  1. The Penelope Yin of the Mother of Mayhem Trial has got to be Praetorian. She's wearing her Praetorian costume, she's in the Praetorian Dimension, and virtually every other character throughout the trials, save for Desdemona, is Praetorian.

I cannot discount the possibility that the person-in-question is, indeed, Penelope Yin, but I am more than skeptical that it is her, regardless of Praetorian or Primal status.

Minor character, yes, but "much beloved?" Not sure she fits that description. Not that she isn't beloved, but I think there are others that may fulfill that description more than she does.

That said, in the CoH chronological universe, she would be "coming of age" about now, the Vindicators are in need of a new Psion, and Sister Psyche is the next target and has had dealings with Penelope.

Personally, I'd rather have Blue Steel. (Not that he's any more beloved than Yin.)
  3. It is a cool power, but I'll skip it. It does not fit any of my character concepts. I already have Rocket Board for vanity toggle-disabling travel, I do not need another one.

I am rather surprised at how little I have purchased off of the market to-date. That isn't negatively directed at the studio, as they continue to put out very cool stuff. I just find myself asking, "Do I need it?" every Tuesday. And most often, the answer is no.

That said, I am a sucker for sales. I bought Beam Rifle while it was on sale (though, I wanted it to begin with), and I bought the Barbarian set a couple weeks ago when it went on sale. If there is a way to get me to buy something I am on the fence about "needing," it is to put it on sale.

So if the Circle of Thorns set, Steampunk set, and Street Justice were to go on sale, my stockpile of points would disappear rapidly. Just saying...
  4. Every character I have has a concept, and I find it very hard to pick a favorite. I have a lot of characters inspired by existing characters like Iceman, Captain America, (an apprentice to) Manticore, Green Lantern, Ironman, and a future reformed version of Maelstrom. At least one of their costumes and certain parts of a few stories are reminiscent of their inspiration, and since most players of this game are familiar with those, I'll choose one of my characters that is completely my own brain-child.

    Name: Talsor Vox
    Origin: Science
    Archetype: Defender
    Primary: Sonic Resonance
    Secondary: Sonic Attack
Ancillary: Psychic Mastery (Taken only for Mind over Body)

His full origin story, as well as that of The Talsorian Guard SG, can be found at the link in my signature. OR search "Grey Ambition" on these forums for the same story (it's only 3 parts).

A brief summary: Nathan Winters, once just a loyal Vanguard soldier, was chosen by Lady Grey and given the chance to undergo an experimental procedure that, if successful, would result in super-powered defense force loyal only to Vanguard and their goals. He took the opportunity, and became the leader of the Talsorian Guard.

I'd explain more, but hey, I have to try to get people to read somehow!

-Sells you out, making you the fall guy
-Laughs in your face and tells you you've just been doing his errands
-Sits back down and says "and now we wait"

It's not satisfying at all. Heroside, players get the satisfaction of stopping the bad guys and saving the day. Villainside, players get to be lackeys for bigger villains and, afterward, are politely told to go home and wait for the next opportunity.

If we DO get that next opportunity, it's the contact going "ZOMG THERE'S SOMETHING HUGE AND EVIL, MORE EVIL THAN YOU AND I, YOU NEED TO GO TEAM UP WITH THE HEROES OR THE WHOLE UNIVERSE IS GOING TO DIIIIIIE" and we get directed to the nearest co-op zone.
With absolute sincerity, lacking any sarcasm or sardonism: What would you have as a suitable "villainous victory" that could conceivably happen in a MMORPG (i.e. an on-going character-driven universe based on a positive linear progression)?

He's editing the reply titles. Originally, the thread title cited the interview on MMORPG.com, but it is on Massively.com. When you hit reply, the default title just copies the thread title unless you customize it. Beastyle changed the thread title, then had to go through and change everyone's post titles as well to display the correct information.

...And then what? Game over. Literally, there's nothing left to do because everything is destroyed.

When evil prevails, society and its constant flow ceases. There is no more forward motion, because you can only enslave, conquer, and destroy so much before there is nothing left!

