I'm crashing more now. -
I just got through a bout with NCSoft tech support over these exact issues.
They're blaming nVidia drivers in 10.6. And.. that's it. It's a driver problem, not their fault, nothing they can/will do about it.
Their advice was (and I can pull up the response and quote), "If you can play stably in Windows via Boot Camp, you should play in Windows". -
I can't come up with character names.
I hate this.
* stares at ID screen of character creation some more, trying to find something that is both 1) good and 2) NOT ALREADY TAKEN * -
That's.. unexpected.
It's counting down pretty fast, but I wonder how slammed Freedom is going to be come tomorrow. -
This is maybe my favourite guide I've read over the years. I really like it when someone writes a guide to playing a thing, not a character recipe with a bunch of stats.
Unfortunately, Warshades are entirely too gothy-gloomy for me, so I stick with a Peacebringer. Which is why...
Do one up like Dechs, here. I'd love to read it. What you've outlined on the PB method (all melee, all the time) is what drew me to the AT and got me to stick with it, so insights on how to play it better would be greatly appreciated. -
I've gotten no response yet. I'm going to try paging a GM or something, tomorrow. I've held off using the powers, because I don't want to get banned for "exploiting" a bug, but if they're not going to care, I'll use with abandon.
And hopefully try and convince them to apply it account-wide. ;P -
I'd forgotten about the lack of store map pips. That's what made vidiotmaps such a lifesaver, I recall now.
Haven't seen these mentioned:
* The zones were crowded. Yes, yes, there's still plenty of server population, fine. Not like it was, though. There were heroes EVERYWHERE on the streets, in every zone. Mind you, a lot of this was due to people street-sweeping as if it was Everquest or something (rather than doing "door missions"), but still.
* If you were a defender, you were Empathy - excuse me, I mean a healer - or you did not get teams. At all. "Debuff? Never heard of it, how much can you heal?" "Forcefields? Look, do they.. do they heal me, or something? No? Learn to play, noob! *kick*"
* Every scrapper was Martial Arts or Claws.
* There were four kinds of characters: blasters (mostly energy, @&*##$^ knockback), Fire/ tankers, scrappers, and healers.
I also want to say that the team-finding system was either nonexistant, or might as well have been nonexistant for how useless it was.
Also, weren't you unable to decide how to apply your supergroup colors? You couldn't run in SG mode and not be decked out with whatever stupid color scheme and emblem the leader had picked, yeah? -
Quote:Yes. See the first part of my post, which explains this.Announcement from back in April.
Having a new (<3 days old, as in, created this last Sunday) character suddenly be awarded another year and a half of badges - a character, mind you, NOT an account - seems to be some other, different issue. -
So, my account was one of the ones that got a vet reward boost by accident. Which has been quite handy! And I dutifully filed a bug report, and then found out it was a known issue and no one cared.
So far so good.
I was playing for a little while today, then hopped onto an alt to move some items around before deleting that character, then hopped onto a new character I've been playing.
And just got awarded everything up to 54 months. (my account is logged at 36-and-change)
I don't see an announcement about this anywhere, so I'm assuming it's a weird bug, but.. anyone else have this happen? It was particularly weird because I was logged in literally thirty seconds ago on one character, changed characters, and then got awarded the badges. Very strange.
EDIT: For extra weirdness: it only appears to have happened on one character!
EDIT 2: And it's definitely that character only, as one of those badges is for the COV pre-order helmets, and they aren't present for me at the server character creation page. I filed a bug report, but I'm still curious to see if anyone else knows what the heck happened. -
I set a regular block (i.e. not the room-defined walls, but setting one grid section of a room) to a Wall, and placed Map 1 and Map 2 on it. Now I can't remove them, however, can't even select them, and the game knows they're there because I also can't modify that block (i.e. change wall/not wall, ceiling height, et cetera). Any ideas how to fix this?
Follow-up question 1: if I delete a room, I assume it auto-sells everything in there, right? The prestige doesn't vanish?
Follow-up question 2: I assume if I delete a salvage rack, and there's salvage on it, that salvage disappears, correct? -
So, I'm pretty sure this is related to my regular crashing.
This is from the edit-base parts selection. In the lower-left corner of each block is the item, which appears fine. Surrounding the object is a texture mess.
Additionally, I'll often get surrounding corruption before a crash, when playing: the windows in a police station will display letters or billboards, or I'll get what looks to be a character map displayed over the screen.
Per another post, turning off Geometry Buffer stabilised things a lot, as does /unloadgfx, but all that does is delay a crash, not prevent them.
This is on a 24" iMac with an nVidia 8800 and 4 GB RAM. I'm not running any particularly special graphics settings (I keep shadows and water reflections off, because I just don't care). I've tried Verify Files but that comes up fine. I may try and reinstall, but I have little hope this will be the solution.
Going to file a support ticket, but.. does anyone else have an idea of what I might try? The OS is updated and this kind of thing happens both at a cold start and after playing for awhile, so it's not a heat issue.
