Returning Player- 50+1? Incarnate? Alpha Slot? Something?
Three ways you can unlock the alpha slot.
1. You will need to go to Ouroboros and complete Mender Ramiel's arc
2. Earn incarnate xp by running the Incarnate trials (Lambda, BAF, or Keyes)
3. You can buy the alpha slot by using threads and influence.
/chanjoin LB to find people running the itrials. You can also ask in there for someone to lay down an O portal for you if you do not already have one for number 1.
/gignore @username is the best feature of this game. It's also probably the least used feature.

If you have trouble soloing, you may need help with a couple of the missions in Ramiel's arc where you fight elite bosses. Ask friends to help, or global chat channels. LB is good for this; there is some nonsense there, but also a lot of helpful people too.

My ugly, poorly designed and slotted by me, Cantankerous has yet to get his alpha slot or at least, has yet to finish the arc.
So, I can assure you, that returning from the game or not - there are still plenty of people with alts that haven't done this yet.
I have a grav/kin that I don't enjoy soloing with that may also need it. In any event, /chanjoin lb or lfa or Sisterhoodfriends and you're bound to find someone to help out.
As PW pointed out, there may be some melodramatic foolishness from time to time - but even the guys that talk smack to each other treat other people pretty well. Most have gone out of their way to help me, I can't think of a reason why myself or someone else wouldn't help you.
I highly recommend reading through the forums, soaking in some of the newer stuff. I learn something new every day. And, trust me, there was a time when I thought I knew everything! :P

I started playing this game about a month after it's release.
Then I had to drop from playing for a while because chemotherapy costs a lot of money, and takes a lot of time. But now I'm gainfully employed, and I can afford to play the game again. Yay! So, I'm back.
I did get at least one character to 50 (difficult for me, because the game starts to grind away at me after 32).
So...
Apparently there's end-game content now, so I can pull out the single Level 50 I have and play around with it, right?
It seems to be called 'Alpha Slot' or something similar? I know I have access to it, because I bought Going Rogue and I have the one badge that they want me to have. But I have no idea how the heck to actually do this.
My character is a Controller (Mind/Kin) who seems to have lost her ability to easily solo after 32.
Assuming I have the patience can I solo through whatever the missions are necessary to give myself an Alpha Slot? Otherwise, are there teams still being created, or is everyone out there already slotted, and I'm kind of screwed?
The game ends at 50.
Do not ever give Mind Control a pet.
My characters are not "toons".
