New Computer-Cores versus Frequency

Ok, so I've tried searching the web, but this debate seems to lean both ways so I decided to ask the community in which it would matter to me. With UM and GR released my computer needs some love, unfortunately for me that means a new computer. I pretty much solely run City of Heroes with an occasion demo here and there.

I've seen that both Intel and AMD have now released 6 core processors as well as the plethora of dual and quads already out there. I've not seen anywhere how many cores COx has been optimized for so my question is this: for running COx, is it better to have as many cores as possible or a higher core frequency?

CoH only uses two threads, so more than two processing threads ddoes nothing for the game. That means more than two cores does little for the game.

It's unlikely that the developers will pursue adding additional threads for the time being since they want to maintain compatibility as much as possible with the existing install base.

There's benefit in 4 cores over a 2 core CPU in that Windows and whatever other programs you may run (Ventrilo, Herostats, web browser etc) can use two cores while COH uses the other two.

I really doubt you'd get any use out of 6 cores unless you were trying to run some processor hungry aps at the same time; you aren't trying to encode video, apply Photoshop filters or the like while playing I assume?

Short answer is to go with the higher clocked quad core over a hex core CPU. It'll actually save you money and it's faster for what you want.

COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

Thanks for the replies. I did forget that I on occasion will run Mumble so the idea of splitting cores there makes sense.

The basic idea is to save money where I can as that will mean the sooner I can get my hands on a new computer.
