I don't expect to be able to spend much more than $100 for a new card, and even then, it may have to wait, depending on fundage. Looking at NewEgg's listing for the 9800 GT, I notice that it comes in two "flavors": 512 MB Video RAM and 1 GB Video RAM. Obviously, the 1 GB VRAM will be superior, but if funds dictate that I can't afford that, will a card with 512 MB VRAM work?

    Thanks in advance!
If your price limit is $100, read here: http://hardocp.com/article/2010/01/1...hd_5670_review

Also, don't get too hung up on video memory size. The speed of the memory and the system bus, as well as the bit-width of the memory bus are also important components.

Just because a video card comes with a full gig, or two gigs of ram... does not mean that it can actually use that video memory. Okay, yes, most of the rebadged 8800 GPU's, such as the 9800 series and the GTS 250, and the GT 240, can utilize more than 512mb video memory.

The next question then becomes screen size. If you are only pushing 1650*1080 or a lower resolution, don't bust your wallet going for the largest memory sizes. Only go for the larger memory sizes if your starting resolution is 1920*1200 or higher.

edit: Okay, since I've received a couple of tells from friends who were confused, here's a breakdown of this joke. Yes, this is a *nix based joke. Control-Alt-F1 is the command used to drop from most modern Linux systems to the command prompt. This is followed by logging in as the root of the machine. Top is a program that lists all of the currently running processes. The two arrow key presses are cycling through Top until the processes are sorted by those using the greatest amount of system power. Q quits out of the Top program, which is followed by running a Kill -9. Kill -9 basically means stop whatever process with no further questions, and stop it now. 4N1M4+3, or rather, ANIMATE, isn't actually a real process ID. It's a joke based on BaB's being an animator. In most Linux systems, when you kill a process, you'll need to restart it again. If you are doing this manually, this can involve a long string of process identifiers. Some critical commands, however, can use a start(app) identifier from pretty much anywhere in the directory lineup... such as startx. So again, another joke in here about the ANIMATE package being important enough to assign a start script to. Control-Alt-F7 takes the user back to the running GUI session.

Nivdia's drivers can leverage any G8x architecture card for PhysX, which helps Nvidia get around a particular caveat of using PhysX, at least on the current drivers.

You can't actually enable hardware PhysX and hardware accelerated gaming on a single GPU. Nvidia says you can... but as was found out in Mirrors Edge single GPU testing, it didn't exactly work as advertised. Enabling hardware PhysX on a single GPU often lead to frame-rate problems. Hardware PhysX works best when it has a GPU of it's own to work with. In my own case with my triple SLI setup on GTS 250, I often get the rendering performance of 2x SLI in PhysX GPU enabled games, and performance goes up to around where 3x rendering should be if I turn PhysX off.

given the dev's unwillingness to change stuff that has already been published into the game, I would suspect that the static tails aren't going to be taken out.

So perhaps I mis-spoke in how I phrased my statement.

If BaB's is working on animating tails, I suspect that you will be out of luck in having both a cape effect and animated tail effect.

That does not mean that you will not still be able to have a static tail with a moving cape effect.

that's... actually not a half bad idea... I'm already thinking of a way to spin it. How does this idea sound:

Dr. Aeon, in conjunction with Portal Corporation and Crey Labs, have decided to monetize portal technology for Fantasy Vacations. Against the wishes and advisement of both the Freedom Phalanx and Vanguard Organizations, Portal Corp has programmed portals in Architect Entertainment buildings to point at special zones inside the Shadow Shard. In these new zones players will find water slides, pools, and floating-island-side cafe's.

They'll also find new Task Force / Strike Force contacts.

For those of a Heroic Nature, there's a task force to investigate both the Aeon Corporation and the Crey Corporation for illegal actions in the shard. Players find out that Dr. Aeon and the Countess are working together to summon aspects of Rularuu, and the players must defeat not only the evil doctor, they must take on a Rularuu Empowered Countess.

For those of a more evil bent, there's a strike force given by an Aeon Lab technician. The villains are out to steal Portal Corp's portal technology, and wind up summoning forth an aspect of Rularuu... in Cap'Au'Diable.

As a new co-op task force, Vanguard is on site, and is concerned about Rularuu using the multitude of new portals to break through to Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. They want players with high security or threat levels to venture forth into the portions of the Shard beyond the Storm Palace, striking into the heart of the Rularuu dimension. What players find there causes as many questions as it answers.

