Hibernate is nice, but I'd rather have the attacks. That's why I went Ice, to get 3 attacks. So it came down to Hover vs Hibernate. Conceptually, the character has to hover.
But yes, Hibernate is a great power. I used to use it but found I can be pretty aggressive and not need it.

The black screen of death (for the COH client) didn't go away with the 5/12 patch.
Can anyone tell a mac newbie (me) how to make a link to a specific directory and put it on my desktop?
It is tiring to do command-f, then select my user, then dig into Library, Preferences, City of Heroes Preferences, p_drive, User, Local Settings, Application data. I mean all I wanna do is delete the NCSoft folder.
Hey isn't Leopard build on FreeBSD? I need to remember how to make a shell script that blows the NCSoft folder away. That'd rule.Heck I could even have the script kick off my COH application when its done.
Hmm.
But in the meantime, just knowing how to make a desktop link to a specific folder ... that'd be awesome.
Help?

Quote:That has been working for me, but man its tedious to hit command-f and then click my user and then navigate all the way down. Is there a way to make a desktop link or a toolbar link that opens right to a specific directory? But in the meantime try this as a workaround. Instead of deleting the whole Preference folder, only delete:
"/Library/Preferences/City of Heroes Preferences/p_drive/User/Local Settings/Application Data/NCSoft"
I ask because the 5/12 patch didn't fix my black screen of death on the mac client.

Quote:I see this also, and I have the same setup.I'd rather that than what it does to me: Mark's EVERYTHING read when I log in...about 30% of the time. Nothing more fun than coming in on a Monday morning and seeing "No New Posts" since I left Friday night, despite seeing right there on the front page post dates of that day.
I'm assured by our crack web team that this is caused by the highly unusual browser set up I use -- Firefox with NoScript and AdBlockPlus.

Plant/Fire is more flexible, and it is also amazing a LOT sooner than Fire/Psi.
Fire/Psi, despite the buffs to its earlier attacks, still isn't quite "complete" until level 40. That's a long time to wait.
Plant/Fire on the other hand is complete around level 8-12. By then, you can throw seeds of confusion on a pack, let them clump up for a second, and then set all the fools on fire with your meaty Fire Breath. Hard to beat for pure satisfaction, and you don't have to wait.
(I have Fire/Psi at 50 and Plant/Fire at 43, btw, so I can assure you that either choice will be a delight ... eventually. Plant/Fire is just easier to get into.)
EDIT: whoops, I didn't realize the OP had already decided. You made the righrt choice.

Here is a build I threw together, just to show how careful selection of IOs lets you get good numbers for your powers in less slots. It is also an example of a build that uses set bonuses to increase a desirable trait (global recharge). Hopefully this gives you some more ideas.

I see that, as you mentioned, you skipped Stone Cages. That's fine I suppose, but then you went and took Stone Prison. I guess if you just on occasion want to stop one guy like an AV, stone prison is more efficient. Still, I think its worth picking up Stone Cages instead of Stone Prison. Because sometimes, even if its situational, its nice to root ALL the enemies (use with caution
).
I also see some issues.
1) Generally I notice that you are arbitrarily slapping in sets without any special reason. As a result, you are getting mediocre to poor numbers in your powers and/or you are spending money for no particular reason. Sometimes its just that you'll slot a full set of 6 when you would have done better with 5 of the set and then some other IO from a different set in the 6th slot (often the 6th set bonus isn't worth it). Powers particularly affected by this in your build include: Fire Breath, Stalagmites, Volcanic Gasses, Animate Stone, and Shark Skin. Maybe Summon Coralax, too.
2) Fiery Embrace should have 95% or so recharge (3 recharge IOs or the equivalent). It is a huge damage buff and you want it up as often as possible. You also took it a bit later than I would have, but still, not too late.
3) You skipped some good powers. Specifically, you skipped Blaze. That one hits like a ton of bricks. I would definitely take Blaze. Also, you skipped Incinerate and Combustion. There are reasons to skip them, but you should at least consider them. I prefer to avoid Incinerate myself due to the fact that I can make a nice single target chain without it, but many people take it. It is also a heavy hitter and worth taking. Some people skip Combustion due to the slowness of the animation, but I like it because it is more Area Of Effect damage, and I can't get enough.
Maybe these comments will give you some ideas. Good luck!

