  1. Another thing to consider. Minor, but still something to think about.

The defeat badges. Consider something with AoE attacks. It will make the hunting go faster.

Sure, you can use Judgement, but that's got a pretty slow recharge.

    Again, this is minor.
  2. Fitz,
I hope you know that I think you're hilarious. Most of the time, though I might not agree with your message, I welcome the delivery.

On this case, I wouldn't sell Noyjitat short. I don't have any villains, rogues or vigilantes that can do this right now.

But, my main has finished all his blue side day jobs, so why not go vigilante? I can always go back to blue side.

I can't say that I'd love it, but I can't say I wouldn't, as it will all be new content for me.

Maybe instead of offering infamy, maybe offer up your time? (oops, maybe Noyjitat would prefer the infamy!)
    Have nice day!

    6 hours..

I'm sorry, I guess I got confused. My second account was created in May of 2010. When I chose the first character's name, it hadn't really dawned on me that Mackerel Man would be the assigned global name.

I had decided to change it to Velvet Elvis and did so. After numerous questions from others about a reference to something I had no idea about, I changed it to Ukase Rex II.

So, I know with that short term account, I have used 2 "tokens". And, the option to rename it again is still there. It just seemed to me that as many times as I've seen other renames taking place within my chat box, that there's always going to be another option.

Again, my apologies for inferring or assuming anything incorrect. I certainly didn't mean to cast Tax E in a bad light.
  4. Ukaserex

    6 hours..

You can always change it back to Tax E. So change it already. I know my second account has changed it's global name twice already, and it's only been around 15 months.
  5. No you're not. You left us, Rocky. You've gone into this vast Rift.
  6. If you find that checking the box "allow multiple instances" doesn't work, open a support ticket.

Also, try clicking start, run and typing in MSCONFIG.

Click the tab that says Services.

Check the box that says hide all microsoft services.

Of the boxes that remain, uncheck all of them.

    Then try again.

    Worked for me.

    Anyone else?

Sorry you're having problems getting on, especially on your day off. Trust me, I know exactly how annoying that can be.

But, alas, we're in emergency maintenance. Frietag returned one of my PMs and said that he couldn't elaborate on when the servers would be back on.

I'm pretty sure it will be fairly soon, as it's already been a couple of hours. Not sure exactly what's being done, and I couldn't hazard a guess, either.

    6 hours..

UPDATED 14:30 PDT: This maintenance is unfortunately still on-going. We currently have no further information regarding when the servers will become available again. Thank you once again for your patience and support.

I am amused. The way it reads, it almost sounds like they may never come online again.

    6 hours..

Hmm, guess now I can take a cat-nap.

    It's not the server.

I suggest posting in the Technical Issues forum along with your DxDiag and HijackThis report. Some possibile issues:

    - spyware
    - virusses
    - old graphics card drivers
    - low space on c:
    - need to defrag
    - pagefile undersized
    - not enough RAM

    so on and so forth.

But I can tell you with near 100% certainty it's not the server.
Sorry, Fitz. In this instance - I don't necessarily disagree with your conclusion, but I do disagree with your advice. Sure, the CoH player base has some exceptionally bright people and some of them are more than willing to help. However, shouldn't we all get the full value for our money? The game has tech support - use them!

    First - http://us.ncsoft.com/gameadvisor

This is going to make an attempt to run a little program that can take up to 20 minutes to finish. When it's done, it puts shortcut to a text file on the desktop. When it's done, you attach the text file to the CoH support ticket.
From there, the folks that fully understand exactly how things are supposed to work on the CoH side can get a better understanding of how to solve the problem.

In my case, they told me to click start, run and enter MSCONFIG

They told me to hide all of microsoft services. Then uncheck all the remaining things. There were about 7 or 8. 3 of them I had no idea what they did. At that point, I was then able to get on and resume as usual.

Absolutely nothing against the bright folks in our own CoH forums, but I've had occasions where I've gotten conflicting advice in the past.

Some rules of thumb - always check your video card drivers to ensure they are up to date. (might as well check your other drivers as well)

Check to see if Windows is trying to update something. That always seems to cause me lag.