Several of the large channels that have been "forced" to uproot, such as Triumph Watch or Victory Badges, would have been fine if moderators could have removed joined accounts that were no longer active.

It's pretty much intentionally sketchy, and Unfortunately, or fortunately, all the information on the Ban Pan is pretty much found in those two articles. If you're looking for answers on why they took over Astoria, why they are on Striga, and why they have a presence on Sharkhead... sorry, but there's no reasons available. If you want to know how the Banished Ones found Adamastor and brought him to Dark Astoria... sorry, no information is available.

The presumption on the part of many players is that Astoria is going to be revamped in a future issue, and that a task force will be introduced pitting the players against the Pantheon itself. Supposedly this future Task Force will answer the questions surrounding the Pantheon, including why they took over Dark Astoria and what's up with Adamastor.

The implementation of Barracuda / Dr. Kahn also gave rise to the rumor that there will be a Villain Strike Force in which villains will use Ourobous to locate Adamastor for the Banished Ones, and that it's the villains who unleased Adamastor upon Paragon by traveling through time.

Okay, if your head hurts after that, it's no weirder than Heroes being responsible for helping the Center over-throw the 5th Column.

Anyways, if you read the plaques in DA, some of the plaques reference Spanky Rabinowitz and his connections with the Banished Pantheon: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Spanky

It would not surprise me that if the developers choose to pursue the Story of Dark Astoria and the Banished Ones that players will end up fighting Mayor Spanky.

okay, aside from replacing the part about not refunding money spent on transfers with standard boilerplate warnings, how is this different from the way I phrased it?
  15. Going to echo some of what Adeon is saying here. Once you get into the mid-20's, have stamina, and can slot SO recharges, most of the ranged damage sets that I've played to level 50 (Archery, Rad Blast, Dark Blast, Electric Blast) tend to develop natural attack chains that preclude Interrupt Intensive attacks. That being said, I have taken LRM Rocket on my Ice / PSI blaster as the Ice Blast set lacks a sniping power, and there always will be cases in the game where a snipe power is useful.

Corruptors, however, tend to be a in a tight spot on powers they have available. One of the things to consider is that corruptors are the primary buff / debuff archtype for the villain side. This creates a duality trap for the archtype. Some teams depend on corruptors to act like a defender and lay on their secondary power set. Other teams expect corruptors to act like a blaster and pour on the damage. Some teams want corruptors to be a bit of both.

The damage problem is fairly complicated by the sniping sets not really being... that good on the IO front. Some of them, like Calibrated Accuracy which is the only set that offers an IO +acc bonus from memory, slam one attribute hard into ED and leave other aspects critically weak. In the case of Calibrated Accuracy, you get tons of +acc, but almost no damage. Sting of the Manticore isn't that great on the IO set bonus either, although it does offer a 7.5% recharge bonus at pump 5... which is actually useful. Really though, you can get better buffs in the ranged damage set, as well as some better procs.

On Corruptors, the problem worsens. Case in point for me are the numbers between a Stalker and a Corruptor, both of which have Moonbeam. Stalker's can get it as a Patron Power.

At level 30, my corruptor has a base Moonbeam damage of 83.
At level 50, the base damage is 115.

At level 30, my stalker would have a base moonbeam damage of 92.
At level 50, my stalker has a base moonbeam damage of 127.

Let me repeat that. My STALKER... a class designed to fight IN MELEE DISTANCE... has a more powerful SNIPING ATTACK than an archtype designed to fight from a distance. And it's not just limited to the sniping attack. Dark Blast is in the same spot.

On my corruptor, dark blast does 32.26 damage at level 30
At level 50, it would do 41.71 base

At level 30, my stalker would have a base dark blast damage of 40.35
At level 50, that base damage would be 55.61.

In addition to a higher base damage, my stalker gets build up, and land critical damage from hide. So basically, I get double damage from hide, and I can trigger an 80% boost on top of that.

Now, Corruptors do get scourge, and theoretically, once an enemy goes under 50% health a sniping attack would do double damage. However, in my own personal experience, while I can pull off moonbeam in the middle of a fight, since I can floor most to-hit values, there's the ever so slight problem that I can count on both hands the number of times moonbeam has scourged in 20 some levels. That's it. Only 8 or 9 times have I moonbeamed an enemy under 50% health and gotten a scourge effect.

