interesting thing, the source for this information appears to be Anandtech / Dailytech. The problem I have with this is that AT/DT basically have an axe to grind against AMD/ATi. Case in point in a server processor test a few years they intentionally used a software package that had a known performance problem on AMD processors and passed it off as "factual real world performance", which raised a lot of eyes in the *Nix communities and various forum posts on places like Mepislovers to the effect of "those numbers aren't right"
I used to have fun documenting various times AT/DT was caught lying their pants off back in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
Given AT/DT's reputation, anytime anybody on that site says ANYTHING about AMD/ATi, it's best to have a 55 gallon drum of salt on hand.
As to whether or not AMD would drop the ATi brand-name, I could see AMD dropping the brand from the Fusion Processors. I just don't see AMD dropping the brand from it's add-in graphics cards anytime soon. -
Careful jet. Check the other threads he's started: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/searc...&starteronly=1
He's been spamming the forums with an agenda to get a two free respecs from the developers instead of one. This thread reads like yet another attempt to push his agenda. -
CoH only uses two threads, so more than two processing threads ddoes nothing for the game. That means more than two cores does little for the game.
It's unlikely that the developers will pursue adding additional threads for the time being since they want to maintain compatibility as much as possible with the existing install base. -
The Nvidia Network Access Manager basically was a hardware / software firewall built into NForce3 and later chipsets. It would install and start it's own internal semi apache-based server if memory serves. It caused hell on earth when I was Sitel for Cox with network access issues.
I'm un-aware of any particular error in running it with City of Hereos, or at least I never experienced a problem. Uninstalling it is a pretty good idea even if you are not behind a hardware router since it generally causes more problems than it helps with. -
As far as I am aware:
Leaving Praetoria and choosing Villain will unlock Faction Exclusive Villain Archtypes.
You will only be able to start a Faction Exclusive Villain Archtype as a Villain.
Leaving Praetoria and choosing Hero will unlock Faction Exclusive Hero Archtypes.
You will only be able to start a Faction Exclusive Hero Archtype as a Hero.
* * *
As of this posting there are no known plans to enable Faction Exclusive Archtypes to start as a Praetorian.
Nor are there any known plans to enable Faction Exclusive Archtypes to start as an Opposite faction. E.G. The Kheldian Archtypes will not be able to start as Villains :: The Arachnos Archtypes will not be able to start as Heroes.
* * *
As of this posting it is known if leaving Praetoria, choosing one faction, and then using the Morality System to swap factions, will result in the unlocking of Epic Archtypes from both Factions. E.G. : if you leave Praetoria and Choose Villain to unlock the Arachnos, and then convert to Hero to unlock the Kheldians.
Theoretically it should... I just don't know of anybody that's tried. -
Quote:maybe. But I'm supposed to be the expert on CoH and Cedega, and come on, I practically invite players to ask me questions over it.The "debug assertion failed" that would crash the updater was "fixed" long enough ago for the "geom.pigg" thing to fall out of the scope of memory. I fought the "fixing files" loop for at least a month before I made the connection.
Nothing about which to beat yourself up.

Quote:right now Multi-GPU does nothing for City of Heroes from either ATi or Nvidia. My GTX 295 won't use both GPUs. Is this game incapable of doing so?
You can force AFR on Nvidia cards by modifying driver values in tools like nHancer, but doing so caries the normal risk of "muck about with the driver or the hardware and don't be surprised if things go completely wrong" -
a little bit more information about your computer would be most helpful:

Okay. $1700 price-point.
Quote:The good news is, you can have the most powerful laptop GPU currently available on the market in this price range.I'm in the market for a gaming laptop, to play games from CoX to Crysis type. Shooting for around $1700.00 US but i'm a tad flexible. Getting something from Dell is a first choice due to my location, but again flexible.
That would be the RadeonHD 5870 Mobility, and Newegg has one from MSI for $1600.
Granted, that is an MSI model.
You can find an Asus model with the RadeonHD 5870 from Mwave for the $1600 pricepoint.
JR also has the Asus model for around the same pricepoint.
Dell will sell you a laptop with a RadeonHD 5870 mobility edition, but you'll be starting at $1800 for the Alienware brand name.
If it was my money on the line, I'd buy the Asus. It's got a slightly slower processor than the MSI, but it's got a larger screen, and Asus products tend to be built to last. -
... how long have you been sitting on that photochop?