Some of you are playing on quad and hex core systems with 4 gigs of ram or more. I suspect that for the most part, you guys aren't having any problems at all, except for the server side issues when the CoH system is trying to track the details for 50 toons and send all manner of data back to each persons system so the respective players can mash the appropriate buttons to beat up the bad guys. That problem, well, maybe they're fixing that now!

When all else fails, blame the ISP!

    6 hours..

So, maintenance is expected to last 6 hours.

That just seems like a really long time, guess I'll sleep late.

    Merges

I'm not sure the original poster was wanting Liberty to become Freedom.

I think there's a small population of Liberty that simply loves Liberty because of the people that make up Liberty. They're not going to move to another server, except maybe to try another toon that they don't have a spare slot for.

There's another set that possibly came from Freedom or another server with a dense population. They enjoy the friendly people - and the sacrificing overtures from total strangers who will help with an Elite Boss or the fact that you can ask a question on LB or SHF or LFA, and not only do you get an answer, noone follows it up with any insults.

(the word dense in the previous paragraph could have two distintively different meanings. Take your pick, they both apply.)

There's a larger chunk that plays an MMO specifically to TEAM up. They want to team. They need to team. They find playing solo boring. But, to date, they aren't familiar with LB, LFA or SHF or Christian Chat, or any of the zillion other channels that are available. The smarter ones find their way here and wonder where are all these personalities when they're playing.

Hyperstrike makes one very solid point. Team forming is far superior to LFT.
Most of us who post on the forums on regular basis form teams routinely. Many do not. They find some way to amuse themselves until they get recruited. This is largely why it takes some people so long to reach 50. They are not familiar with or are not comfortable with forming and leading teams.
I can't say why - only those people can.

In the meantime, if we see someone shouting "LFT" or something close to that, let's not be so shy and form a team.

wow. They fuss about that over there?

You gave an example. You gave a solution. You never stated the problem as you saw it and I'm not seeing it. Maybe I've been living in the shark tank too long; explain what you're trying to solve and I'll tell you if I think it's a problem, and if I think your solution will work.
I never stated a problem, correct. The OP asked a question - how would I balance the market.

I would balance the market by removing the history of all the transactions.
The rest was just commentary and illustration.

Personally, I don't have a real issue of any kind against the market as it works now, except that there are rare drops whose value on the market are less than some common drops. The same with some very rare drops, valuing less than rare drops. I didn't even get into that, because it's irrelevant to this thread.

In retrospect, one could argue that the market, by definition is in balance. Things are worth as much inf as people are willing to pay.

There are some things that are pricy, true. But, anything worth having is worth effort, no?

The real problem is worth and value are relative terms.
One man's meat is another man's poison, and all that.
  15. The solution, as I see it is simple.

Let's say a new set came out for one of the new 5th tier travel powers, like Afterburner.

Let's call this set Widgets. Widgets has 6 enhancements to choose from. Like the rest, you need at least two of them to see any type of bonus.

    Widgets A, B, C, D, E, F

Widgets F is, of course, a proc. Some folks love them, others not so much.

What's it worth? Well, it's worth as much as someone is willing to pay.
Because of the way the market is set up (Wentworths), you might only ask 100 influence and receive 100,000,000 influence for it.
The next person to sell approaches the market with some uncertainty. He's not sure it's worth 100,000,000. This next person may not have the up front fee needed to sell it for that much. Besides, he's not greedy. It was dropped on him battling a troll. There are thousands of trolls, surely he'll get another one some time soon. So, he sells for 50,000,001.

Well the next buyer sees only 1 for sale, and notices that the last sold for 100,000,000. What's he going to bid on it for? 100 inf? Sure. But, he doesn't get it. But, he leaves the bid, and bids again for 100,000 inf.
Still, no action. He re-bids for 1,000,000. No action.

He decides that there's nothing in the game worth over 1 million inf, leaves his bids and goes.
Some impatient guy, loaded with inf places a bid for 100 million and gets his new widgets enhancement.

So now, the history shows two people thought this thing was worth 100million.

BUT IS IT REALLY WORTH THAT MUCH?

The answer is yes - only to two people - so far.

So, what is my simple solution? Take away the history. Nobody will know how much anything is worth until their bid buys it.