Okay, there are arguments to be made here that this is really a fault of the corruptors inherent, a fault of my timing, or a fault of something else, and that it's not really a problem with the sniping set. There's also the point to be made that as a corruptor, I can debuff my enemies... which my stalker... can't.

Anyways. Since most sniping powers have pitiful Damage Per Activation, they don't proc against scourge like I think they should, and I can understand why the snipe powers are generally the first to be thrown "under the bus" to make teaming partners happy.

Hopefully this will also explain to you (and those searching the forums) on why Snipe Attacks are the first to be tossed out of many ranged damage builds.

I think so. I don't think I've ever been in a job that had it off though. So the point of it has always been lost on me.

Anyways, something I do find interesting in the OP's post. One of the tactics I've taken to in my writings, and something you'll find in several analytic writings from the likes of Gartner or Morgan-Stanley, is the deliberate use of verb tenses to support ones point of view. For example, when addressing game developers and publishers now, I stopped asking if there would be a Linux Client for their games. I started asking WHEN a client was going to be released. It's 2009 (now 2010), and even Microsoft admitted last year the Linux desktop market was larger than Apple, a claim Apple, of all companies, did not contest... Given Apple's love of marketshare, if they were told they were #3 in a market-share where they thought they were #2? That should have caused some-sort of firestorm. It didn't.

The technique of changing up verbs and using definitive verbs rather than questioning verbs is a great way to catch PR reps off guard, since questioning verbs allow a competent spokesperson to form a vauge answer. It's often a good feeling to watch a PR rep trip over their tongue as they figure out how to answer a definitive question rather than one that leaves them open to being vague.

It's also a great way to forward an unpopular idea. I think it's quite clear from the backlash that occurs everytime a server merge is brought up that the majority of the game doesn't want a merge. By treating the server merge as a definite event, rather than an questionable event, changes the focus of the question. Since the players don't know the developers long term plans, they are effectively excised from answering the original question properly.

In the same manner, a developer or a moderator cannot step up and say that server merges are not going to happen. When the development team instituted paid transfers to the game, they had to issue the boilerplate warnings that at some point in the future the game could go server-less or some of the servers could be merged. Essentially the developers cannot confirm, or deny, that server-merges won't happen. Server-merges aren't planned, but, just because the dev-staff doesn't intend to merge, does not mean that they are setting up the infrastructure and capabilities if they have to merge... or again, go server-less with a cloud-computing style of game hosting.

Now, we, as players, can be pretty sure that a server-less cloud-style enviroment isn't in the game's immediate future. Unless something has changed with the Going Rogue development, the actual servers are still running Microsoft software underneath... and... come on... Microsoft can't do cloud computing. They really can't do server-computing that well either, but hey, what's a little maintence time every week.

So with players unable to effectively answer a definitive question on when Server Merges will happen, and the developement staff (probably) unable to commit to an answer on whether or not server merges would, or could happen... the lack of a direct answer basically enables the original poster, or those convinced merges will happen "soon", to have a thread they can point to where the idea of a server merge wasn't actually shot down.

... with that said, to repeat myself from planetside.

    DEATH BEFORE MERGE! KONRIED FOREVER!

Of course, other questions are raised, such as the CPU, GPU and system memory count, the base operating system, and the resolution of the test system. There's also the further consideration of server lag, how much traffic is being generated in and out for each separate animation, as well as server processing lag.

Something I do wonder... "now"... is whether or not the fixes going into the current graphics engine will improve performance on some of these graphic effects. Maybe a more effecient rendering method...

I'm afraid you are going to be a bit out of luck on this part. It's been made clear that the devs are trying to stick to a one-animated costume part per avatar system. This is often given as the reason on why there's no animated hair available to players. Yes, Ghost Widow has animated hair, but her hair is actually a cape moved up and fitted to the top of her head, similar to how Trench-coats, tail-coats, and waist-capes are capes that have been moved down to trigger their attachment point at a different location.

If BaB's and Jay are working on animated tails, I suspect they are waiting for one of the coders working on Going Rogue to become available and implement a similar trigger that the existing capes / trenchcoats use.

There's also a possibility that animated tails could be moved into Back Detail.