It's been suggested, and shot down, multiple times because it's a horrible idea made by players that don't have the first clue about what the blaster secondary sets are designed for.
The developers have never said "never" to doing a martial arts themed manipulation set. Then again, the developers rarely say "never" to anything.
They have, however, expressed the opinion that the melee heavy Energy Manipulation is an aberration within the blaster secondary sets and, and that any future manipulation sets will be based more on the Psionic Manipulation model with limited straight melee attacks, more ranged attacks, and a greater focus on soft-controls. It has been stated that due to the cottage rule, Energy Manipulation won't likely be revamped to make it into more of a manipulation set.
The developers have also indicated in the past that blasters will not be receiving any native damage reduction powers outside of Epic / Patron pools, nor will blaster's be receiving any anti-mez powers outside of the current Defiance model.
So, if you can come up with a manipulation set that only has at most three straight damage attacks, at least one ranged attack, maybe a weak stun / damage pbaoe, some soft control, has an immobilize for the first power that has to be taken, and includes build-up, then hey, feel free to pitch something that features a punch and a kick at it's base. -
Quote:Honestly? The fan. What's the difference between those two sapphire models? I think the one I ordered was the -3L?
I doubt I'll ever touch that game, but the reviews looked pretty solid for the Sapphire at that price, I just wasn't familiar with that brand name (although I think I recall you saying in another thread that they were the reference board makers or something?).
The one I originally linked to, the 100283-3L uses a fan mounted on top of the GPU.
The second one, the 100283L, has the fan at the rear of the card and the card is fully ducted.
Ducted fans cost a few bucks more than non-ducted fans. Are they worth it? Well, depends on whether or not you are intending to overclock the system or not.
Anyways, Sapphire is basically the closest you can get to an AMD First Party card. They do pretty much all of AMD's prototype boards, and typically handle the stuff that is manufactured as an AMD part. Case in point, when AMD lost the HDMI class-action lawsuit over the x1x00 series cards, it was Sapphire that was tapped to send out replacement graphics cards. -
Quote:Arcanaville hit on one of the key points:Doesn't look very competitive against something like "One with Shield", "Overload", "Hibernate"
Any of The other defense set teir 9's would help you more than Elude.
Not everybody is running soft-capped Super Reflexes. Not everybody in the game is using IO buffs.Quote:But most SR scrappers are not soft capped, and I wouldn't trade out Elude from the SR set for another tier 9 which would be weaker for most of the other SR players out there.
Not if you are using SO's, which from the amount of information we can get out of the developers every now and then, is basically the majority of the game. One of the key design problems is that the developers cannot balance the entire game or a single power-set against a semi-common IO buff build. If you actually ARE interested in the design theory Posi's got a wonderful post on the subject: http://www.mmodesigner.com/?p=63Quote:sounds like Elude has gotten long in the tooth and should get rebalanced.
The basic concept boils down to being able to predict what the minimum amount of protection any single player will have in any single situation. The ED caps give the developers some hard-figures on what to base each players potential capabilities at any given level.
Yes, there are some power-sets that just don't make sense against SO's. The pre-I18 Fiery Aura defense set and Martial Arts melee sets for example. The current Dark-Armor set for another example.
For the vast number of players with only SO's in their builds, Elude is still a valuable part of their defensive sets. From the perspective of SO's, Elude is not long in the tooth, and no it does not need to be rebalanced. -
Quote:For reference, outside of Diamond Multimdia, nobody makes a bad ATi card. Gigabyte is a decent manufacturer, but it's not why I wouldn't buy that particular model. Tango Down is MSRP'd at $40 through ATi right now. The Gigabyte Card offers an instant $10 off and a $20 mail-in-rebate. So you'll pay about $150+ shipping for the Gigabyte HD 5770.Ahh I was comparing a $200 Gigabyte 5830 to this 5770 @ 170/150rebate.
That Sapphire looks like a winner though. Done.
This Sapphire 5770 Model comes with an instant $30 off the $180 price point, a $15 Mail-In Rebate, AND the Tango Down game. So, you could have the exact same GPU, for $135+shipping. -