I know I keep stepping over Local Man a bit, in that he asked the OP for his sample build so we could tweak it, and yet I'm just about to post a build without having any of that knowledge. Sorry again, Local Man.
My build is situated for both a ranged and a melee role. Unlike Local Man, I don't care much about soloing prior to level 33. I teamed pre-33, and largely teamed from 33 on. I accept that at low levels, I'll mainly be teaming up. I didn't specialize like he did.
My build is designed for all 3 of the most common Ice/Storm roles: Ranged, Melee, and Avenger.
I can leave Arctic Air off, hang back, and use everything at range. I can get in close with melee friends and let Arctic Air do the talking. Or I can play my preferred role of Avenger, in which I use Hurricane to herd/tank/gather/trap/destroy. In that mode, I'm a full-on damage dealer with Hurricane for safety, Frostbite, Tornado, Lightning Storm, Jack Frost, Ice Blast, Frost Breath and Ice Storm for damage.
That's why I kinda like this build ... it does it ALL except for solo prior to level 32. At lower levels, I could use the alternate build feature in COH for a damage-centric / melee mitigation setup (somewhat like Local Man's approach, I suppose) but I haven't felt a strong enough need to do it yet.
Anyway, here is the build. I hope it gives you some ideas!

I'll post my build that I run on live currently, even though it is late and I don't have time to talk about it right now (much). It is 3 seconds short of perma-Hasten and 6 or 7 seconds short of perma-PA. I could definitely sneak some recharge into Blind if I really wanted to get perma-Hasten, but it didn't really matter to me. It was close enough for me.
The good thing about the build, IMO, is that you could ignore the sets I took, and just follow it using SOs or generic IOs. Pick the powers and the slots in the order listed and you could just play up to level 50 with no respec needed. Basically, I try to make my endgame build such that the power order is playable, as well as the order in which I select slots.
So, it may give you some ideas. It may not.

For me the answer has been Ice and Illusion.
I've taken Earth/FF, Fire/FF and Ice/FF to level 50. I've taken Illusion/FF to 39. I've teamed with a friend who has taken Illusion/FF to level 48 or so.
Anyway, Illusion/FF is a great combo, simply because Illusion is awesome and mez protection is awesome and the sets look like they belong together, especially if you take the primal epic as my friend did.
Ice/FF is really nice because you will have mez protection for Arctic Air, and you can soft cap yourself to ranged, AOE, and smashing/lethal. I love being able to tank and keep guys hosed up due to Arctic Air.

I'm frustrated too. It is irritating to have to delete files and restart my PC every time. Before I17, my Mac Client was perfect.

Hmm. I just hate giving up all the other power picks for Stamina. I love Stamina, but for the Posi TF I think I want all my other functionality.
Here is what I think I'll morph into once I get my City Traveller badge, or whatever its called. Basically, I'm going to move the Purple Hold set into Fossilize (I have the Hold/End crafted in my base so I can swap it for the chance for damage). I will move my Basilisk Gaze into Volcanic Gasses. I will then go ahead and earn some cash to acquire the Absolute Amazement set for Stalagmites.
If I'm not mistaken, I keep my purple set bonuses even when exemplared down. Is that correct? If so, I'd have 12% recovery, but I think between that and AM, it would suffice. Otherwise, I'll move Enervating Field back and lose it, but nothing else has to be lost.
Also, if I go with this build, I could save a slot on Combat Jumping, as long as I have the level 10 BOTZ. Or I could keep it and have -KB from both sources.
I'll post the build I'm thinking about, below.
Thanks, and I'm still open to any other comments.

