Flash, corrupt, crash!

Ever since I got my shiny new sexy i7 Macbook Pro with all it's high-end specs and glory, my client has been crashing like a poorly made paper airplane.

I've disabled FAA and geometry buffers, have nothing set to Ultra (just high), and run windowed (for multitasking reasons).

What usually happens is, my game lags and freezes once or twice. Then, the entire screen flashes black. Then the game textures begin corrupting (ever see the side of Cole's tower turn into Scarred Face 2? scary stuff, man). Then my client either:

A) gives the Assertion Failure dialog box, or
B) quits with no error and generates about 75,000+ pageouts from my RAM.

Any ideas?

Failing that, I just got my girlfriend a cooling pad and boot-camped it. It runs 100x better

Well done.
I have a 50 in every AT, but Scrappers and Dominators are my favorites.

I just got through a bout with NCSoft tech support over these exact issues.

They're blaming nVidia drivers in 10.6. And.. that's it. It's a driver problem, not their fault, nothing they can/will do about it.

Their advice was (and I can pull up the response and quote), "If you can play stably in Windows via Boot Camp, you should play in Windows".

I use an i7 Macbook Pro and I managed to solve the issue without resorting to Boot Camp.

The root of the problem is how Cider obtains the feature settings for the video driver - sometimes it gets the feature set wrong somehow, and then it caches those settings so repeated launches don't fix it.

The workaround for now is to toss out the Preferences (referenced in the link above) but hopefully Cider will come up with a permanent fix someday.

Thanks, Manga. Glad you're on the same rig I am. Makes your advice a lot more applicable.

The trouble is, this happens for me on both main and test, both installed and tested on clean, EXTERNAL (as in, install the OSX to a seperate, external drive) copies. I dug around and found the preference talk before, and tried it, and have gotten exactly nowhere with it; same issues of crashing.

Also, didn't someone determine that there was a particular subfolder within Preferences that needed to be tossed out? Because if you tossed out the entire Preferences folder, you'd lose all your stuff every time it freaked out and this had to be deleted.

EDIT: For the heck of it, I went ahead and cleared out the entire Preferences folder, rather than just the p_drive subfolders I'd read about before. After changing back resolution, turning GeoBuffer back off, etc, I'd swear I'm crashing more now.

I only ended up needing to reset my resolution and texture quality.

Well, the external drive was NCSoft Support's request during troubleshooting. Test Server also had the same problem on a clean install, so.. I'm not saying that wiping the Preferences folder doesn't work - because apparently it has worked for some - but it definitely is not working for me.

However, until I tested it under XP via Boot Camp, support was also 100% ready to blame my hardware. When I tested it under XP and then passed along some of the threads in this forum, that's when they came up with the nVidia driver idea.

What this tells me is they have no idea what's going on, and the complete lack of support (and cluelessness regarding issues that are posted in their own forums) means I'll likely let my subcription lapse, and tell others who are thinking about getting the game to play under OSX to skip it. You don't sell a program - particularly one you want a subscription fee for - and then not support it.

It's strange that you're crashing more now that you deleted the preferences file; I trashed, emptied the Safari cache, and did the dscacheutil -flushcache (sic) thing Cuppa mentioned in their guide, and I haven't crashed since.

nunix, the next correct troubleshooting step after disconnecting the external drive is try creating a new *user* on your computer, make sure to give it admin privileges, and log in as that user to run CoH. Let me know if that improves the situation any.

As for Support, most of the accurate Mac information has come from a combination of us, and focused testing when there's a problem. Over time they're getting better, and they are listening. Keep submitting support requests for issues.

That said, their database is lacking in some areas, and I've been working to submit corrections when possible. Which also means, over time, their knowledge base improves as well. Patience and persistence are key.

This.. doesn't make any sense why it would be different. To make sure I'm clear: I didn't just install COH on an external drive. I formatted an external drive as bootable, installed a clean copy of OSX on it, and then installed COH on that. It was, essentially, a 100% fresh install of both the OS and the game. I tried this both with launch 10.6 and with a copy all Software Update'd.

I get that running off a firewire connection might, in some way, cause problems.. but I would expect these to be new, different problems, not the exact same ones I have now.

Adding an external firewire drive creates the possibility of all sorts of problems that might mask any fixes you might have made. There's the extra hardware driver, all those chipsets that translate between the drive and firewire and the computer, and the speed of the drive, etc.

Creating a new user limits those variables to just a few, and they'll have negligible impact on whether CoH works or not. Also, it's easier to retrieve a console log that way.

I am running an i7 MacBook Pro and have all the same problems as nunix. None of the suggestions have worked for me. I am not running the game on an external drive, however. Thorwing out the preferences does nothing to fix the lagging and crashing. I tried to download the test server from the link provided and when I launch it, it just pulls up the regular game. I was directed at one point to a thread addressing that issue, and I couldn't figure that fix out because the files that were supposed to be changed were different in my download. Gah. The only way I can play the game lag and crash free is in safe mode.

I sent a help ticket to tech support about this, and they were absolutely no help. The asked me to attach a copy of my system profiler file in RTF to them, which I did about 5 times, and they kept not getting it. At that point they told me to open up a new help ticket and reference the current one. WTH???

So, I have given up. I play in safe mode now and the game looks crappy.

I think I may have a very substantial clue on this issue, but I'm going to need some extra data first.

Everyone who reads this, click the City of Heroes application ONCE and then select Get Info from the File menu in the Finder - or use Cmd-I.

Tell me which version number of CoH you have, which Mac model/processor/graphics you have, and whether or not you have the crashing issue.

As I've tested so far on my Macbook Pro/Core i7/nvidia 330M (15 min running from RWZ to base to Pocket D & through a mission map):

1.0.3069 - No crashing
1.0.4462 - No crashing

Mac Pro, quad-core Xeon, GeForce GT 120, version 1.0.4462. No crashes yet, but I'll let you know if they show up.