I cannot stress enough that I agree with you. Villains get the shaft WAY too often. I am glad there are at least things like the LRSF where you can demolish the do-gooders. But in order for the game to progress, evil cannot win in the CoH-universe-wide event because it would result in a negative progression rate, eventually ending at nothing.
  8. That's awesome! Except, it presents 2 sides of a coin. Having one of your characters inducted into the Freedom Phalanx would be considered a very high honor (at least by most players). In order to get inducted, the character obviously has to be well-thought out in all categories (costume, history/power origin, etc.). But in being inducted, you are now resigning all of that. That character will no longer be "yours." (Yes, I know technically none of our characters are "ours" but I'm talking in terms of playability, ability to affect the character's story, etc.)

I don't know if I could do that. Usually, by the time I've put that much thought and effort into designing a character, I want to keep him!

[EDIT] Guess I should have refreshed, Archivist beat me to it.
  9. Rrrrrrockin' raid last night Pinnacle! A full league, with all the lower frame rates that come with it! No complaints here though, it was a very smooth run. I especially liked the 4 or so Vanguard HVASs that were rampaging around the center bowl. Well done all! See you next week.

    OP is updated.

Of course every team needs damage, but every AT has it. If you have a team of 8 different AT's you have a team with 8 characters that do damage.

It is incredibly rare that anyone asks for or even considers that they need more damage on a team. It is just there.
If I have a team of a Tanker, Defender, Mastermind, and Controller, especially in the 1-50 game to which you are referring, you better believe I'm looking for a Blaster, Scrapper, or at least a Corruptor or Dominator. Yes, "everyone does damage" but a Blaster or Scrapper will put out impressive damage numbers from level 1 onward. Other archetypes hit their damaging prime time much later in their careers.

Careful with the generalizations, that is where you're getting flak-attacked. By saying "no one every says..." you sound as though you are speaking for the entire population, which you simply cannot do. Perhaps it is your experience that you do not see people celebrating the entrance of a damage dealer onto a team, or perhaps you yourself do not necessarily celebrate it, but to make an absolute claim based on your personal experience is presumptuous and insulting.

Instead, try presenting the text of the OP as your personal opinions, and then ask how people view different ATs, or ask what you may be missing. Players are happy to point out the "in's and out's" of their favorite archetype, and it may give you a fresh perspective on what is "useful or desirable."
  11. Nice man! Probably the smartest way I can think to do something like this.

Just holler in the channels, I'm sure we'll be happy to help you with this stuff. I'm almost ALWAYS have a toon that needs to hunt Nemesis for Unveiler, or run a Moonfire for Slayer and Silver Bullet, etc. We'll get ya there. Again.

Definitely! I am glad there is no cutoff. I can plan to attend now, but make a concrete decision later in the year.
  13. What side do you pick more than others? Heroes

What play style do you prefer? Honestly: depends on my mood.

What power set(s) do you favor? I rarely repeat power sets on different characters. I generally play ranged characters, though.

What zones do you like the most? RWZ, Talos Island, and Steel Canyon.

Do you usually play as a male or female (word of hatred) ''toon''? Exclusively male. I love women, and I find the vast array of strong, smart, and/or sexy female toons in this game to be fantastic. But playing as them led to people referring to me, the player, as "her" and that was unsettling, haha.

Views on Role Playing? I will talk in character while on a team about my immediate circumstances (mission objective or accomplishments, team members, etc.) but I do not invent a whole livelihood for my characters outside of what I'm doing.

    Servers? Pinnacle
  14. Those were quite funny. Good delivery too, Arcana. Started my work day off with a laugh, which is always good.

    i22 Beta

Hmm, must have been something screwy, because I had absolutely no problems with it this evening. Okay then!

Well, glad to know more of us are beta testing out there!
  16. THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS

I agree. I had to chase the guy through 3 maps just to finally watch him die...

Speaking of his death: Statesman has been around for the better part of a century. In all that time he must have read many books and been privy to plenty of television and film media. Do you mean to tell me that he never learned that when the hero pursues the villain to a significant-looking location and steps into the center of said location, that a trap is usually sprung!? Honestly, I'm watching the cut scene (which, again, I liked) and I'm watching him step across that middle circle thinking all the while, "Aaaaaaand queue magical trap!"

Ahem... so that was a bit frustrating. Ironically, I disliked this part of the arc the most of all of them, mainly because there was no "To Be Continued scene" at the end. All of the others left us with an idea of where we were heading next, but now, I'm left saying, "Sooo, now what?"