The best part is nobody will know how much their item is worth when they sell it until someone buys it.

We might all "know" or remember that LGTF 7.5% go for 150 to 200 mill.

But, what if we didn't? How much would we sell it for? Would we sell it at all?

And this newer Issue 21 tier 5 speed power - that when used recharges all of your powers instantly - will they be worth less? or even more - because people will want this power- - who wouldn't want to use hasten, then this power, and then stack hasten right away? All they'd need would be 60% global recharge to have that 200% and the first would recharge before the second expired. Granted, this wouldn't be perma, but it would be very handy.
    But, I'm digressing.

Take away the history of the transactions. Then, the folks that don't mind putting a bid in for a zillion inf can do so. The thrifty will do so. The greedy player will be out his placement fee. The reasonable player will make a sale.

Just my opinion, folks, I could be wrong.
  16. Try as I might, I can't keep myself from posting.

I'd like to encourage everyone to only point out errors that are just so brazen, to not do so would be an injustice to some unsuspecting new player who happens to come along.

I was once a "noob". In many ways, I still am. I left the game for a long time, and have come back. The folks that write these guides, for whatever reasons they may have, are doing a fine job of educating new players and returning players.

Myself, through some old school knowledge I had before, and some tips within the forums, I've turned a paltry 23 million (combined from 10 level 50s that I already had) into several billions.

I would like to do one of these - but I can't discount my knowledge of the game. I can choose to not claim specific vet powers. (and certainly, at lower levels the Sands of Mu and Nemesis Staff are very nice to have!)

Yet, only my experience is going to tell me that the tutorial is going to give me two 3rd tier inspirations that I can sell for enough to put some bids on underpriced recipes.

I applaud the efforts of the OP, and others who post their guides, and those who constructively correct the rest of us.

Have fun with your experiment. Fire/Kins are fun! At least my level 22 is so far.

    Ups ?

Thanks very much guys for some useful information.

Some of you should consider teaching.

    Have a nice day!
  18. My ugly, poorly designed and slotted by me, Cantankerous has yet to get his alpha slot or at least, has yet to finish the arc.

So, I can assure you, that returning from the game or not - there are still plenty of people with alts that haven't done this yet.

I have a grav/kin that I don't enjoy soloing with that may also need it. In any event, /chanjoin lb or lfa or Sisterhoodfriends and you're bound to find someone to help out.

As PW pointed out, there may be some melodramatic foolishness from time to time - but even the guys that talk smack to each other treat other people pretty well. Most have gone out of their way to help me, I can't think of a reason why myself or someone else wouldn't help you.

I highly recommend reading through the forums, soaking in some of the newer stuff. I learn something new every day. And, trust me, there was a time when I thought I knew everything! :P
  19. Ukaserex

    Ups ?

Well, I was doing a respec, and on the last wave, the power went out. When it came back on, my computer wouldn't turn on.

I figured that if there's no power, it was likely the power supply. So, I took out the power supply, a 650 watt LSP Ultra, which had a pretty good rating and reviews at Tiger Direct. Then I installed my older 430 watt. I figured I better take out my GTX 460 video card because I wasn't certain it could hang with the lower amps of the older power supply.

Here's the thing - Aside from the monitor, odds are, if lightning strikes again, I could piece together a newer system for less than 500 bucks that's likely better than the one I have now. (or had before the lightning.) As it stands, there's nothing wrong with anything in the system except the 650 W power supply.

My question is, though - I had a surge protector. Aren't they supposed to protect against things like this? If not, then what does?

During the MSR earlier this evening, the leader mention being grateful for a UPS. Would one of those help? (Uninteruptible Power Supply - not to be confused with the power supply that goes into the tower)

I already have a new MB, CPU, power supply and memory in my shopping cart, but I don't want to fork over hundreds of dollars when the next storm might take my system out again.

Oh -- really interesting -- now that I have the older 7300LE card in, I don't notice ANY difference at all.
  20. Thanks! Given the info, I guess I'll stick with my tank. Far safer to chew reds than to have to chew purples and oranges.
  21. My gaming has made a progression from playing an electric blaster so completely lacking in how to slot, I was slotting for ED before it was ever heard of. The lack of success with that toon led me to play an empath/electric defender, assuming that the heals would allow me to survive what the blaster could not.