Heh.
Well it'd only be for Posi that I don't have Stamina. And maybe a level 20 TF. Is there one? I forget. But for everything else, I'd be golden. I was hoping that between AM, my one purple set bonus, and some restraint, the versatility would be superior.
MentalMaden, what would you suggest instead?
Lewis -
Do you really feel that Full Invis (Super Speed + Sprint) and Stamina are more important than Quicksand, Enervating Field, Mutation and Lingering Radiation?
I can see Enervating Field. I was considering dropping that back myself and picking up Recall and SS in place of CJ and EF. But is it really worth dropping LR, Quicksand, and Mutation just for Stamina?
That seems a bit of a stretch. But I'm open to the idea if you've got a solid reason.
Lewis -
All,
I just used a respec on my level 50 Earth/Rad Controller. The goal was to make a build in which I have all my yummy earth/rad powers for the Positron Task Force. I'm missing recall friend and full stealth, and stamina wont be available to me, but I've got just about everything else. I haven't tried the build on the new Posi yet, but I hope that I will soon.
I'm also hoping you'll take a look at my build so that I can get your opinions on what is more valuable. The powers I have now through level 20? Full Stealth? Recall Friend? Stamina? I can't quite decide.
Also, I am thinking that in a couple of months when I get the veteran badge/perk on my account (with this character) that I may swap either Super Speed or Recall Friend with Combat jumping. I would put a level 10 universal BOTZ KB IO in either super speed or recall, so that I have knockback protection AND either recall or full stealth. So comments on how you'd tweak this (if I could take SS before Hasten) would be appreciated as well.
Thanks,
Lewis

I like controllers the most, due to the fact that I love fighting statues, or at least I like making as many foes helpless as possible. Sure, it can be a bit slow in terms of damage until you get into the 40s, and even then it is rarely better than "not slow" ... but hey. It is worth it.

I agreed with that post totally. However, I also feel that (as others have said) the mere existence of Going Rogue will probably trash a lot of builds too.
I wouldn't plan a top-end build until say ... this time next year. Well, unless you can afford to top-end build a character multiple times in one year.

You could also change the character's main power from Invisibility to Light Control. With that in mind, you could do a Rad/Energy Blaster. You could still make Invisibility be the main way he interacts with / opens up on bad guys.
Of course, Illusion/FF/Primal could also work for a "Light Control" character, or an Energy Mastery character, but then Invisibility becomes more of a side effect of what you can do. But hey, at least then there would be no reason to skip any powers, really.

Quote:I hope it is horizontal.Unicyle Peon, the devs have already said the Incarnate levels will be an alternate progression deal, it's not a pseudo-levelcap raise. Horizontal character development, not vertical.
The thing is, if there are new zones that require significant investnemt to enter / complete, either due to the need for the power you get from Incarnate levels OR from a programming/coding limit required, then it is effectively vertical. That is what I'm worried about. Now if I can still team my level 50 non-Incarnate with a level 50 + level 10 incarnate and still do all the same missions and task forces, and maybe be a bit weaker, that's fine, so long as its no worse than teaming a generic/SO only character with someone who is all IOed out.

Local Man,
Gravity/Storm is indeed a winner!
All,
Traps would rule for controllers. I also really want Poison. I don't really care about Pain at all. If they proliferated Traps and Poison, I would for sure make:
Gravity/Traps
Fire/Traps
Earth/Traps
Illusion/Traps
Earth/Poison
Fire/Poison
I would also have to seriously consider:
Plant/Traps
Ice/Traps
Plant/Poison
Good times!
Of course, I dread GR and I19 for the whole Incarnates crap. It almost makes me not want to play anymore, and definitely makes me hesitant to make any new characters. By giving 10 new levels, it kinda makes all my "finished" level 50 characters sorta obsolete. It will take too long to play them through the 10 levels, but I'll feel compelled to do so if you can't survive the new zones and such without doing the new levels. The last thing I wanted was for the 10 Incarnate levels to feel like actual levels. I hoped it'd feel more like EQ 1 Alternate Advancement. So now, i've got 49 characters that will all be obsoleted.
So it kinda makes me not want to make any new characters, even cool proliferated ones.
Or maybe I'll just decide to never do post 50 content. I dunno.

Castle also replied to someone's conjecture posting and said the guy was very close to the actual list, and that he was only off slightly. He wouldn't say which little bit was wrong. Marketing had the taser hovering over his head while he was typing, I suppose.

My favorite part is probably color-coded recipes. I haven't even touched the rest of the I17 features.
My least favorite part is that the Mac Client, for many players, goes straight to a black screen and you can't play without deleting a bunch of config files and rebooting your Mac every time. I hope they'll fix that soon.

St0n3y,
Its a minor issue but both web sites still have May 4 as the date, even tho they have the version (1.706) right.