Drivers from 2009 don't strike you as an issue?
Quote:UPDATE YOUR GRAPHICS DRIVERS!!!Driver Version: 8.15.11.8593
Driver Date: 7/13/2009 6:16:11 PM -
Honestly, on a Core2 Duo... I'd have a really hard time justifying any more powerful card over a 5770.
Case in point, I've got an Asus F3Ka laptop. This laptop came with a Turion64 x2 TL-60 @ 2ghz, a Mobility RadeonHD 2600, and has a native screen resolution of 1280*800.
With the default settings under the DX11 API, Unigine's Tropics 1.3 Benchmark posts a score of 226.
With the default settings under the OpenGL API, Tropic's 1.3 posted a score 197.
Even when I dropped to the Incredibly low resolution of 640*480, I only scored 357 under the OpenGL API, and 406 with the DirectX API.
With Shaders set to low, OpenGL scored 344, and DirectX scored 323.
If the system was GPU limited, turning down the Shaders or lowering the resolution should have improved performance... only it didn't. The system isn't limited by the GPU, at least under Unigine. The benchmark is largely limited by the processor.
Most modern games are going to be like that on a Core 2. Your processor is going to prevent you from scaling up resolutions and details long before a 5770 graphics card becomes a bottleneck.
* * *
Now, if you are buying for the future, I have problems recommending the 5830 right now. It's a binned market filling part. I'm not saying I know what AMD's product roadmap looks like, but the 5770 is going to put less of a dent on your wallet now, and you probably won't be thinking man, if I had just waited a couple of weeks before buying.
The 5770 isn't a bad card either. With the right processor, it will do 1920*1200 in pretty much every-game either on the market or known to be hitting the market over the next year.
Thing is, a good 5770, if you shop carefully in the US, will be around $130 like this Sapphire that I'm linking too.
A good GTX 460, if you shop carefully in the US, will be around $100 MORE at $230, such as this EVGA model, or this Asus Model.
A 5830 is about $70 more than a 5770, such as this Sapphire model at $200, or this $190 Asus if you use the mail in rebate.
Basically, I'm not convinced that long term, you are going to be better off getting something more powerful than a 5770. You'll save around $60~$70 straight out between the 5770 and 5830, money that you could turn around later for a better processor or a second 5770. -
Quote:That would be me mistyping a 2 instead of 4. Fixed. Thanks for the replies and je_saist, WOW, what a reply.
re: GTX 265: Wasn't even on my radar, I know nothing about that one.
When you are ready to buy for the rest of the system, just ask.Quote:re: upgrades: I will be upgrading the rest of the system eventually, hopefully inside the next 6 months. Right now, I can probably afford to upgrade the card - cards generally last me about ~2 years. I will probably grab an athlon x4 or x6 - whatever is sweet in the $150-180 price point when I can afford to do that. So, figure I'll want the card I get to play well with that as well.
Depending on your resolution, this may be your best bang-for-buck. A 5770 should be able to drive these games with most options turned on in 1680*1050, even against a Core2.Quote:From your description, it sounds like the 5770 will do exactly what I need, and I can save that extra $$ that I would spend on a 5830 (your wording, and the other poster who mention the NV driver issues, seems to support the ATI option, which is what I was leaning toward as well). I don't really play any games that are more intense than CoX (yet, GW2 will be the next "new" game I pick up).
Yes, Yes, and No.Quote:If I get a Crossfire-ready mobo, I can always pick up a second 5770 to bump up my performance in a year, instead of say, a brand new card? (Or does it require an exact match on cards...which could make things difficult in a year).
First, the no. Right now multi-gpu rigs do nothing for City of Heroes. There's no guarantee that Crossfire or SLI will ever be supported under the City of Heroes game
Second, the first yes. ATi's crossfire is not as... restrictive as Nvidia SLI. With Nvidia SLI will only run when you have two cards from the same vendor. With ATi crossfire? Well... AMD typically just bases Crossfire support on model:

As long as you have the right model of chip, even if it's the not the exact same model, ATi Crossfire will still largely give a performance boost in supported games.
So, second yes, if you get a Crossfire compatible motherboard, you can just drop in a 57xx series card sometime in the future.
Also, don't worry about the motherboard being optimized for multi-gpu performance. HardOCP recently ran a 2x SLI Geforce GTX 480 setup against an x4/x4 motherboard (equivelent to a PCIE-gen-1 x8/x8) setup... and even in the Triple-Screen 3D Vision Surround resolutions the x4/x4 PCIE bus pretty much did nothing to the frame rates: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/...x16x16_vs_x4x4
So if you pick up a motherboard with a 16x/8x PCIE Gen 2, or even 8x/8x PCIE Gen 2 configuration, you will not experience a performance difference in single monitor resolutions.
For this you'll just have to yank open the side of the case and look.Quote:What I'm not sure of at the moment is how big my PSU is at home, as I may need to upgrade that as well.
From a pure power draw, if you can run a 9600 GT, the 5770 should also run. -
Quote:a Fix like that wouldn't go into the patch notes.Correct, either activity seems to artificially accelerate the 7-day waiting period and the badge awards (assuming, as noted above, the toon has completed the appropriate morality mission).
Unless it's been stealth-fixed in the past couple of patches (nothing stated explicity in either patch notes about this issue).
Developers policy is not to list exploit fixes in the notes.