While this was an error filled assumption, teaming got me through the rough spots, and teammates would wonder why I would not have fort, or clear mind at level 30. Because they didnt' help me kill anything. And so, the education began...

I was more than happy to roll an ice blaster, and that led me to a fire blaster, whose secondary led him into melee...alot. It was a lot of fun in melee. Especially Fire Sword Circle. But, even with a purple inspiration, that sometimes was not enough to survive in melee. It was fun, but there's something about a fire tank, executing the same maneuvers (admittedly with less damage) but surviving it.

I love my fire tank. She needs a respec, and there are several things I've learned to make her better.

And so, in my global channels, I see a conversation about brutes and a 675% damage cap.....how damage % goes up as the fighting continues.

I hear that the fire/fire tank is no longer the speediest, most survivable killing machine. (if it ever truly was -opinions will vary) I hear super strength/Fiery Aura Brutes are now the flavor of the month, so to speak.

In another thread, not wanting to thread jack, someone chimed in that you can chase recharge or defense - not both.

Surely there is a balance - but is the balance the best way?

So much depends on play style- - farming or teaming - or both.

So, I rolled a fire/fire brute. I'm familiar with the powers, so I figured I could adjust to the differences between brute and tank.

Not getting burn until level 28, though - that hurt my feelings.
I am familiar with Mids. Though I tend not to use it to plan an entire build, but just to compare IO sets, not the bonuses.

Is it true that a brute with high recharge will by default have lower defense?
I had rolled a kin/shield brute, and he sits at level 40 in dire need of a respec, but he'll wait until I more fully understand this battle between recharge speeds and defense.

I have had toons that were high in defense before. Some mobs I could jump in the middle of and have a snack and they'd barely been scratched when I resumed paying attention. Others, even with the same defense, I'd get debuffed and just clobbered - in seconds. Longbows were really good at that.

I think that to play a brute well, it would require some ability to survive long enough to get fury as high as I can so that I can clobber things faster - before they clobber me.

So - my questions before this expert panel - (aimed specifically for a fire/fire brute)

    1. In my mind, recharge = damage. Is defense a better thing to build for? Let fury do what it's designed to do and build for defense?
    2. Are brawl, punch and kick commonly used to build up fury? They have quick recharge off the top, use little end and help to build the fury bar..
    3. When in the life of the brute do you fit taunt in the build? I was level 25 on a moonfire taskforce, and kept looking on my power tray for taunt, and I hadn't picked it for some reason. Other powers seemed more critical. (tough, weave, fire sword circle...)
    4. If I'm going to play a brute - I should not play it like a tank, unless there is no tank on the team....right? The game has definitely changed. Only very rare occasions make a tank necessary for success. A tank just covers up a teams weak spots, in a way. Does a brute just play like a scrapper?
I'm very comfortable with the hero ATs. I knew what to expect of each, and what was expected of me. But with the villain ATs, I'm not that familiar. It seems as if there are no hard fast rules of thumb. For those of you that team with your brutes with tanks on the team - what role do you take? Just run in next to the tank and start scrapping? or make your own little pile of baddies to wipe out? Is it really as simple as just doing what I feel like doing?

Yeah, blasters can be long winded. Particularly this one. I appreciate your time.
  22. Congratulations! You've come to the right place.

You probably already know the tfs required for tfc. That being said, I get this on all my toons. Three just came over from Praetoria and have none of the tfs required.

I can't say that our play times will coincide, but rest assured you're not the only one who wants and needs these task forces.

My in-game global is slightly different: @Ukase Rex

Should we end up running on the same team, be prepared for really stale jokes.
  23. I know one of the main reasons that my end runs down, is I leave sprint on - and am too cheap with my slots to let it have an end reducer in it.
  24. Ukaserex

    Hami Raid

Well, if someone decides to lead this, give the playerbase at least a couple of days to do the tip missions to switch sides.

Ah, nevermind. If we're gonna switch, we might as well just do it on blue side.
  25. Ukaserex

    Hami Raid

May I assume that the strategies used on blue side would be just as effective on red side? or does the Hami on red side have different characteristics?