I very much wish there had been some memorial stills of the Freedom Phalanx, or some other sort of reaction denoument to the third mission. For the death of such a significant character, it felt somewhat inconclusive, in an unsettling sort of way (as opposed to a left-me-wanting-to-find-out-more way).
  17. The good: I live in the Chicago area and could TOTALLY make this (as opposed to something that was taking place on either coast).

The bad: there is no way I can RSVP positively or negatively this far in advance :/
  18. All worthwhile thoughts. Glad to read that I am not in the dark on anything. I do hope they'll take a look at these. A base accuracy of 1.00, a longer duration, an increase in magnitude, or any combination of the above would make these powers at least viable. But as they are, yikes.
  19. This question has been burning in my mind for some time: Does anyone know why moves like Dark Pit, Pulsar, Heart of Darkness, etc., come with a base accuracy of only 0.80? Typically, moves like these are only mag 2, and since magnitude cannot be enhanced, you can only hope to stun minions and underlings with no other stacking effects. Plus, the base durations are generally on the short side, so it is hard for them to effectively be used as control. These moves are not worth taking for most characters, considering I do not see people using them that often and I have never found myself in a position to take one because there is usually a better or more useful move available. Am I missing something?

If not, I think moves like these warrant an reevaluation.
  20. The fact is that, despite a player having been absent for 4+ years, they could still return to the game, and if memory serves, any character that is above level 6 cannot be touched. There is still a chance, however slight, that a player may choose to return after that long of an absence. While I agree that the policy, after such a long time, should be "too bad, so sad, your character name was given to a player who has been paying for the past 4 years" apparently the staff do not want to have to deal with that headache, and I cannot say I blame them.

Also, I do not think the Devs have a script to sort out characters that have been inactive for "x" amount of time, and designing one could potentially have some undesired results, so the "standard code rant" probably also applies.

For what it is worth, I am right there with you. There are a couple names out there that I would love to grab and that aren't being used, but I cannot blame the Devs for playing it safe on this front.

But they don't seem more numerous now than in the past, to me.
That's because most of them probably had the epiphany that they, indeed, do not enjoy this game, and left for a galaxy far, far away.

Squid, I'd say you've been spending too much time on the forums. I had written a long paragraph about how reading up on the forums can lead to a perfectionists mentality, but long story short: get off the forums, into the game, and play with the people that play it for fun.
  22. /signed, but only if Blasters get a Radiation Manipulation secondary! Matching power set themes FTW!

I like the looks of it a lot and would love to see it in-game.

    i22 Beta

    Hey Mac Users,

Just a reminder to take an hour out of your usual play time in the near future to check out some of the beta stuff. As we all know, the game likes to give us bugs that may not be present for PC users, so it is best to check out that stuff now before it goes live and we are left with a slew of problems.

On that note: Has anyone been there and had issues? I attempted to log on last night and create a new Dark/Dark Dominator to give it a spin, but I could not get past costume creation (the power customization and biography screens were blacked out). In retrospect, I should have tried another power set combo to see if it was just the new sets, but I didn't think of that at the time. I want to see if anyone is having this problem, or if it is just me, before I post anything about it in beta feedback.

Yes, I'd like to see these, if only for a slight bit of realism to the tights. But overall, I very much like that style and think it is essential to the game and genre.

I agree with Sam, I don't think it is necessary, and if the crinkles/folds end up in locations where people find them distracting, then you are left with disappointment. I vote no here.

Some say that the Defense and Olympian Guard base textures cover this style fairly well. Do you agree?
I definitely would like to see more sets like this, but again I have to agree with Sam. The Defense set's uneven style (particularly the pants) can clash with a lot of patterning. While I think there should definitely be dimension to these sets, I think the overall costume should look uniform, as opposed to the Defense Set where it looks as though there is a mesh under-layer and then padding over certain areas (shoulders and chest on top, inner thighs on the bottom).

As for masks, I'll keep it simple. It should look like something form fitting has been pulled over the head, rather than a bald head painted to look like the mask. Few-to-no seams, but no visible ears either.
  25. Great raid last night! We had nearly a full league, and I saw a number of players whom I've never met before. Lots of fun, and I am glad people enjoy consistently coming out to these, it makes it all the more enjoyable for me. Hope to see you all again this coming week!

    OP has been updated.
